I'm amazed at this book every time I freakin' read it. It's the first part of a series that changes. This story has a very mystical quality about it, even as it discusses the harsh realities of a Native American girl's unfortunate life as she grows into a woman. It's beautiful and heart-breaking.

Legend Days is a book by Jamake Highwater. The classification of this book is mystery.
Awana is a woman who is trying to find truth and peace. She deals with dreams and fears that bother her. And because of this she gets courage and becomes a fearless warrior. When honor comes to her she is stubborn to accept it.

This book is different from other books I have read in way that Awana doesnt accept gratitude and honor from others because she almost feels like its her dutie to be a warrior. In other books characters are always quick to receive honor because of pride. Awana is humble.

In history I have learned Indians have a belief in gods and believe that the gods accompanies them where ever they go. They have great faith and try to live their lives with honor. Awana had a specific belief in a god that delivered peace and happiness to her. On page 146-147 this quote is exclamated "I am your vision, I am the seed that grows. I am the cave of your heart and the drum that summons legends and dreams!" "Aoh" " Amana exclaimed, as she opened her arms to the night and began to run into the deep darkness that stretched beneath the vast bead work of the sky" This god is real to her which is evident. After she is told this she is overcomed with peace and opens her arms the the skies.
I have given praise to this book but the book may not be for everybody. The ways of the Indians and their life styles may not interest people and bore some but others it may fascinate. In my opinion this isn't a book of Indian mythology but rather a story of a woman who becomes in touch with her self as she meets peace with her gods.
