Brian has outdone herself,
By
This review is from: Legacy (Private, Book 6) (Paperback)
Easton Academy seems like the place where everyone wants to be. The place where beautiful people congregate to get an education that doesn't just include what you can learn from a book; but, rather, what you can learn from corrupting incoming students, bribing teachers with money, power, and affluence, and, if required, killing someone. But people don't always last at Easton. Noelle is gone. Ariana is gone. Kiran is gone. Taylor is gone. And now, even the perky Cheyenne Martin can no longer be seen traipsing the hallways of Easton. The only one left standing is scholarship student Reed Brennan. But when it comes to Easton, maybe sticking around isn't always the best thing.
Cheyenne Martin's apparent suicide shocked her classmates - especially the ultra-exclusive Billings Girls - and rocked the entire atmosphere surrounding Easton. After all, in just a year, she's the second student to die at the hand of evil, and just one out of many to leave an empty void in the student population. But Cheyenne lived, breathed, and worshipped at the shrine of Easton; hence, dwelling on her death would be exactly the opposite of what she would have wanted - or so everyone is insisting. According to her friends, Cheyenne would have wanted everyone to get on with their lives, and get ready for the Legacy - the social event of the season that anybody who's anybody will be attending. But, oddly enough, the Billings Girls have been left off the invite list, and haven't received invitations to the gala - even though they're sure to be the belles of the ball. And, with Cheyenne out of the picture, Reed is elected as the new Billings president, and the task of finding out who is keeping the Billings Girls away from the Legacy rests solely on her shoulders. The detective work is piling up around her; but with an old friend back in the picture, and enough gossip and dirt on everyone surrounding her; Reed can't help but relish in her newfound position. But now that she has everything she could have ever dreamed of, it's obvious to everyone around her that she has everything to lose. And when it comes to Easton, losing is what it's all about. I honestly don't know how she does it, but Kate Brian has written yet another amazing installment in the PRIVATE series which does anything but put your mind to rest. Once more, Brian has woven a tale that incorporates fashion, money, glitz, glamour, and gossip into a neat little package; but has eloquently paired it with enough mystery and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat long after the last page is turned. The eeriness that seems to enshroud the characters, along with the entire Easton campus, gives the reader chills up and down their spine; and the somberness that seems to ooze out of each character casts a very dreary tone over the whole tale - but this only intrigues you even more. LEGACY is, quite possibly, the best book in the series to date. Brian has outdone herself. Erika Sorocco Freelance Reviewer

I don't think I will ever get tired of the Private series. Legacy is fantastic and quite different from the first few simply because Reed is in charge and is trying to stay sane while being a Noelle. I love Reed's relationship with Josh but am intrigued by her feelings for Dash so I look forward to the next book in the series to see what happens.

Brian has written another amazing book. I'm in love with the Private Series. It is one of my favorite series. It is well written and suspenseful I recommend it for all teen girls. Brian does an amazing job describing the events and the emotions of Reed and other characters. If you haven't read the other books in the series, read them first, it is basically a must to understand this book.

The curse of the scholarship student...,
This review is from: Legacy (Private, Book 6) (Paperback)
Cheyenne Martin's suicide is a shock for everyone at Easton Academy, especially for Reed Brennan. Who would have thought that the ambitious, power-hungry and traditionalist Billings girl would take her own life after she is expelled? But Reed feels undeniable guilt. Apparently, Cheyenne had sent her an e-mail before she killed herself, blaming Reed for her decision to kill herself. As if that weren't bad enough, it appears that Cheyenne had arranged for the e-mail to be resent every Friday. Cheyenne is immediately forgotten -- at least by the other Billings girls -- when Easton students are ostracized and snubbed from this year's Legacy, the biggest and most highly-expected exclusive party of the year. Reed shows a great deal of leadership, which is why, in an unanimous vote, she becomes the president of Billings hall. Wonderful things happen after Reed becomes leader. She gets tons of perks, money she's never had in her life, and power she'd never before envisaged. But will her leadership be threatened when Noelle returns to Easton? Noelle was a senior last year, but after getting expelled from Easton and getting community service, she has to repeat her senior year, and her father threatens to sue if they don't let her back in Easton. Will Reed be able to get invites to this year's Legacy? On top of everything else, she and Josh are having problems. She wants to be a Billings girl and hang out with Noelle, he doesn't. There is also the fact that Reed has a crush on Dash, Noelle's ex, who is now in Yale. This brings a whole new conflict into her already complicated life. To top it all off, someone is watching her, messing with her. Is Cheyenne really dead, or -- oh horror of horrors -- has Ariana somehow escaped from the mental institution she now resides?
This new installment in the Private series brings new drama and conflicts for Reed. At first, the presidency seems like a dream come true. Then everything falls apart, and she asks herself if the presidency is a blessing... or a curse. The Billings girls are as silly and glitzy as ever. A new Starbucks-like coffee shop is built in the school, which will probably become their hangout. Reed does get a little annoying in this installment -- self-absorbed, always after Noelle like a lapdog -- and I wanted to slap her a few times, especially as far as her relationship with Josh is concerned. I won't spoil the reader by supplying details, but she deserves what she gets toward the end. This installment is as addictive and riveting as the ones before it (with the exception of Inner Circle), but I've discovered something about Kate Brian: she is not consistent with the secondary characters' physical description. Eye and hair colors change with each installment. Josh's eyes had been green in other books. In this book, they are blue. London had been described as blonde -- she is brunette in this one. At first, I thought it was me who couldn't keep up with the descriptions, but it appears that the author herself is confused. I wish Brian would keep a file of the smaller characters' descriptions, something like, "Josh -- curly blonde hair, green eyes," etc. Also, the thing with the e-mail isn't resolved in this book. No one knows who, if anyone, was sending it or if it indeed had been an auto-send e-mail. It's almost as if Brian completely forgot to resolve that issue, but maybe we'll just have to wait till the next book to find out. There is, like the other books, a huge twist at the end. I find it hilarious that Reed has gone through so much in such a short amount of time. If this much happened in real life, Easton would have been shut down because parents wouldn't pay to send their students to such a death and tragedy trap, and other boarding schools would probably quake at the thought of welcoming a scholarship student into their school. Other than that, I absolutely LOVE Legacy and I look forward to reading Ambition. Also, it appears that Brian will release a spinoff from this series, starring Ariana. I will definitely check that one out!

I started the Private series twice before actually continuing; there is something dark about the writing that I had a hard time acclimating to. Now I am a complete addict. I have pre-ordered every book available, because I can't wait to see where the series takes me.
This book was no exception to my Private-love. Legacy begins after Cheyenne commits suicide, and Reed has become the unofficial and soon to be official head of Billings House. They are all recovering from the shock of Cheyenne's death when they find out that Billings House has been blackballed from the Legacy. Noelle's return makes Reed feel both less and more secure in her role as head of Billings, but there is no doubt that she is helpful as Reed tries to get her girls re-invited into the celebration of the year. Will Reed and Noelle be successful? Or have the Billings Girls been demoted permanently? And just who is behind all of this anyway? Beyond that, will the girls manage to get past their frumpy new principal on Legacy night? Let's just hope Reed's presidency of Billings is more of a blessing than a curse.

Fantastic but unpredictable...,
This review is from: Legacy (Private, Book 6) (Paperback)
I absolutely loved Legacy! I think it's the best book in the series so far, followed by Confessions. But I'm actually wondering if Cheyenne DID actually die. It sounds crazy, but at Easton, anything can obviously happen. It's just questionable because there have been times when Reed has supposedly "seen" her, but towards the end of the book, when she's running to find Josh, she could swear she saw Cheyenne laughing with her friends. I was pretty startled by that!!! Even though Reed was pretty much pass-out drunk when she witnessed this, it's unpredictable what will happen. And then the very last couple pages of the book, when Gwendolyn Hall burns down, and the Headmaster looks directly at Reed, I almost collapsed. I honestly believe she might get expelled, or at least thrown out of Billings. I just hope that nothing happened to Josh and he and Reed get back together! I CAN'T WAIT TO READ AMBITION!!!!

Good YA Series,

Caution: This review contains spoilers!
Reed and the rest of the Billings Girls are back in Legacy, book six of the Private Series. They are mourning the loss of Cheyenne and trying to get answers to their questions surrounding her suicide. This is the second death on the Easton campus and the question is how can tragedy strike the sheltered and the elite? Cheyenne was president of Billings House prior to her death. Now that the presidency is vacant, only one Billings Girl seems appropriate to replace her: Reed. The same day Reed accepts the nomination, a surprise awaits her. Noelle is back at Easton Academy. Meanwhile, Halloween approaches and it's time for the Legacy. There's just one problem: the Easton students have been blackballed. And no one knows why. Now that Reed is president, it's up to her to get everyone invites. As much as she enjoys being president of Billings House, Reed also learns it comes with a price. |
