5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Union Leaders, December 21, 2007
This review is from: The Legal Rights of Union Stewards (Plastic Comb)
This book should be the first thing any new union officer reads and as a long time union officer I read it at least once a year to refresh myself. As president of my local union I make sure all of our officers and stewarts have their own copy to read and refer back to as they have need to. "The Legal Rights of Union Stewarts", answers many questions and provides a knowledge base for more indepth learning.

I've been a steward for 2 years and heard of this book from a fellow steward. It has been very informative, helpful, and it is in a condensed format thereby making it user friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Management!, February 9, 2011
This review is from: The Legal Rights of Union Stewards (Plastic Comb)
This book should be on the mandatory reading list for all managers - it is helpful to learn the union steward's perspective and his / her reaction to poor management behavior. I worked on the "management" side of the bargaining table for many years. This book, given to me by a Local president, was one of the most informative books on the topic of union relations that I had read. Unlike many management books, which are packed with facts and defensive measures, this book taught me how to become a better manager in a union environment; something that was a benefit for the Union Stewards, the employees and my employer. Any union with a goal of improving the work environment of the employees should think about giving a copy of this to the supervisors with whom they come into contact with daily.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Private Sector Union Stewards, July 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Legal Rights of Union Stewards (Plastic Comb)
I purchased this along with another union related book and found this one to be more applicable to private sector unions, not public sector unions, of which I am involved in. So this book was not as helpful as the other book I bought. But I recommend it to all of the union officers and stewards in the private sector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home of the veiled threat, February 7, 2011
By

This review is from: The Legal Rights of Union Stewards (Plastic Comb)
Sometimes working in an organization there might be managers and supervisors who feel empowered to show their true "bully" colors toward employees and union representatives who stand up for themselves, or the membership. A common veiled threat often heard is "If you don't like it here, why don't you get another job?" WOW! Mr. Scwartz points out how this could "suggest that employment and union activity are incompatible."

This Fourth Edition is up-to-date and an excellent resource for all union members. The best thing all of us union members can do is educate ourselves, and each other so that together we acknowledge that "multiple pressures make it more likely that an employer will obey its legal obligations."

Learn about NLRB/NLRA, the special status of union stewards, and everything from rights to information to various labor laws which can help employees better understand their obligations in the workplace.

Great pocket reference that should be accessible and consulted whenever a situation comes up or we learn of an adverse employment action. It is a quick read and can be easily highlighted like a Bible.

I hope Robert M. Schwartz will come out with the Fifth Edition so I can get that revised version too for my personal/professional development library.

A brief and to the point read. The fairly large type and pages that measure about 7 ½ by 5 ½ inches means that even a slow and thoughtful reader can get through this book in a couple of hours.

Each page covers real life situations that you will or already have encountered. Even better, the information presented is back up with references to the specific cases that decided outcome of the question.

As of July 2010, Amazon is shipping the Fourth edition which is copyrighted 2006, but revised in June 2009. So the information is timely.

This book has been a great companion for me while serving the membership of 2 different Unions. I have found this to be a better one source option for information rather than the various different sources I used to have to gather to find information. All of the information is available online, at the hall, and in Union publications - this book just puts them all together nicely for you.

I think this is an excellent book for an individual who is new to the union and becoming a shop steward. I also enjoy the fact that the book is a very easy read and is effortless to comprehend.
This book gives you a step by step extensive approach of what to do, when and how to do it, where to seek information, and how to pull it all together.
I HIGHLY recommend The Legal Rights of Union Stewards, 4th edition by Robert M. Schwartz.
