New Adult Fiction by Rainbow Rowell

Book Description

Business professional Mia Lombard is faced with the ultimate test: marry her boss to save his employees’ jobs or risk losing her own job and much loved home. Max Dylan isn’t exactly Frankenstein and when he discovers his UK work permit has expired, the wealthy American financier could call on any number of models or starlets to marry him so he can stay in the country. Knowing that a marriage to a greedy social climber could bleed him dry, he agrees to his colleague’s suggestion to get married for appearances only.
Mia and Max invent a convincing cover story for their supposed secret romance and sudden marriage. Initially, Mia has no difficulty with the pretence as she’s had a crush on Max for years but after discovering they have to stay hitched for three years, she wonders if she can commit that much of her life. It would mean shelving any chance of meeting someone else and postponing her plans to have a family.
Then the unexpected happens. Max, who’s always kept his work relationships professional, seems to fancy her.
Can Mia commit to three years, living with Max on a platonic basis? Or is she brave enough to jump in and enjoy a ‘no strings’ sizzling fling with while she can?

5.0 out of 5 stars I want to own this in paperback May 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I had this book on my wishlist and to be read list for a long time, and when I won a voucher from the author on a chicklit blog, I was ecstatic. Of course it took me a long time to actually get around to reading it, but once I got started, I didn't want to stop. I even delayed dinner by at least 90 minutes to make sure I finished the book before going to eat.

Now if you're looking for a serious book or one which gets every single technical nuance correct, then skip over this one. If you're looking for something flirty, fun, hot, and a wonderful escape, then this book is definitely for you. Having said that, I really enjoyed the book, if you can't already tell. I think the chemistry between Mia and Max was off the charts and I loved them. I think this is a wonderful debut book. I hope to own a copy of this in paperback and can't wait to see what the author's next work is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A completely charming book May 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book for free, which meant that I ran the usual risk that comes with a free book: you get what you pay for. This book, however, was just delightful. The characters felt like real people, instead of plastic figures being forced into some romantic formula. I was charmed and thoroughly enjoyed reading. As an added bonus, the book didn't have any of the grammar and typographical errors that too often litter Kindle freebies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Liked it, but too much telling, not enough showing. August 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well, I liked the premise of the story, liked the characters, even liked the storyline. It was an enjoyable read on average, and I wanted to like it more, except I found myself skimming often once I passed around the 25% mark. My main problem was the author "telling not showing." I don't want to hear about their interactions, I want to read them and have feelings and perceptions about them myself. I don't want to hear about what they talked about and did, I want to read their dialogue and actions alongside it. When these moments happened, I liked them; unfortunately there just weren't enough of them. I genuinely liked the two MCs (and even the secondary characters) but my connection with their story was stifled by the fact that I was being told about things instead of seeing/reading them for myself. Yes, there was dialogue, but it just felt too sparse. I also felt like the author should have included their wedding vows, since it seemed at the moment to be a really important part of their interaction (an example of telling us about it but not actually showing it).

I also felt bogged down by too many descriptions of their daily dry life dealings or descriptions. This is where my skimming came into play. But perhaps these scenes wouldn't have felt monotonous or dry had it not been for the sparse dialogue (which improved only toward the end). Now with the improved dialogue toward the end, I was finally enjoying more of their conversations, but then the story ended. I could have used an epilogue, not because the ending was necessarily bad. I liked how things ended. I would have liked an epilogue just to make up for the lack earlier in the book, because I was finally feeling like the "showing" of the story was coming together. But the story itself had a lot of potential, so with a little work and editing, I can see the author's future books being better and more enjoyable.

*Note: I got this as a Kindle freebie on Amazon*

4.0 out of 5 stars Great characters and nicely done story June 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I realize the premise has been done before, but also think the author did a good job of it. A couple of readers panned the love scenes but I felt they were well done, sexy and sensuous, which romance writers often make into painfully literal marathons. I enjoyed the various characters, noted some miscues in Max's English, such as referring to his mom as mum, but that's a bit petty. I feel, for a first novel that it's well done, could've used a bit of tightening up, but kept me interested all through, and the characters family relationships added depth. I'll definitely watch out for Ms. o' Neill's next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved This Sweet, Loving Romance June 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is what I call a gentle book. It was an easy read that I simply could not put down and stayed up half the night to finish. I have been reading some pretty heavy books lately and this was a marvelous change. Some word descriptions of this book from my perspective: Sweet, Loving, Romantic, Altruistic, Passionate, Family, Caring. I just loved it, what else can I say?

I read 300+ books a year and I very seldom, if ever, reread one, but this will be one of the three or four I will reread during next summer's respite.

Legally Wed was very well written and it held my attention throughout. I highly recommend this book.
