Legacy of Steel is by far one of the best books ever written for the Dragonlance Saga. Mary Herbert has taken a minor charcacter, Sara Dunstan and turned her into one of the most compelling and interesting charcacters ever to grace the pages of the dragonlance world. We see a relationship of trust, care, and understanding between a dragon and a human which has never before been discribed. Herbert balances the story with the action and intrigue immaculately. You really can feel the emotion of all the characters and the bond between Sara and Cobalt. My only complaint, the book was too short. I wanted more. I only hope Herbert writes more Dragonlance novels, especially involving Sara and Cobalt.

Unlike the first book in this series (Chris Pierson's SPIRIT OF THE WIND), this book doesn't have a compelling plot that draws the reader into the book. There is a bare semblance of a plot, but nothing truly engaging. It's about Sara Dunstan's (Steel Brightblade's foster mother) infiltration of the regrouped Knights of Takhisis. Herbert tells this story with no real goal observable to the reader. There is an ultimate goal of the book, but it's really just to set up a story element that will appear in subsequent books in the Dragonlance universe.

The big redeeming quality of this book is the character of Sara Dunstan. Readers were first introduced to her in Weis & Hickman's THE SECOND GENERATION and we saw more of her in their DRAGONS OF SUMMER FLAME. This book fleshes here character out much more than those two did. Since the book is told from her point of view, we get to observe the various facets of her character. This is important since I get the feeling that she will be playing a larger role down the road, possibly in Weis & Hickman's War of Souls trilogy (which I have yet to read).

The writing in the book was solid, although the supporting characters all seemed pretty one dimensional. The new general of the Knights of Takhisis was kind of interesting and it would be neat to see her fleshed out in another book at some point. Herbert does a good job of telling the story and getting to the point where the necessary things (I don't want to ruin things for people who haven't read it yet) are established for use in later books. I just wasn't engrossed in the story since there wasn't much of a plot to get involved in. Decent book and Dragonlance fans might find it useful in understanding these new concepts that I'm not mentioning. If you're not a completist, though, you can probably skip it and not miss out on much.

Like i wrote in the title this has been on of the first dragonlance's beautiful books from the very first page.
This could be only my opinion, but if you like dragons stories this is your book....even if i can't tell you this is the best, for sure it is very good story filled by action and quite linear plot, easy and pleasant to read.
It's explain someting about dragon riders,dragon training and dark knights.
Read it and enjoy!

This book was the book that got me started in the fantasy book stufff. I am reading The spirit of the wind right now and it is so cool. I love this kind of stuff now. Reading has never been so fun!

This was a great book. The book portrays the story of Sara Dunstan , adoptive mother of Steel Brightblade three years after the war against Chaos and the creation of the Legion of Steel. An enoyable tale filled with adventure , danger , and honor. A definite read for any dragonlance fan.

I recommed this book to anyone who reads Dragonlance. I was very pleased with the information it gave about past occurences. Legacy of Steel was very interesting. The book is a captivating page turner.

I really love when an author can make a story like this out of a seemingly small placed character. Mary Herbert did a fantastic job on Legacy of Steel. I have read quite a few DL novels and this one is right at the top, almost as good as MW and TH. This book may not be a must read, but it is one that you should take the time to read, trust me you'll enjoy it. All the characters are great, even the love to be hated un-honorable Knights of Takhisis. There is also a good deal of suspense in this book, it's well paced, and the fighting scenes are excellent (including plenty of dragons). If you are a major DL fan and you haven't read this book yet then get it right now, and if you just read Dragonlance time to time then you should get this one over all the others (save for the mainstream MW and TH books of course).

This book just stunned me. I thought it was just going to be another lame old dl book but it was just purely awesome. I felt like I knew the characters pesonally and like I was right there with them!

Ugh, all those years of being Ariakan's "mod" finally paid off. I'm livin' it up all *sigh* with the royalties of this best-selling book which just happens to be awesome as well. Now if only my son would do the dishes, I'd be one happy camper.

A brilliant story magnificently executed in this wonderful Drangonlance novel. Reading "The Dawning of a New Age," I was skeptical in the choices of authors for ushering in the 5th Age. I had my doubts about this book, but they were quickly vanquished as I became more and more absorbed in the story. Tales of honor and justice, the pains of the past and the hopes of the future, all beautifully intwined in this novel of the adopted mother of Steel Brightblade, Sara Dunstan. A **~MUST~** read for any Dragonlance fan. Take my words for it, Mary Hebert did such a brilliant job that I did not want the book to end. I hope she continues to write many more novels for Dragonlance.
