Review

The stories captured in Legacy of Honor hold valuable lessons for our country as we face new challenges at home and abroad. These Eagle Scouts will inspire readers to become leaders in serving others. (President Jimmy Carter)

Whether you choose to become a teacher, a police officer, a doctor, or even the mayor of the greatest city in the world, your experiences as an Eagle Scout will prove invaluable. Alvin Townley's Legacy of Honor does justice to the proud history and bright future of the Eagle Scouts. (Mayor Michael Bloomberg)

Alvin Townley's book describes how the Eagle Scout program can shape a life. He demonstrates this by providing examples of many former Eagles who have succeeded in life in no small part because of their experience in scouting. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. (Senator Bill Bradley)

In Legacy of Honor, we not only learn who many of these Eagle Scouts were, but the kind of leaders they have become and the enormous contributions they have made to their country and the world. In compiling these life stories, Alvin Townley has completed a picture of an extraordinary program and how its training has helped shape equally extraordinary lives. (Hon. Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator)

Alvin Townley's book reveals the legacy of the Boy Scouts. He relates the adventures and deeds of Eagle Scouts living by the Scout Oath … while contributing to the success of America. An excellent story that will inspire all of us. (Captain James A. Lovell, commander of Apollo 13)

The unique leadership role in America over the past century of men who earned their Eagle Scout award as boys is unparalleled in business, the professions, politics, the military and national security. Legacy of Honor explores this extraordinary phenomenon of Eagles' leadership through individual stories, both informative and inspirational. (Robert M. Gates, former CIA director and National Eagle Scout Association president)

Legacy of Honor will have a positive impact on the lives of millions of boys and their families. … If everyone in our country lives the principles of Scouting, the best years in our country's history will be in the future. (Ross Perot)

Scouting and conservation share respect for the natural world, so it always seemed natural to me that many of our staff and volunteer leaders would be Eagle Scouts--this book provides wonderful insights into all that Scouting offers and how it helps develop tomorrow's leaders. (Steve McCormick, President and CEO, The Nature Conservancy)

Commitment and devotion to the bedrock principles of our country -- optimism, fairness, determination and preparedness - are inseparably intertwined with Scouting. Alvin Townley does a superb job of portraying how Eagle Scouting helps shape these everyday yet incredibly powerful values that serve our families and society so well. (J.W. Marriott, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International)

Book Description

Each year roughly 50,000 young men join the ranks of one America's most honored groups: the Eagle Scouts.
Alvin Townley set off across the nation to hear the stories of Eagles from all walks of life, including civil rights leaders, soldiers, politicans, businessmen, and conservationists who began their life's journey in Scouting and went on to play a key role in American history. Townley shows how the experiences of youth have guided the paths these Eagles followed as adults and defined the common virtues that have shaped our nation.
The only book of its kind, Legacy of Honor is a celebration of the remarkable men that have established a universally renowned image and created a lasting legacy that Scouts past and present can look to for inspiration.

More About the Author

Alvin Townley has spent six years traveling throughout the country and around the world, capturing stories of leadership, service, and inspiration. He has met with extraordinary individuals from all walks of life who are serving their country, pursuing adventures with a higher purpose, and making a difference in our world.

His pursuit of these stories has taken him to the infamous Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam with a former POW, into South Sudan and Africa with Peace Corps volunteers, to America's inner cities with Teach for America corps members, to surfing and diving adventures in Australia, and to aircraft carriers in three different oceans, including the Arabian Sea combat zone.

Alvin has discussed life and leadership with leaders like Michael Bloomberg, Ross Perot, Cabinet Secretaries Robert Gates and Hank Paulson, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, J.W. Marriott, Jr., Bill Gates, Sr., and Jim Lovell of Apollo 13. He has also spent time with Navy SEALs, Olympic athletes, emerging entrepreneurs, missionaries, values-driven professional athletes, and others who share his passion for service and adventure.

Alvin Townley's writing brings alive moving personal stories that inspire America.

Defiant (2014) reveals the story of the eleven POWs who endured Vietnam's most infamous prison, the women who fought for them, and the one who never returned. Best-selling author Stephen Coonts noted, "Alvin Townley's story of the courage, valor, and honor of eleven indomitable POWs and their wives is a new American classic that will be read as long as breezes kiss Old Glory. As I read it I wept."

Fly Navy (2011) explores the values and people - officers and enlisted, past and present - behind the century-old enterprise of naval aviation. Vice Admiral Tom Kilcline, Commander, Naval Air Forces 2007-2010, commented, "FLY NAVY crystalizes the imagination of flight into true inspiration."

Spirit of Adventure (2009) introduces America to a new generation of leaders - young Eagle Scouts who are leading lives of purpose and adventure. NFL MVP Peyton Manning commented, "Alvin Townley showcases the spirit of our young generation...Spirit of Adventure tells a compelling story about America's future."

Legacy of Honor (2007), his first book, explores how Scouting has influenced American life. President Jimmy Carter commented, "These Eagle Scouts will inspire readers to become leaders in serving others." Defense Secretary Robert Gates called the book "inspirational."

After reading Mr.Townley's book, I have come to realize that one of the few organizations in our society teaching ALL the values we want our children to exhibit is Scouting.

This is a remarkable book based on Mr. Towley's trek to speak with significant Eagle Scouts and have them reflect on the impact of Scouting on their lives. These folks are truely great Americans. I think Mr. Townley has captured, in a well written and easy to consume book, the essence of this remarkable achievement - earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

In times of difficulty, it is refreshing to read a book showing that being trifty, honorable and patriotic, as well as reverent and trustworthy, still carries impact in the way we should deal with ourselves.

This book is not preachy or overly sentimental. It has the right tone and one speeds through it.

I recommend this book to all parents who are searching for ways to improve their children's development in the right way. The folks Mr. Towley has selected as examples of what Scouting has done for them are people who got it, get it and improve the lives of others. Great book!

I was extremely impressed and inspired by this book. In many ways, it renewed my passions in Scouting. As a fellow Eagle Scout, I would say that his analysis on what is an Eagle Scout, and what drives Eagles is right on the money.

I would advise all new Eagles be presented this book with the instructions: 'Read it now, if you wish. Read it upon completion of college or upon reaching the age of 21. Read it again (at a minimum)when you reach each successive decade in age.'

It should be required read for professional scouters and a highly recommended read for scoutmasters.

What a great book! On the surface it's a love letter to Scouting, and especially Eagle Scouts, but it's actually a lot more. At its core, it's about values. We hear a lot about values today, all too often from people who don't really understand the term, but Townley shows us what values in action can produce.

"Legacy of Honor" is about duty, responsibility, doing one's best, not giving up, failing and trying again, and our favorite American trait--the can-do attitude. It's full of wonderfully inspirational stories that even a non-Scout can appreciate. Townley could make a career as a motivational speaker.

A superb book which points out the excellence of the Boy Scout program and the Eagle Scouts in particular. "Legacy of Honor" would be the perfect gift for every new Eagle Scout!

It's also the best motivator I've seen for adult leaders; those new to being a Scouter and those who've been doing it for years. In his interviews with Eagles, Townley discovers different reasons why Eagles are leaders in their communities and enterprises; perfect material for that Scoutmaster's Minute. It is a comprehensive review of why we teach the principles and skills that comprise the Boy Scouts of America. It also summarizes why the program is so successful.

"Legacy" is an essential book for every Scouter's library.

Alvin Townley is an authentic Eagle scout. His values are clearly reflected in his writing. I was excited about his book and could hardly wait to hear about his journey across the country. His idea was to travel around the USA for a year and interview Eagles of all ages and from all walks of life. The many stories he relates are full of inspiration, but his delivery is a bit dry. Speaking to many fellow eagles, including well known business leaders and politicians, Townley gains insight into his own eagle status and the core values of America. His better told encounters are those with Ross Perot, Richard Lugar, James Lovell, and Scott Strauss, a hero of September 11th.

Legacy of Honor is the perfect gift for every new Eagle Scout. A compendium of stories about Eagle Scouts, it will inspire new Eagles to live up to the "legacy" -- once an Eagle, always an Eagle. The Scouting standards set by Eagles have provided key leadership in all walks of life in America -- government, the military, business, education, and the ministry. Often we see in the media what's wrong about our country; this book will tell you what's great about many of our youth.

Those of us in Boy Scouting have heard many stories about famous men who are or were Eagle Scouts, people like Gerald Ford and Stephen Spielberg. Townley goes beyond the familiar in Legacy of Honor, introducing me to men I never knew were Eagle Scouts and to Eagle Scouts I've never heard of but who are making significant contributions to our society. Townley doesn't just offer a Scouting hall of fame, however. He also explores at some length how Scouting's values have influenced these men's lives--and how they have in turn influenced the world. All in all, Legacy of Honor is a great read for anyone with ties to Scouting.
