Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Houston Post sportswriter Hers-kowitz met Bryant in 1954 the coach's first year leading the Texas A & M teamand was his friend for the next 29 years. PW's call: "The book is more about the man and his leadership qualities than the games his teams won."

From Library Journal

As a sportswriter Herskowitz developed a close association with Bryant and openly acknowledges his admiration for the legendary football coach. He considers the "Bear" to have been an expert in the people business, from picking players and coaches to jousting with journalists. The author devotes a complete chapter to the charge that Bryant helped fix a 1962 game, but unlike James Kirby in his book Fumble ( LJ 9/1/86), believes him to be innocent of any wrongdoing. Bryant's vices are not ignored (drinking and gambling among them); however, this is less a penetrating biography than a career highlights commentary. William H. Hoffman, Ft. Myers-Lee Cty. P.L., Fla.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, May 25, 1999

This review is from: Legend of Bear Bryant (Paperback)
This is excellent reading about one of the most famous men ever to walk the sidelines. Mickey Herskowitz provides great insight to Bear Bryant as a coach and a person. I really enjoyed this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bryant is interesting but this book should have a different, June 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Legend of Bear Bryant (Paperback)
This book is a really good account of Bear Bryant but i could not get past the ego of Mickey Herskowitz. Clearly he tries to use Bear Bryant's life story to propell his name into the spotlight. Who cares if he was on hand for all of these incredible events? He should consider himself lucky that he even knew the man. Mickey Herskowitz, if you are listening to me, I will debate my disgust with you personally. Establish communication with me by e mail at wl43742@swt.edu. I won't expect a reply.
