Important, delightfully written perspective on our national heritage, October 28, 2010
This review is from: Legacy on the Land: A Black Couple Discovers Our National Inheritance and Tells Why Every American Should Care (Hardcover)
This handsome volume, written in scintillating prose, tells how an African American couple took up the challenge to "see America first" and just HAD to tell the rest of us what we are missing! Audrey and Frank Peterman made time to visit many of this nation's national parks and relate how the experience transformed them into environmental activists who are committed to encouraging all Americans, and especially African-Americans, to experience these national treasures and never forget that the Earth is our home. We must honor the land on which we live and preserve its essence for all generations! Special features: Appendices that list 20 official "Black" units of the National Park system, in which African-Americans significantly participated in their history, such as the African burial Ground National Monument in new York City, and a dozen other parks that reflect contributions of African-American ancestors such as: the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which includes the Presidio where the Buffalo Soldiers were once posted. This is a highly engaging memoir--part travelogue, part commentary on the biases and importance of the environmental preservation movement. It reframes arguments about why all Americans should value our collectively-owned sacred places and makes the subject appealing to people who have previously ignored these magnificent spaces or taken them for granted--like the authors did before their first trip! Highly recommended.
