3.0 out of 5 stars The movie was better...
I saw the movie, Legally Blonde before I read the book and I think that the movie was better and a lot funnier. The book is kind of boring, and I dont know if its because I already know the story or not. Dont buy it, check it out from your local library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elle Woods rocks!, March 14, 2002
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Paperback)
Nobody in the world could have dreamed that Elle Woods would be going to Stanford Law School. Come on! She's Miss June on the school calendar, homecoming queen, and big glamor girl Barbie. However when her long time boyfriend Warner breaks up with her because he needs a girlfriend that is more "serious" and can help him become president Elle decides she is going to prove herself very serious and follows Warner to law school. However from the first day Elle can tell Law School isn't really the place for a blonde. Plus she finds out that this totally unstylish, super serious looking Sarah is now engaged to Warner. However when things finally settle down Elle begins to find that law school isn't so bad. When she takes on the job as summer intern for Christoper Miles she finds that she is beginning to forget Warner. Now her new focus in life is this case about 23 year old Brooke Vandemark who is accused of murdering her 73 year old husband Heyworth Vandemark. It seems the only witness of the crime is Heyworth's 24 year old daughter Chutney. In the end Elle comes through with a trick any Cosmo girl would know to solve the case!

I absoulety love this book!! Even though I aint blonde it was still very funny for me! I have seen the movie too and I just have to say I love them both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read, February 12, 2002

Elle Woods is devastated when her boyfriend Warner Huntington III breaks up with her, instead of proposing (like she had thought). Now Elle is on a mission to become a wholesome girl like Warner wants. Which is why she's on her way to Stanford Law School. It's now up to her to break Warner and his new fiance up, and claim the man she came for. But while at Law School she realizes she likes it very much, and even starts the BLDF (Blonde Legal Defense Fund).

I recommend this book to all fans of the movie "Legally Blonde". While the book isn't exactly the same as the movie, it does resemble it, and is just as hilarious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but the movie is better, August 14, 2003

This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the rare cases where the movie is better than the book. The author states that the book is based on her experiences at Stanford law, but as a recent law school grad, I find the book unbelievable at some points. For example, Elle takes all of her classes pass/fail. As far as I know, the American Bar Association doesn't allow first year classes to be taken pass/fail. And as helpful as outlines are, they are no substitute for class attendance (which is required in law school, or you fail automatically) and studying!
The movie portrays Elle as a smart girl who works hard to get what she wants, the book portrays her as more of a spoiled brat who gets lucky.... I much prefer the former! Movie Elle wants to help everyone, book Elle only wants to help herself and other blondes.
If you have seen the movie, you don't need to read the book, the movie is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Blondes and Blondes-at-Heart, February 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
A fun-loving, bubbly sorority president/homecoming queen is dumped by her boyfriend for someone more serious. She follows him to Stanford Law School, determined to win him back and show him that she can be serious. In the process, she learns about herself and shows others that just because she is blonde and beautiful, she is still intelligent in her own way.

Anyone who is a fan of the movie should read this book. Even though it is different from the movie, it is excellent and hilarious in its own way.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!, January 11, 2004
By
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
Elle Woods, California University senior, has it all. She's homecoming queen, Miss June, popular, wears the latest trends, and has a hot boyfriend whom she's planning to marry, Warner. But when Warner unexpectedly dumps her, claiming he needs a more "serious" woman to accompany him to law school, Elle doesn't just sit around and mope. She takes the LSAT to get into Stanford Law School (where Warner was going), and easily passed. Determined to get Warner back, Elle's hopes are basically ruined when she finds that Warner has a new girlfriend, Sarah, and they were engaged. Life at Stanford hadn't been going too well, either- Elle was considered the laughingstock of the whole school, and had a hard time making friends. Determined to graduate and to show Warner how serious she really was, Elle decided to stay at Stanford.

I found this book to be full of humor, cringe-worthy parts, and those "You-go-girl!" moments. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm not qualified to judge on it, but after reading the book, I will definitely see the movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving 'Legally', June 18, 2003
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
While not a carbon copy of the movie (it would be far less enjoyable if it was ), the book 'Legally Blonde' is just as fun as the film it spawned.

There are subtle differences to various aspects, such as Luke Wilson's character isn't in the novel at all. However, Elle is still just as likable, just as clever and just as sweet as her mirror image on the screen.

Amanda Brown's book has essentially the same story, and thus fans of the movie will probably like it. I personally loved it, from the 'trials and tribulations' of Elle's days in lawyer school, to the defeat of Chutney in the courtroom, Elle remains a charming heroine who speaks for blond discrimination, everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blonde Lawyer Joke?, August 11, 2001
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Paperback)
A blonde lawyer joke? I have heard many blonde jokes and many more lawyer jokes in my time, but this is the first blonde lawyer joke, and there needs to be one, that I have run across. Actually the book, as is the movie, is an on going joke. Extremely humorous and yet one of great premise. And there is even a wonderful moral to be had in all of this. Cousin Vinny meets Bridget Jones? This story offers us love lost and love gained. Revenge and reward. Wonderful characters and clever and smart dialogue. I believe the movie was adapted from Amanda's first novel and she did a great job with the book. Elle Wood, the story's Fashion Merchandising sorority girl seemingly airhead heroine, worms her way into Harvard Law School for no other reason but to win back the love of her life. See the movie, read the book, but don't leave Amanda Brown's Legally Blonde off of your summer things to do list. General George Washington was once quoted as saying, 'When we assumed the Soldier, we did not lay aside the Citizen." Elle would modify that statement to read, "When we assumed the Blonde, we did not lay aside the Airhead." Actually that is a line from my next book but it seemed to fit here, so I used it, and you read it here first. Get ready to laugh because...here comes, Elle!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its fun to read, has a nice ending, and makes me feel good, August 30, 2004
This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
I had seen part of the movie LEGALLY BLONDE, but not enough to compare it to the book. So I am going with the book, and plan to see the movie again some time. Part of what attracted me to the book was the Chihuahuah on the cover -- I am the Original Dog Lover.

I did not read this book "critically." I read it for fun, entertainment and escape and enjoyed it on all three counts. Elle, the main character, for all of her stylish blondeness, is actually easy to identify with. Even with drop-dead good looks, money and sense of style, she has to deal with the breakup with her boyfriend (no amount of money can make that stop hurting) and challenges in law school, complicated by the fact that since she is attractive, blonde and a former Homecoming Queen, she has people questioning her seriousness and intelligence.

The plot is good and kept me turning pages, even though I had seen the end of the movie and knew how it would turn out. The "heavy" in the book -- Elle's former boyfriend, Warner -- gets his comeuppance and in all, it's a satisfying book to read.

It also pointed out something a lot of people don't realize: just because a girl is interested in styles, clothing and shopping, it doesn't mean that she's an airhead.

I suppose Amanda Brown has a style of writing that could be classed as "better than some and weaker than others." For my part,I think she painted up a real and genuine personality with Elle. There may have been some weaknesses in the book, but to be honest, I wasn't looking for them. I am neither a law student nor a lawyer, but I do have a busy and scattered-out schedule and sometimes I want to read something that is funny and relaxing.

Read the book! You'll enjoy it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Since when do Mary-Sue's get published?, January 26, 2003

This review is from: Legally Blonde (Mass Market Paperback)
When i get a book, i don't expect it to mirror bad fanfiction. But this one did--Legally Blonde is a total and complete Mary Sue.
For those of you who don't know, a Mary Sue is a character, generally found in fanfiction, who is practically perfect in every way. They're attractive, smart, and can usually sing and dance. They are the hero or heroine of the story, and overcome big problems.
Elle Woods is definately a Mary Sue. Everyone ended up loving her, all the guys wanted to date her, she passed everything easily and she was obviously above everyone else in the book. Not to mention when the Sarah character copied her style in the end.
I saw the movie of Legally Blonde and i really liked it, so i had high hopes for the book as well. But no, the character was a shallow, boy-crazed ditz and this book was completely unbelievable. See the movie instead.
