5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent storyline and action-packed
I happen to be a big fan of the Final Fantasy game series, and this is a perfect movie translation. The movie is based on FF5 (I've never played it, but it looks cool). I don't know how they managed to put a LONG game into a two hour movie, but they did, and they did very well. If you like Japanese Animation movies, or are a fan of the game series, this is a fantastic...

I found this series very humorous, though, but only because it was really cheaply done. I hate to sound like a critic or a Final Fantasy "purist", but the mangled plot, shallow characters, and the horrible music make this an unsuitable viewing for anyone who doesn't want to make fun of it.

Okay, this movie is a mix of action and comedy. If you like movies with foul language, lots of violence, blood, and gore then DO NOT buy this movie. I myself like movies that have this, but also like everything else. This movie is mainly like the end of the world theme until a bunch of people become chosen by destiny to save the world that they live in. The movie has a lot of jokes, but it is mainly action. The characters are also very cool ESPECIALLY some creatures. My favorites are Prettz and the commander of the "Ironwing"(the vehicle is very cool)! Please buy this movie! You'll like it! I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Any Final Fantasy Game Fan!!!, May 12, 2001

This review is from: Legend of the Crystals (Based on Final Fantasy) Complete Box Set: Volumes 1 & 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was laughing, cheering, and crying (from laughing so hard). I was very pleased that this story follows very closely to the game plots; it's that same style that flows though every Final Fantasy game, those favorite characters that you both became frustrated with and had fun with. This anime has it all: the summoning heroine, so pivitol to the success of the adventure; the easily tempered, yet laid back hero, secretely in love with our heroine; the bumbling brute in unrequited love; the enemy turned ally who's only looking out for number one; riddles, magic, and spooks; and reaching to another world to vanquish the foe and return peace to the entire earth. Oh, yeah! And featherless gold chocobos to save the day!

The only thing wrong I see with this series is that it's so short. But that may only seem that way to me because I'm used to 40-70 hour playing times! Even so, I'm very glad I got this set; it was well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its was Great, February 25, 2001
This review is from: Legend of the Crystals (Based on Final Fantasy) Complete Box Set: Volumes 1 & 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Final Fantasy OVA was a great series i think people get there money's worth. It shows a few scenes of the final fantasy V chars. and even is hilarious. i think it should be rated PG-13 though alot of leather and a statue with bells fr its chest. but other than that a great series with the voice Talents of Matt Miller-Tenchi Masaki- and 2 others from the tenchi series. very good worth buying

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Measure Up, June 10, 2000
This review is from: Legend of the Crystals (Based on Final Fantasy) Complete Box Set: Volumes 1 & 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Final Fantasy is one of those videos that you'd expect to be incredible, with a lot of action and CG enhanced battles, but after watching the movie for a second time, I'm beginning to realize just how dull this movie is. Cuteness and humor abound, and with a bad guy clearly meant for scaring anyone under age 7, this movie is hardly a classic. I'm not sure why they decided to make Pretz and Linaly look almost identical (but of different genders) but it really didn't show a lot of creative intellect on their part. You could probably say that for a real serious otaku, this video is a rip off, but for little kids who just want something to watch on a rainy day, this film is perfect. With no cussing, nudity, and almost no violence, parents should be relieved. I, however, thought I was being dperived and watching the super-cut version or something. The villians had basically no depth, and the characters just didn't have any obvious relationships to develop. I suppose this could have been better (and more acceptable) had it been done as a TV series, but as a two video anime, it stunk. They need to find a better way to depict a battle between good and evil besides glowing hairless ostriches flying at the enemy. I'm serious. That's how childish Final Fantasy is. I've heard all about the video game series, and according to my fellow gamers, its a work of art. They tell me the characters were creative, the plot was interesting, and the backgrounds were quite a thing to look at. This anime had none of those things, and it was obvious the animators couldn't care less that their backgrounds looked like they'd been done with Crayola markers. In short, Final Fanasy is lacking in cool battles and has WAY to much humor, no drama, and bland characters. Skip this one, its not worth your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Product That Does NOT Deserve "Final Fantasy" Name, December 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Legend of the Crystals (Based on Final Fantasy) Complete Box Set: Volumes 1 & 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First off, I was excited when I found out there was an anime based on my favorite RPG series of all time, Final Fantasy. Of course, before buying, I read reviews and everything, and found out that it was based on Final Fantasy V. I went ahead, and ordered it. When it finally came to my doorstep, I was excited, and I watched it that night, hoping to see top quality anime with a compelling storyline. As I started watching it, I became very, very doubtful that I ever made this purchase. It simply was not worth it. I realized that my money could have been spent on something worth the time and money. The major setback is probably the voice acting of the English cast. I found it very, very terrible, and they showed no emotions, even at the parts where emotion should have been in place. It was as if the voice actors were robots, or really dull human beings.

Another thing that I disliked about this anime, was the fact that the color was not sharp as it is supposed to be. This says something about the animators of this Final Fantasy anime. Also, there wasn't much action or a story as well to this 4 episode OVA set. I found the first tape to be the most dull, but it picks up in the second tape, thankfully. As you may know, Final Fantasy is known for it's excellent gameplay, storyline, and action in it. This anime totally is the opposite of what we know as a Final Fantasy product. This doesn't even follow much around Final Fantasy V, and just wanders off in its own story, which isn't even that exciting. This was definitely a terrible buy, and a waste of time watching. I believe this product does not deserve to have the "Final Fantasy" title in it. I haven't seen the Japanese version of this, but hopefully, they have better voice acting to show some kind of emotion and drama. If you want to pick up this anime, try picking up the subtitled editions of these tapes. The English dub is just dull, and makes the viewer very disinterested within the first 15 minutes. I don't recommend this if you are a hardcore anime fan, or Final Fantasy fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, December 10, 2006

I feel it is only fair to preface this by saying that I paid very little for this (less than shipping will cost you on amazon) and that probably shifted my expectations. This video set has four 30 minute episodes that tell a story set in the world of the nintendo game with the same name.

In many ways this was surprisingly good (remember I had low expectations). There was plenty of comic relief. The plotline is not so similar to that of the game. The setting is similar, so you see places from the game drawn out in cartoon form. Some of the details there were nice. The best part of the video is seeing the setting from the video games drawn out and little details added that had inside jokes.

Many aspects of this were over the top to the point where it feels more like a parody of anime than an actual show. The main character Linally wears a man shirt (and not particularly big) with no pants. There are plenty of panty shots, including magically glowing butt cheeks that have something to do with the wind crystal's power. It's not so graphically drawn and she looks like she's about 10. I'm not sure if that makes it more or less disturbing.

Overall there is a nice mix of stuff that isn't fighting going on and fight scenes. The entire last thirty minute episode is basically one big fight scene. Every once in a while I'd be like, oh did they finish yet, and then reallize that they hadn't. The highlight of this was that there was a longish sequence with totally inappropriate music. The music was happy and jazzish and would better accompany something having to do with a chokobo than with a going to the moon to fight the death god scene.

Since I had no expectations, I kind of liked these. I wouldn't watch them again. If you are going to get this, then make sure to check the prices for buying the two videos separately. Right now together they are around 90 dollars, but getting both separately would cost about 1 dollar.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Legend of the Crystals (Based on Final Fantasy) Complete Box Set: Volumes 1 & 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is so good. It is cool but weird. The best part is the blinking ... scene. The weird thing is the ghost of a boy dead for 200 years is thrown in. If your looking in the anime section of hollywood and can't decide what to rent, rent this one.

This Movie is prety good! Unlike other people say it is not final fantasy 5 it does not follow the story line of ff5 It takes place after words. As some people say the movie has some vocies from thenchi muyo pretiz ( the main charecter) Is tenchis vocie, And Linaly (the 2nd Main charecter) is sesamie. I was over all plesed. I am to my apinyin 1 of the greatest final fantrasy fans I have all the games exept tastics, for playstation legends 3, gameboy and 1 for nintendo (nes)
