I didn't realize it at the time, but this recording is a compilation, with Mulligan on baritone sax using many of the musicians that he did on "Birth of the Cool.." This is certainly the case with "Jeru" with Mulligan and Miles really cookin'. On thest o these tunes he mainly uses Chet Baker. There are ten of them including Lee Konitz on alto & Kai Winding on the bone. What also impresses me is the sound quality on these 1949 recordings....simply wonderful!

Many of the tunes are favorites to this day in jazz circles, and were written by Mulligan himself. For example, on cut 5 it's a sextet with Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone,, Zoot Sims on tenor & Mulligan also arranged this one (1956). These recordings were done in 1956. Mulligan never ever used piano in his recordings, so his sound was unique; check out cut 5 "Boplicity" also a Birth of the Cool effort, and taken directly from the "Birth of the Cool" album. We normally associate "Cool" with Miles Davis; it was mostly Mulligan who inspired this album.

Well, I won't bore you with anymore details; you're either a bebop fan or you're not.
