5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book available, February 7, 2012

This review is from: Legend of Bohemian Glass: A Thousand Years of Glassmaking in the hearth of E (Hardcover)
The book explains how this region's resources provided the materials needed for world class glass making. Due to different ingredients from those used by the Venicians, the result was a completely different set of styles.

The commentary is detailed and very engrossing. Many examples are shown in full page color, which on this oversized book really lets you admire the workmanship. Historical (antique/collector,s items) are shown and described up to page 100. From that point, modern and 20th century styles take over. One of the most valuable sections to me was the Encyclopedic Glossary (pages 259-279) where terms and techniques are explained in detail. I've never come across anything like this. Pages 280-285 show the logos of glassworks, finishing studios, and schools up to 1940 (WWII and the Communists followed).

What to do if this book is too expensive (currently $123-40) or you are willing to be satisfied with a few pages of excellent pictures and some commentary within a diversified book. Here's two that I own and recommend: Collecting Glass by Sarah Yates and Starting to Collect Antique Glass by John Sandon.

If you like the spectacular art designs (1800-1835) of Mohn or Kothgasser, read my review of Mohn & Kothgasser: Transparent bemaltes Biedermeierglas - Transparent-Enamelled Biedermeier Glass
