Book Description

"Once upon a time, there lived three witches…."

As a child, Amarrah loved her grandmother's stories of three witches who were members of the king's harem. But they were more than just stories. Amarrah knows she was there with them…and now their legacy, along with an ancient box that once belonged to them, lies in her hands.

Charged with keeping the box safe, Amarrah is heartbroken when it is stolen from her while she moves to America. Years later, she is shocked to see it on TV and is determined to get it back. Tracking the artifact leads her to Sergeant Harrison Brockson, a handsome soldier who stirs memories of a man she knew centuries ago in ancient Babylon. Is Harrison the key to finding the box—or could he be her destiny?

Prequel novella to Maggie Shayne's exciting trilogy, The Portal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maggie, you TEASE! I LOVE it!!! September 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Gah!!!!!!! I love novellas, especially when they are attached to a beautiful series that I want to just snuggle up with or roll around in (like children with glitter or dogs with mud.. etc.. haha!). This was an amazing start to the Portal Series!!

The connection of Amarrah and Harrison is brilliant and the visions/memories of the past are so breathtakingly described and vivid, I just wish I could have been there! (Does this series need to be turned into a movie? I am thinking Oh My Goodness YES!). Loved the adventure and danger throughout the novella. Also really loved the urgency and dedication Amarrah has for her task and that she refuses to let her Grandmother down.

Books like this remind me that somewhere, there are people with a higher purpose that live their whole lives to do for others, follow traditions, and make a difference in the world and the lives of those around them. What a beautiful reminder! Thank you, Maggie for this fantastic peek into the Portal Series! I can't wait for the rest of the series and to find out what happens with the three witches who are sentenced to die for their beliefs...

4.0 out of 5 stars Legacy of the Witch September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Amarrah's childhood lived and breathed the story of the three witches of the King's harem. She's been entrusted with a small box that's been passed down through the generations for safe-keeping. After her Grandmother's death, young Amarrah's move to the US results in the box being lost. Years later she sees it on an "Antiques Roadshow" type television show, and she vows to get the box back. In her efforts she meets a man who causes her brain to flood with memories of another life...

This is my first read of Maggie Shayne's and I can definitely see why she's been recommended to me so many times. I'm glad this novella was free, just so I could get an idea of her style, because I will definitely keep up with this series. I loved Amarrah and Harrison, I loved the change from Amarrah's memories to present time, and the idea of true love over many lifetimes. Destiny has been kept very busy by these two! This really is a fun read and a great opening to a new series. I would highly recommend this.

*This is a clean romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaser! September 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Legacy of the Witch" is a fun, quick-as-lightning read, that lays the groundwork for what looks to be a really exciting series of books. In less than sixty pages, Maggie Shayne introduces the reader to the lovely Amarrah, her ancient namesake, who was a Babylonian "slave girl to the slave girls," and three witches, Indira, Magdalena and Lilia. Amarrah's pursuit of a family heirloom, taken from her when she fled her homeland, leads her to a handsome stranger who she feels she has known before, but she is not the only person seeking the mysterious relic. While a complete story unto itself, this is clearly meant to set the stage for the stories of the three Babylonian witches. By turns sweet, romantic, exciting and heartbreaking, "Legacy of the Witch" quickly pulls the reader into the lives of the characters, both ancient and modern. Looking forward to the trilogy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough to the story
It was a fast read but it seemed as though it went by too fast. Not enough meat in the story...like it was written in a hurry. But that's just my opinion.

The story is good but it does seem a little "slow". Definitely not one of Maggie Shayne's better books. But it is a good story.
