Great soundtrack, but if you want the full version...,

This "Legend of 1900" Soundtrack isn't the version with the entire soundtrack on it. Some of the best pieces weren't included in this non-Italian version, which has 29 songs. It's missing (among others) "Magic Waltz" (the song he plays for his seasick friend with the waves crashing outside) and "Enduring Movement" (the piece that won the contest with Jelly Roll Morton).
Go to intermezzomedia.com. Once there, you'll have to search by Composer for "Morricone", and scan through the many pages of his until you get to "La Leggenda del Pianista sull'Oceano". The company is from Italy but the site has English (as well as their confirmation emails). If you decide to buy it, the e-commerce bank they use for purchases is all in Italian, so I'd suggest going to freetranslation.com - that site does a decent job of translating the Italian phrases you enter into English. I bought from Intermezzomedia and didn't have any problems, got the CD just a few days later (using FedEx, which was a bit expensive but nice to have the tracking capabilities). The Italian version is awesome. I would NOT recommend buying the U.S. version...sorry Amazon but you really should also sell the Italian one.

This CD has most of the good solo piano songs from the movie on it. Unfortunately, it is missing some great ones. These include: Tarantella in 3rd Class, Enduring Movement (the song that wins the contest), Magic Waltz, and Portraits (when he makes up themes for individuals to his friend). The import version from Italy does contain these songs, but it is very hard to find. Also, it's almost twice as much when you do find it. So, if you're looking for all the solos, and are willing to pay more for it, look around on the net and you'll find it...

This soundtrack is absolutely incredible! However, I just wanted to put a word in about the Italian version. I found the 29-track version while I was in Italy this past summer. I was ecstatic! I bought it and listened to it every chance I could get. It is well worth the amount on the site refrenced to in another review. I highly recommend making the purchase. You'll be glad you did!

North American Sony CD chopped by more than 20 minutes!,

I was extremely disappointed with this Sony production which I purchased in Montreal, Quebec a month ago (September 1999). Morricone's impressive score to Giuseppe Tornatore's most recent film was released more than a year ago in Italy, also on the Sony label. Can anyone explain why the North American edition should have been butchered by the loss of more than 20 minutes of music? There are often good reasons to edit foreign language films to make them more 'attractive' to a North American audience, but surely this should not be applied to the film's soundtrack?

I saw the movie "The Legend of 1900" after reading a review of it. It seemed like an interesting idea. The movie was pretty good. The music in the movie was outstanding. I wish I could get the complete musical score, but this CD has a good amount of the music from the movie. I enjoy piano music and this has an assortment of classically influenced music, as well as some early jazz type numbers. I recommend seeing the movie and I heartily recommend this soundtrack.

The changes made for the American version of this soundtrack have been detailed in other reviews, so I won't repeat them. However, it is worth noting that "Lost Boys Calling" was rerecorded for the American version. Eddie Vedder does not appear on the original Italian version, and the vocals are less melodramatic (both good things, at least where this song is concerned). It's a great song, but ruined in the domestic release. Import it!

Be a connoisseur, get the original Italian version "La Leggenda del pianista sull'oceano" by Sony Classical, code SK 60790, 1CD, 29 tracks, length 78' 3" which includes the complete musical score. It's unforgivable not to include "Magic Waltz" (the famous piano ride sequence) and "Enduring Movement" (the contest winning sequence)plus of course the "5 Portraits" in this US version. Otherwise, this magical soundtrack is so mesmerising that you will want to listen to all day long and impossible to get it out of your head. Enjoy.

This is an excellent piece of art!!! Great for all sensitive people who like the type of music. However, it's adviseable to watch the film at first; the soundtrack is very specific and you should buy it only when you liked it in the film as well as when you found interesting the motion itself!!!

Once again Ennio Morricone gives us an incredible masterpiece. Every song can touch your heart in a different way. Every minute is inspired and when I had the pleasure to listen to this beautiful soundtrack I was amazed. It is a must buy soundtrack.

Unfortunatelly, Well, when someone search for a soundtrack CD he(she) expects to find the original music from the movie. Although Morricone work is great, the TOP of that movie is the music of Scott Joplin, Ragtime, etc IN WHICH the film is based... It would be a great idea to launch a complete edition of this Soundtrack with ALL music, including trumpet music, some piano music left out, etc, we need take 2. Perhaps a good idea would be buying CDs of James P. Johnson and Scott Joplin also.
