Book Description

Jack Olsen, a down-on-his luck former cop, seeks inner healing at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Out fishing one day, he witnesses a deliberate collision that leaves one man dead. Hired by the elderly victim's companion to investigate the so-called accident, Jack discovers another world beneath the surface of paradise---one characterized by organized crime, political corruption, drugs and gambling. Working with Kate Carter, the new love of his life, Jack follows a money trail littered with greed, obsession and hate. With one final throw of the dice, it appears he's turned up snake eyes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very little action March 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the book starts out well, it soon bogs down. Not until the very end does the action resume. In addition there are way too many grammatical errors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great August 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed it enough to finish reading it. Jack was not too bright as a detective. He found the evidence but always poked the bear with no protection. And what about Mudbug, the dog. Was he in the book only to be eviscerated. Not a good touch.

I grew up in Missouri and very familiar with the location of the story. The characters are very realistic and the action keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable February 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This tale is so dated it's verging on the farcical. The attitudes to women are laughable but of course totally in keeping with that bygone age.

I enjoyed this book and will look for other Michael Smith's books for future reading. The story keeps you turning the pages to see what the next event is going to be, and who will be involved.
