5.0 out of 5 stars The Continuing Saga of the Legacy of Jack the Ripper, July 19, 2009

This review is from: Legacy of the Ripper (Paperback)
'Does violent death have a name? Can evil truly be born into the world, evil so deep that it is bred into the genetic make-up of an individual? Until I came to this place and met the man who made me begin to suspect that such an evil could exist, I'd have been as dismissive as most of my profession at the prospect of such a possibility... Dr. Ruth Truman, Psychiatrist.'

Porter's book A Study in Red tells about the Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper. As the story goes, Robert Cavendish, who was a psychiatrist in modern day, received the journal from his father, who received it from his father, who received it from his father. The original Cavendish was also a psychiatrist who had a patient he found to be no other than the famous Jack the Ripper. Thus began the story of A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper.

After Robert Cavendish's death the journal was passed on to his nephew Jack Reid.
Upon receiving his "legacy" Jack's life becomes twisted in what will be known by modern day London as the "The Brighton Ripper Case." Murders are taking place following the same pattern as those of the original Jack the Ripper.

Wright and Holland have worked the case from the first murder. With the help of Alice Nickels, who is a "Ripperologist," a plan is set to capture the modern day Ripper hopefully before he strikes again. This plan ends with the capture, trial and institutionalization of Jack Reid. But did he really commit these gruesome murders? If so, did he do it alone? He insists that there were others that actually set him up and committed the murders. He even admitted to having received the journal and to the effect reading it had upon him. The police believe the journal never existed but was instead a fixation of his distorted imagination. So after Jack's removal from society and the murders ceasing, it appears that the police really have found and caught their man. But what happened to the journal and legacy? Will the present owner, whoever it might be, pick up where Jack supposedly left off? Read Legacy of the Ripper and find out for yourself. I think you will be as surprised as I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Ripper Series, September 13, 2010
This review is from: Legacy of the Ripper (Paperback)
I've been on a Jack the Ripper kick recently, and after devouring dozens upon dozens of fictional accounts of Saucy Jack, I can tell you that there are a lot of less than inspirational hack jobs out there with nothing new to offer the legend of one of the world's most notorious serial killers.

Gladly, Brian Porter's Ripper series is not on the list of disappointments. A Study in Red was so good that I quickly picked up the sequel in the hopes that it would be almost as enjoyable, and my expectations were easily surpassed! With story lines converging from two different time periods, on a path that leads from Whitechapel to Warsaw, Porter weaves an intricate plot with enough complicated and occasionally confounding twists in turns to keep even the most well-read Ripperologist guessing as to where things will end up. If only there were more Jack the Ripper novels out there penned by talented authors like Porter.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ripper and a great story, what more could you want?, June 3, 2010
This review is from: Legacy of the Ripper (Paperback)
By Brian L. Porter
Published by Double Dragon Publishing
ISBN: 978-1554046904

Legacy of the Ripper by Brian L. Porter starts with the story of Jack Reid the nephew of Robert Reid who upon Robert's death has inherited the mysterious `Jack the Ripper' journal.

Jack starts to show disturbing actions as a child, which was thought to be taken care of. As he got older his personality changed and all was well, for a little while; that was until he read the journal.

Murders were being committed and they were similar to Jack the Ripper's. Could Jack have been the person behind these murders? Could the journal have swept him up into a life of crime and deceit?

Porter leaves the reader hanging to each and every word on the page. The reader will get wrapped in, absorbed into the story of how Jack Reid is part of this. The rich details lead the reader on a wonderful chase of time and adventure through the 1800's and the present time in the book.

There is no doubt that Porter has brought about a sequel to A Study in Red that is not only intriguing, even for those that don't study Jack the Ripper history, but a tale that makes you yearn to find out did Jack really do these awful things, or has The Ripper came back to commit again?

The book tends to jump around in places giving different perspectives from some of the characters. However, this does not hinder the story, but it helps to enlighten the reader, see through the eyes of the character and participate in a story like no other.

A fascinating, brilliant story by one of the best writers out there. It is worth not only buying, but remembering what a good story really looks like.

Go to Amazon and pick this up now! You never know what lurks in the shadows.

This review is from: Legacy of the Ripper (Paperback)
This sequel centers on Jack Thomas Reid, the nephew of Robert Cavendish, the protagonist of A Study in Red, the first book in the series. When Reid is confined to Ravenswood for a series of murders in Brighton that hauntingly mimic the work of the famous Jack the Ripper, Reid maintains his innocence. He recalls being befriended by a man named Michael, drugged and brought before a mysterious figure who he believes framed him for the murders. With an ingenious display of imagination, Brian Porter takes us on journeys through Reid's eyes which bring us to Warsaw and Malta, leading Reid to a bizarre conclusion that I won't disclose here. Suffice it to say that these journeys are essential to learning the truth about these grisly murders that took place in Brighton AND in 1888 Whitechapel. It's all tied up in a stunning and clever conclusion. A must-read for all Ripper fans as well as amateur sleuths, [...]

The Legacy of The Ripper
By
Brian L Porter

The story begins with Jack Reid confined to a psychiatric hospital, having been found guilty of copycat killings of Jack the Ripper. The killings took place in Brighton, a seaside resort on the south coast of England. In his defence, Jack tells the police he is innocent and that he had been drugged and framed for the crimes. Only when one of the detectives on the case decides to investigate further, does the true story emerge.

This is another thrilling story penned by Brian L Porter. Following on from his masterpiece, A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper, Porter goes on to tell what happens when Jack Reid inherits the secret papers left to him by his late Uncle Robert. Set in the present day, the author cleverly leaves the reader on a cliff-hanger at the end of each chapter, as he tells how Detective Inspector Holland and Sergeant Wright set about discovering, who is brutally killing young women on their patch. Like A Study in Red, this is another gripping novel and I found I was unable to put it down. Well done Brian L Porter.
