4.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Delivers, August 27, 2006
This review is from: Legacy of Fire and Wind: Book I: Fires Within (Paperback)
A terrible war and the Nine Doom Prophecies are coming to the mystical world of Hahn-Hah and only Feslen Raster, a teenager condemned for his rare blood disorder, holds the key to its salvation.

With an eclectic band of friends that include his loyal brother (Duxan), a brave prince (Ka-Wei), a cunning thief (Lioin) and a wise Martial Arts Master (Master Chai), Feslen must conquer unthinkable magical obstacles.

Pei Kang is able to weave an intricate tale of hope, redemption and spirituality. One of the book's greatest strengths is Kang's almost effortless ability to intermingle both Eastern and Western cultures to create a world of tradition and chaos, love and loss.

The reader will cheer for not only Feslen, but each character lovingly crafted though each page of the story.

Though the book suffers from a lack of editing, this weakness is overcome by the passion brought forth by the author.

There are many books that boast unique characters and plots, but this is a book that truly delivers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A crippled boy magician struggles to save his nation, September 11, 2006
This review is from: Legacy of Fire and Wind: Book I: Fires Within (Paperback)
Legacy of Fire and Wind tells the story of the struggles of Feslen, a fourteen year old boy, to save the his nation of Chiendong (it looks a lot like China on the map) from the Nine Doom Prophecies.

Feslen is derided as a cripple because of his congenital disabilities, but he is a student of Master Chai, the premier martial artist and Arch Mage (magician) in all of the Chiendong. Master Chai is mysteriously poisoned, and his daughter Mei Xue, childhood friend of Feslen is kidnapped. Feslen and his brother, Duxan, travel on an odyssey braving fearsome dangers and powerful evil adversaries to try to rescue Mei Xue from the evil magician Elhong Wien, and dissolve the Nine Dooms.

But, there is another odyssey that is more profound than the first. It is the story of struggle both with everyday disrespect from "normal" people, and with acute tragedy and despond from the loss of someone most dear and loved. It is a story of courage and strength beyond one's physical resources.

"Legacy" is suspenseful and intriguing on its own merit, but it is further compelling because Feslen takes much of his own strength of character from Pei Kang, the author, who struggles daily with pseudotruncas arterosis, a rare type of congenital heart disease. Children with this kind of defect generally do not live beyond two years of age.

You will be glad, as I was, if you buy "Legacy of Fire and wind", and go on a magical odyssey with Feslan as he confronts awesome challenges to body and soul.
