Honest and hilariously funny., June 27, 2001
This review is from: Legacy of Silence (Paperback)
Pastor is brutally honest, hilariously funny, and able to capture the essence of the moment, taking me along with her, turning pages as fast as I could. I was completely captivated by this poignant, yet at times hilarious story.
Pastor's is a story never before really told. She describes in vivid detail how a jewish family's persecution did not end with the war, but followed them into their "new" life in Venezuela. In their new home, the continuing, consuming fear of being discovered as jews caused the protagonist's parents to raise the family as Catholics, denying the richness of long loved jewish traditions, and with self-hatred and shame for being jewish.
Amidst the author's rich and engaging dialogs of the family's lively interactions and stresses in the new country, the reality of the silent annihilation of another family's jewish heritage lies silent.

What a surprise! Captivating! I couldn't put this book down. I never thought the viewpoints and relationship between two sisters could be portrayed in such an fascinating manner. In addition to exploring these sisters' idiosyncratic and eccentric ways, the book also exposes some of the effects of the Holocaust on subsequent generations of survivors. The narrative style of this book is both straight-forward and honest, with a humorous flair and a way with words that delivers the reader smoothly through the characters' triumphs, tragic moments and transformations.
