5.0 out of 5 stars Great casual view of the "boys"
The video footage of the band's early years really helps Moody fans understand what the band is about. They perform their songs as passionately as they did when they were written. I especially liked the footage of "I'm Just a Singer..." The look on Justin's face as he plays his guitar near the end shows just how intense his music is to him. The film also...

I'm glad to have this disc as a replacement for the VHS tape. However, the overall quality of the picture, while an improvement over VHS, isn't up to typical DVD standards. I'm not talking about the archival footage here, which is naturally of variable quality, but I expected better from the more recent videos and interviews. In particular, the video for The Other Side...

The film also shows Graeme's great sense of humor. I've been a Moody's lover for years and this film pulled a lot of loose ends together.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile, Good Documentary Of A Legendary Band, December 25, 2003
This review is from: Legend of a Band - The Story of the Moody Blues (DVD)
I already have the DVD of the 1992 concert "A Night At Red Rocks", which I'd gotten last year, so when I found this documentary DVD I offered it to "Santa" for a Christmas present this year. Having watched this program in full the first time through, I really like "Legend Of A Band"--it's very informative and it's not as skimpy as some other music documentaries I've seen/heard. A slightly negative attribute, though, would be that the program is a bit dated (having been compiled and produced in 1990); yet, this documentary, audio/video quality-wise, is good enough for DVD. Nevertheless, the 80-minute-long program is the disc's only content; there's no extra footage or material, which could've made the program even more interesting.
I like the intimate individual interview pieces with the core of the band (Justin, Ray, Graeme, John), between the full-length song videos and rare concert material, but the interview footage excludes founding member Mike Pinder and the band's (then) keyboardist Patrick Moraz; furthermore, I think it would've been neat if some of the interview footage would've been of the four guys together, which would've provided career comments and personal feelings and song explanations in a collective perspective. Still, this is an excellent documentary, which offers some songs I'd never heard before. Overall, the quality of this DVD is what other music documentaries should be but often are not, allowing me to further appreciate the "Red Rocks" DVD. If you're a die-hard Moody Blues fan, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with this program.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Moody Blues Anthology, December 18, 2001
This review is from: Legend of a Band - The Story of the Moody Blues (DVD)
At long last available on DVD, "Legend of a Band" is the closest the Moody Blues will get to the documentary treatment that the Beatles received in their Anthology. Although it's already dated eleven years, evidenced by the inclusion of Patrick Moraz as a band member (who left the group in '89/'90), it is a great repository of high-quality vintage performances, home movie footage, and 1990 interviews with the four band members. Also, this is the only place to find the MTV-style music videos for "Your Wildest Dreams," "I Know You're Out There Somewhere," "No More Lies," and the 1989-remake of "Question." This is the closest that the band will come, I believe, to releasing a music video anthology as well as a documentary. A nice companion piece to the Royal Albert Hall live DVD...now let's just hope this means that the classic and essential "A Night at Red Rocks" concert will find its way onto the digital format.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality time with a quality band, October 25, 1999
"Legend of a Band" is an entertaining family video about one of Rock's truly great groups. It possesses solid concert footage as well as intimate conversations with each of the performers. The music is wonderful and members' insight into the process of creating it makes this a worthy effort. Unlike many of today's attitudinal "in your face" groups, my impression of the Moody Blues is that they are four really nice guys who just happen to make great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interviews, performances and music videos!, November 20, 1999

A wonderful history of one of England's greatest and most enduring bands. Contains interviews with all four band members. It also has great concert footage and many of the band's music videos including Your Wildest Dreams which won the Billboard Video of the Year award. A must for anyone who has ever enjoyed the Moody Blue's music.

Moody Blues fans this a must have for your collection especially since Ray Thomas is no longer with the band because he was one of the original founding members. The guys get a chance to talk about how the band originally all came about, what the music means to them and how they feel about each other. There is a hilarious scene in the beginning with Graeme getting his beard dyed brown and a wonderful accoustic solo of Tuesday Afternoon.

Also nowhere else will you be able to find the videos that were actually shown on MTV."I know your out there somewhere", "In your wildest dreams", "No more lies", "The other side of life",(my all time favorite) and more. I'll not give away all the surprises you must buy this for yourself to see and hear all the interviews, film clips, videos and rare concert footage. I first saw this on public television many many years ago and it inspired me to send them money.

This would make a great gift for yourself or a friend. I have both the VHS and DVD and the quality is possibly better on the VHS but either way you can't lose with this little gem. Truely wonderful!!

I'm not talking about the archival footage here, which is naturally of variable quality, but I expected better from the more recent videos and interviews. In particular, the video for The Other Side of Life lacks detail and the color is washed out. The VHS version looks better.

My guess is that this was mastered in a hurry using as its source one of the duplicating masters used in production of the VHS version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still worth a look, December 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Legend of a Band - The Story of the Moody Blues (DVD)
I was very eager to see this documentary, and it did not disappoint. Despite it being filmed in 1991, it is still worth seeing because by that stage the the Moody Blues had achieved over 30 years of success. The documentary features a mix of interviews and videos. It was fascinating listening to Justin Hayward describe the early days and how songs were created. He even performs an acoustic version of "Tuesday afternoon". The DVD contains about 10 videos in their entirety, including the original videos of "Nights in white satin", and "I'm just a singer". The remaining videos are from the later years except for the remix of "Question". I am pleased to have all of these videos now im my library, but would have liked to see more videos from the early days, or even early concert footage. Perhaps some footage from the famous Isle of Whyte concert in 1970.

Overall, this is an effective documentary containing footage that any fan of this incredible band will want it in their collection. it's also a good way to get 10 of their videos in their entirety too.
