The photo-illustrated book gives an overview of late nineteenth century and early twentieth century education in Ohio and the other five states in the former Northwest Territory. From log schools to frame and brick schools, the text describes how rules organized districts, how teachers were recruited, how lessons were taught, what classroom furnishings were used, and how consolidation of schools brought about changes. Over 140 black and white photographs help portray daily lessons and the past and current conditions of one-room school houses. States included are Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania.
