1.0 out of 5 stars A Knockoff Work of Scholarship

This book on Islamic Anti-Semitism is a big book. It is more than 650 pages in addition to 100 pages of notes and a bibliography. To the uninformed reader, this appears to be a genuine work of unbiased scholarship with a neutral opinion. I do not know Andrew Bostom- He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and does not speak Arabic- but I know from his writing that...

"Whenever a Jew is killed, it is for the benefit of Islam." Andrew Bostom was working on a book about Islamic treatment of "dhimmis," "infidels" or non-Muslims, when he came across this quote by Sufi jurist Sirhindi (d. 1621). The virulence of this quote inspired Bostom to put his general work on Islamic treatment of dhimmis aside, for the moment, and to focus on Islamic anti-Semitism.

Andrew Bostom, a medical doctor, is a careful and ethical researcher and writer. Nowawdays, there is so much political frenzy around the question of Islam, that readers often fear that they are exposed to more heat than light in best-selling books. When reading Andrew Bostom, readers need not worry that they are being spoon fed propaganda.

Bostom works his way with painstaking slowness and exactitude through mountains of primary sources, and he presents that data to the reader, with full citations to original texts. Bostom uses Islam's own documents, including Islamic legal documents on Jews, and historical accounts of Jewish life in Muslim lands, to support his inevitable conclusion: from the earliest days, from the founding of Islam by Mohammed, and from Islam's central text, the Koran, anti-Semitism has been a central aspect of Islam, and any reform of this aspect of Islam will be very difficult.

Bostom effectively debunks three oft-repeated Islam-apologist myths: the alleged Islamic Golden Age, that Muslims learned their anti-Semitism from Christians or the West, and that anti-Semitism arose in the Muslim world only after the recognition of the state of Israel.

There was no "Islamic Golden Age" when persons of various faiths lived in peace and harmony under wise, tolerant Islamic rulers, Bostom insists. From the days of Mohammed, non-Muslims under Muslim rule were subject to taxation, humiliation, oppression, exile, and murder. Bostom devotes great energy to proving this through historical analysis.

Muslims did not learn their anti-Semitism from Christianity. Muslims who had never met a Jew or a Christian brought their culturally-ingrained anti-Semitism with them into India, a largely Hindu and Buddhist sub-continent. Nor did they aquire anti-Semitism from Scientific Racism's or Nazism's racial disdain for Jews. Arabs are Semites, just as Jews are. Muslims forced Jews to wear distinctive badges more than a thousand years before Hitler did so. Christians also had to wear identifying badges under Muslim leaders.

The Koran is replete with anti-Semitic verses, most notoriously, the ones equating Jews with "pigs and monkeys." There is also the hadith, or saying of Mohammed, that rocks will speak to Muslims, asking them to kill Jews. These verses are freely cited by Islamic religious leaders today, as Muslim sermons posted on youtube reveals. Mohammed, the founder of Islam, exercised murderous hostility toward Jews.

It will be very difficult to discover reformers within Islam who wish to co-exist with Jews in respect and tolerance; it will be even harder for those reformers to realize their dreams. Islam leaves no room for reform, especially when it comes to hostility to non-Muslims, especially Jews. The Koran is believed to be the perfect, unchanging, eternal word of God, and the Muslim God refers to Jews as monkey and pigs.

Bostom's book is essential reading for those hoping to understand the truth about Islam.

---------------------------------------
Quick side note, Violence is found in every religion (theistic and atheistic.)

Buddhism and violence (Buddhism has been pretty bloody despite the euphemized western version of peaceful and compassionate Buddhism): Buddhism and Violence (Publications of the Lumbini International Research Institute, Nepal Publications of the Lumbini International Research Institute, Nepal).

Atheism, violence, and genocide: The Irrational Atheist: Dissecting the Unholy Trinity of Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens, Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur, The Plot to Kill God: Findings from the Soviet Experiment in Secularization and Death by Government.

Of course the vast majority of violence and killing throughout history til today has been over secular reasons, like territory and resources. Here is a balanced look at religious violence which talks about religious and secular violence being the same phenomenon: The Myth of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology and the Roots of Modern Conflict.

For a deep analysis of suicide terrorism and its causes and motives, please read Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism. This book is one of the best to study rigorously the dynamics and reasons for suicide terrorism. It includes lots of tables and graphs and is considered to be the most detailed study on suicide terrorism to date - including a database of all suicide attacks from 1980 - 2003 with details on where and how they were done. Suicide terrorism is more secular based than generally presumed and in this book there is even focus on Atheist suicide terrorism - "the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam" or "Tamil Tigers" - which are known to be Atheists and secular suicide terrorists with an impressive rate of causing 76 out of 315 suicide terrorist attacks from 1980 to 2003 according to Pape's data. Another estimate was 168 out of 273 suicide attacks from 1980 to 2000 (Rohan Gunaratna, "Suicide Terrorism: A Global Threat", Jane's Intelligence Review, 20 October 2000). According to the FBI article, "Taming the Tamil Tigers From Here in the U.S", they invented and perfected the use of suicide belts, pioneered women suicide terrorists, and have taken out 2 world leaders - the only organization to do this. They have perfected the suicide vest also.

Conclude whatever you want on "religious violence" - however look at and compare how many people today get killed in the "Name of God" with those who kill in the "name of non-gods" (i.e. family, race, injustice, poverty, resources, economy, disrespect, territory, stereotype, betrayal, depression, drugs, selfish activities, etc.) "Secular" manslaughter out weighs "religious" manslaughter even when you read primary sources of the Crusades and the Conquest in Mexico and the Spanish Inquisition like The First Crusade: "The Chronicle of Fulcher of Chartres" and Other Source Materials (The Middle Ages Series) and The Spanish Inquisition, 1478-1614: An Anthology of Sources. There is usually more to violence than just the ignorant perspective : "because you are an infidel".
----------------------------------------

Andrew Bostom does humanity a great service to historians, theologians, sociologists, archeologists, Christians, Jews, and Muslims by writing this huge book. This book is a database of historical accounts (unaltered and complete) on Islamic sentiments towards Christians, but mainly Jews, throughout the centuries up to today's manifestations anti-Hebrew ideology with incredible detail. One should buy this book just to have an exhaustive history of Muslim persecutions, anti-semitic laws, punishments, stereotypes, beliefs, and even disgust of Christians and Hebrews from the primary sources and secondary sources of Islamic texts. Some peaceful aspects of Islam and pro-Hebrew arguments from historical Muslims are not mentioned in this book because it is not the intent of the author. The Quran does have some verses which show compassion and lots of tolernace towards Jews and Christians.

This book lets history represent itself and allows for the historical Muslims to speak their minds and views as they originally did in their allotted time. Through this book, Historical Islam can be scrutinized and compared to Modern Islam to see if the situation between Muslims and Jews has gotten any better through out the centuries. The Qu'ran is given extensive treatment as well and the contributing authors document verses of the Qu'ran, passages of the Sira (the early biographies of Muhammad) and the Hadith (the traditions of the Muslims) that are used by anti-semitic Muslims to justify their views on their supposed fallen Hebrew and Christian brothers. Along with this, a huge amount of historical testimony, expert commentary, multiple stories of Muslims in power throughout history express their sentiments toward the Hebrew. The origins of Muslim anti-Semitism are documented, including detailed accounts of Muhammad's encounter with the Hebrews during his lifetime.

The book is dense and informative and is to be seen as a historical database for Muslims and non-Muslims in terms of history of relations and views between Muslims and Hebrews. Muslims and non-Muslims should read this book and decide for themselves as to whether Islam was ever completely friendly to the Hebrews and Christians and how Islam has affected world history.

Here are the Parts and Chapter titles of the book (not all chapters will be named since there are so many. It's ridiculous. But, I will mention as many as possible):

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the Middle East explained, May 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Hardcover)
Forget everything that you have ever read claiming that modern Islamic Antisemitism and Arab hatred for Israel was born of Nazi propaganda.

This book will teach you the actual origin of this hatred---the teachings of Mohammed, the Islamic Caliphs who followed him, the companions and scholars who recorded the Hadith (sayings and deeds of Mohammed) and the jurists who wrote Islamic law.

If you read nothing else on the Middle East or Islam this year---or ever---be sure to read this book, from cover to cover. It buries all the lies you've been reading in the mainstream press about the moderation embedded in fundamental Islam.

You'll never believe those press lies again. Nor should anyone.

This review is from: The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Hardcover)
From Kenneth Ellman, Newton, New Jersey,07860, ke@kennethellman.com
I have recently finished reading "The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism by Bostom." I could not put the book down. I read it three times, perhaps more. I am still reading it again.
Bostom's presentation, organization and source material being vaster than my previous exposure gave an immersion that was both compelling and revealing.
I am familiar with the Koran having studied from the very well done edition "Revised and Edited by The Presidency of Islamic Researches, IFTA, Call and Guidance" published by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Qur-an. I have also read from various books such as "The Meaning of the Quran by Maududi" which is published by Islamic Publications (Pvt) Ltd. Lahore. There are parts of the Koran that impressed me with its adoption of the high moral and religious teaching of the Old Testament and parts that astounded me in its banality. I do believe that the Koran was written for its audience at that time. Perhaps for those people it fulfilled and gave them what was then needed. Certainly the commentary and Judicial decision of the Muslim community give greater insight into the meaning the Koran has for its community and geography.

But Bostom has now done a great service to those who want to learn. Every once in a while a book is created by a dedicated individual like Bostom who possesses the skill, commitment and time to exhaustively exclaim on a subject in a fully dispositive and authoritative manner. Whether that book is in the sciences or law or history does not matter. What matters is that such a book shines and leaves much of the related literature behind. You feel that having read the book its point is proven and that little else on that question needs to be told.

What Bostom has done is using unimpeachable sources and fully reliable documentation he has forcefully presented the argument that those who adhere to Islam cannot live in peace and equality with other faiths and peoples. Yes, he couches this argument as being directly related to the literature of conflict between Jews and Muslims, and of that he shows there is no doubt whatsoever. But his presentation leave no question that the legally formalized hatred toward Jews and Israel is fully transferable and perhaps equally directed to our Western Civilization and tradition and that of every other civilization Western or otherwise. And he does this largely but not exclusively with the documentation of various time periods from the Islamic community and others present in the community.

Keep in mind that Bostom in this book is not interested in the validity or merit of the Islamic faith. This is not an attack upon the religious choices made by those who are Muslim. It is though a clear and unassailable portrayal of the Islamic world as Islam views those non-Muslims who make up the rest of humanity. And it shows Islamic law and practice as a shadow and whip upon the human dignity and a miserable weight upon the future of the rest of humanity.

IF the beliefs and practices of the majority of those who adhere to Islam are truly as reflected in the sources and literature that Bostom has collected, then humanity will have a continuing nightmare that will only be resolved by the defeat and repudiation of such practices and ideas.
His work provides an insight in what Israel must cope with on a daily basis and with why Israel is only the first of many targets in this attack upon civilization as we know it. The Muslim world now has full and complete access to Western science and technology. If Bostom is correct then Islamic Law will use Western attainments as a sword to destroy what Islam perceives as its enemy and an incompatible civilization. Bostom has provided a valuable academic and scholarly discourse of this haunting problem. Kenneth Ellman, ke@kennethellman.com

Additional Comment on January 18, 2009:
This is in reply to those critical reviews and to "M.Sullivan", "Sam" and others who give no details of the alleged mistakes in this book.
I assume they give no details because they in reality cannot find any errors.
If you believe the author has committed error in the book then you should state where in the book that can be found and support it with citations to other authority such as the Koran.
You do not refer to any citations nor quote and page reference any support for your assertions. You fail to make any showings that this author made any statements that are untrue.
Where are mistakes by this author? You do not even refer to any chapter or verse of the Koran, and you pose no questions. You say nothing.
Why don't you actually make an analysis and aid in understanding.
Explain with citations what you are putting forth. What are the factual errors of this author?
Thank you.
Kenneth Ellman, Newton, New Jersey 07860, ke@kennethellman.com

This is in reply to the review of Mr. M. Himed.
My additional comment here on Dec. 7, 2009
I originally reviewed this book on June 15, 2008 and made subsequent additions. However I find the comments of Mr. M.Himed significant and useful.
I thank Mr. Himid for the time he spent to give another view of this significant book. And I think it must agreed that due to the subject matter and careful attention to detail this book cannot be ignored.
I am very impressed with the quality of the scholarship of Bostom.
But Mr.Himid brings out that the tests relied upon by Bostom are not being fully and accurately discussed by him. Certainly many religious works can only be properly interpreted when considered as a whole and when the interrelationships that the writing has with other texts are read in conjunction and combination. In Yiddishkeit, you cannot just read the Torah (Old Testament) and properly understand it without also reading and understanding the Oral Torah, known as the Talmud. These books are really inseparable. Further there are ancient commentaries and other very old works by Jewish scholars which have explained, discussed and interpreted the written Torah and without which the written Torah (Old Testament) could not be properly understood.
We should further review the comments of Mr. Himid to gain a better understanding.
I join with him in his review statements that:
"The point is that whenever a Muslim calls Jews the descendants of Apes and Pigs- whether it be imam Al-Sudays of Mecca or a 3 year old child on Youtube- they are inaccurately interpreting this verse in the Quran.". I believe what you are saying is that the Quran is NOT properly understood by some of the Muslim faith and that Islam should not be blamed for the errors of understanding of some of the Muslims.
Mr. Himid also states in discussing the death of Jesus that:
"But it is clear in the Quran in chapter 35 verse 18 that "no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another soul." This ends any discussion on whether Jews are to be punished or carry the weight of their ancestors."
AND Mr. Himed states:
"He has also taken some clearly anti-Semitic writings and speeches by some prominent Muslims and equated that as the belief that all mainstream Muslims hold against Jews. "
Another good point.
I do believe though that what Bostom has brought out is there is a strong cultural proclivity of many in the Islamic nation, to use the Quran as authority to kill and destroy Jews and Israel and those of many other faiths. This is certainly a fact. There are in fact many of the Muslim faith who believe that their religion commands them to subjugate and injure and destroy other culture and faiths. So Mr. Himid, in contrast to Mr. Bostom, does raise an interesting point as to whether this destruction and hatred under the banner of Islam is really a cultural and political movement and NOT based upon the Quran itself. Himid seem to believe that in fact many of the destructive actions by those who claim to be of the Muslim faith actually violate the teaching of the Quran.
So this in itself would be a subject for a wonderful book, but it must be written by a respected Muslim scholar and not from another faith.
I will study this further. It always shows that things may not be as simple as they seem.
How wonderful if it were true that the war with Western Civilization is not with the Quran but with a group of misled murderers.
Thank you.

This review is from: The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Hardcover)
Professor Bostom has accomplished a daring feat by refuting an age old myth within the discipline of Middle Eastern History. His thesis statement, that Jews were not treated better under Muslim auspices, cuts through preconceived notions. It is an immense work that will take the avid historian weeks to go through, but it is all worth the work. Even though he is not an historian by trade he still manages to conjure new and old muslim source material, which makes his case all the more solid. It is not only a wondrous scholarly achievement, it is a stab at the greater narrative of Islamic history and religiosity. Come one come all and take a walk on the historical wild side, cause you might never come back. Read it and enjoy.

Andrew Bostom has performed an invaluable service in editing this volume. All one hears are opinions and projections of personal beliefs onto the religion of Islam. (Our President's view is one such example.) Using the words and expositions of Islamic leaders and scholars, rather than our own revisionism, Dr. Bostom shows clearly that there is a very long history of anti-Jewish bias and prejudice in Islamic thought. The concept that all this "anti-Zionism" is a phenomenon of the 20th century is put to rest in a clear, cool and scholarly fashion. His opening esssay - with ca. 1,000 footnotes - should be required reading in every house of worship and university in the Western world. Sadly, this will not happen but readers can purchase the book and see the facts for themselves.

In today's world where the threats of Radical Islamists may set fire to the whole world there are many apologists for Islam that say Jew Hatred is not part of "true" Islam. This work documents and exposes the truth from Muhammad to today using the most accepted references and Islamic scriptures to document his findings. If you want to understand the truth of the relationship between Islam, the Jewish people and thus the motivations behind Muslim actions today you need to read this book. This book exposes the very soul of Islam, the one all Muslims call the perfect example of a Muslim life lived and one all Muslims seek to copy, Muhammad as well as those that have followed after him not only in words but also in the actions they lived in their lives. This book is a MUST READ during this time in World History!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource on Islam's Views on the Jews, June 24, 2008
By
This review is from: The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Hardcover)
Andrew Bostom has produced a magisterial exposé of the foundations, development and impact of Islamic anti-semitism. Shrouded in perverse denial and historical revisionism, Islamic Jew-hatred is in fact grounded in the Qur'an and the life of Muhammad (the Sunna). Bostom has done the world a courageous service by exposing the roots together with the fruits of this persistent characteristic of Islamic theology and practice. In doing so, he has exposed and disarmed many deceits.
This will be a standard reference on Islam's treatment of the Jews for decades to come. A brilliant and confronting work, The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism is a must-read for all who would understand Islam and its sacred history.

After Dr. Bostom's book, no scholar, politician or educated layman can ever again justify repeating the Islamic apologetic that "Muslims hate Jews because of Israel" or any such nonsense. A more thorough debunking of this myth, I cannot imagine.
This, together with his previous "Legacy of Islamic Jihad" lay bare the vast majority of the "politically correct" interpretations of Muslim history as a tolerant, peace-loving people. Their own writers and history tear down any such pretenses, and Dr. Bostom's two books demonstrate it beyond a shadow of doubt. There was no enlightened, tolerant, multicultural Andalusia (or any other Muslim-ruled nation). Muslim Jew-hatred has its origins in Islam's holy books as surely as the real history of Islamic conquest is chock-full of destruction, massacre, slavery and savagery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well researched and documented work. 5/5, January 25, 2009
This review is from: The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Hardcover)
I truly feel, from researching source documents, historical specificity and the current realities of the World today; Arab-Israeli Conflict, "Radical" Islam, the invention of a "Palestinian" People, 100% of Terrorsts today are Arab/Moslem and their cohorting with Communists and Freedom Haters, be it on the battlefields in Gaza, Afganistan, Iraq, Paris, London, the Hate Rallies of San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Montreal, London and within our bastions of psychologically conditioned "progressive" ignorance: "Academia"......one cannot logically and factually state that Islam is a "religion of peace" and that it has nothing to do with every conflict on Earth today be it Philippines, Sudan, India, Europe or the ever blown out of proportions: Israel. To give Bostom's book a 1 out displays either an highly indoctrinated ignorance or a like closed mind to both reality and historically documented factual correctness....not "Political Correctness"...

Comparable to Bostom's earlier work of notable mention "The Legacy of Jihad", this book is supremely documented. For one to gain an idea if the pages within Bostom's work contains truth or myths simply read the Quran, Hadith and various Suras themselves. One can gain immense knowledge from the source material, like "The Communist Manifesto" re: Communism or Hitler's "Mein Kempf" for Nazism. With Christianity or Judaism the Bible then, with that in mind, delve through various historical specificity leading from the respective ideological base to today's deeds. There is no question that Islam grew through Jihad, Holy War, and not through peaceful means. One need only review the history of Egypt, the fall of Constantinople or the once Christian Arab state of Lebanon to see the realities of Isalm and its scriptural quest towards Global domination. "My principal object in coming to Hindustan.....has been to accomplish two things. The first was to war with the Infidels, the enemies of the Mohammadan religion; and by this religious warfare to acquire some claim to reward in the life to come. The other was....that the army of Islam might gain something by plundering the wealth and valuables of the infidels; plunder in war is as lawful as their mothers' milk to Musalmans who war for their faith." - Amir Timur: Tamerlane, 1398.

There are many related books that are highly documented and factually based should you wish to delve into further study. Those by Dr. Robert Spencer, Ba'at Yeor or Joan Peter's "From Time Immemorial" if the Arab/Israeli conflict is of interest.

I cannot begin to discuss or even give the numerous examples which Bostom brings into focus on presenting the validity of historical deeds on the part of the followers of Mohammedanism, in this case Jews.

One need not look past the highly questionableness of each and every leader Islam professes or affords admiration: Mohammed, Omar, Sultan Mehemet II, Timurlane, Rashid ad-Din Sinan, Salidin, Hajj Amin Al-Husseini to Osama bin Laden.

For an idea of what you are getting into you might do a simple search for one of Bostom's interviews on YouTube or visit Www.SomebodyHelpMe.Info for a more rounded source on the on-goings with Islam and the Middle East Conflict.

An extremely well researched and documented work. A 5/5 in my book.
