3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not her best
This 250-page story started out with a lot of potential, but fizzled about 2/3 of the way into the book. It would have been great if Krentz had written the murder-mystery angle a bit better. Instead, what the reader gets is another of her Scooby Doo storylines that makes you roll your eyes.

This 250-page story started out with a lot of potential, but fizzled about 2/3 of the way into the book. It would have been great if Krentz had written the murder-mystery angle a bit better. Instead, what the reader gets is another of her Scooby Doo storylines that makes you roll your eyes.

What do I mean by Scooby Doo? Think back to when you were a kid watching that cartoon. Every show was a mystery of some sort and at the end of it the villain would spill all of his evil plans to dominate the world while holding "the gang" hostage. Krentz does the same thing. I mean, how many criminals are really going to take the time to detail the how and the why of their crimes to the victims? And how many victims will care to drag the story out of their captors while at gunpoint? Most victims would be more interested in survival than in assauging their curiosity.

Another aspect of the book that became a major annoyance after awhile was her overuse of exclamation points. Practically every other sentence ended with an exclaimer. It got to be too much. It had the same affect as writing in all caps.

No Krentz book is "bad" per se, but this is one of her less noble efforts. I'd save this book for when you are down to the nitty gritty and have absolutely nothing else left of hers to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible, August 7, 2007
This review is from: Legacy (Mass Market Paperback)
to be honest, i hated this book. i could barely finish it... i hated conn - he was a jerk. and honor wasn't very bright, and her sister was worse, my god! for once, can we get a sister/friend/etc who doesn't betray her friend/sister/etc by telling the man where she went... i know my friends would NEVER tell an ex or a guy i was fighting with where i was if i didn't want them to know...

also, conn was practically abusive and then honor feels sorry for him! get a life - i don't care how bad a day he has had, that doesn't give him the right to attack you...

regardless, find another book; maybe one of her newer books, b/c they are pretty good, but skip this one

Con Landry was the man on the spot, helping her free her sister from the blackmailer, but what Honor did not know, Conn was running a more sinister game. One of revenge, and the key to the mystery is the race horse his father and her father owned as partners.

A very enjoyable tale that has been reprinted more than once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and not predictable, June 28, 2001
This review is from: Legacy (Mass Market Paperback)
This book has a charming storyline: love, murder, theft, and revenge in the horse racing world. (Fortunately, it doesn't go so far into educating the reader about horse racing that you get Racing 101) The revenge is plausible without becoming trite, and the love that develops between the main characters is romantic but not maudlin. The bad guy lures the reader in and while you realize who he is, it takes the the whole story to explain why. For me, it is a big plus when the character have dimensions that aren't completely revealed. A sweet love story with a good who-done-it, perfect for summer reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written in the Intrigue line, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Legacy (Paperback)
When Constantine Landry saves Honor Mayfield from following a loan shark right into the hands of the police, she feels fortunate that he was there to keep her out of a troublesome situation. She is grateful enough to agree to see him again, but still wary of a man who seems just a little too smooth and who tells her next to nothing about himself.

Conn has been watching Honor for the last few months, just waiting for a way to insinuate himself into her life. Her unfortunate association with the loan shark gives him the perfect opportunity to play hero. But as Conn gets closer to Honor, he finds himself getting more than he had bargained for, while finding out little about the matter which had brought him to California, a secret which ties their pasts together.

With an engaging writing style that sets this author apart, the story is set against a backdrop of horse-racing, beach houses and California lifestyle. The hero's inner-conflict with regard to the heroine keeps the reader engaged and leads to charged climax.

This story is also available as a reprint, ISBN# 1551661489.

1.0 out of 5 stars too predictable, August 31, 2001

I'm big fan of her books. But I didn't enjoy this particular book. The plot was too predictable. Characters too unbelievable. A woman sleeps with a man and become involved with him that she didn't even know what he does for a living Cmon. and by the end of the novel you still don't know what he does and she states it doesn't matter. Be for real.
