I got this book based on other reviews and the fact that I wanted an Easter book that focused on the true meaning, rather than the bunny. While its a cute, sweet book, I was disappointed in the story a little. Its about a boy who's sister falls ill and he goes to live with some family friends. Easter is coming and he wonders what the point of Easter Eggs are and he is told the story of the resurrection. He dyes eggs and prays and then goes home to his sister who is now well. It was a nice story, it just seemed like the author got bored and so ended it abruptly. Don't get me wrong--its a nice story but I just would have ended it with comparing the egg and Resurrection to new life and tied that in with his sister's new chance at life.

This is one of several Easter-themed books our family owns, and it is one we return to again and again no matter what time of year. It contains many of the various elements of Lent/Holy Week, and weaves them into a lovely children's story. The illustrations are outstanding, particularly the one of the angel outside the empty tomb on Easter morning. Currently we have the board book version (which is of course abbreviated) and like it so much that we want to buy the full-length version. I'm confused as to why a previous reviewer gave it only 3 stars but had no criticism of it. It's a 5-star book in my opinion and highly recommended.

Sweet Story,

I enjoyed this sweet story of a brother and sister separated by illness at Easter time. I wish more than a page or two had been devoted to the resurrection of Christ, considering this book was supposed to be about the parallels between the decorated Easter egg and the resurrection.
It is a nice story though and we'll read it year after year.

An Easter Legend,
By
This review is from: The Legend of the Easter Egg (Paperback)
"The Legend of the Easter Egg", by Lori Walburg, is a fiction story about the meaning and orgin of Easter Eggs. A legend is defined as "a story handed down through the years and connected with some real events, but probably not true in itself". This book was illustrated by James Bernardin and was published by Zondervan, a Christian publishing company.
The setting of the story appears to be a farm in the late 1800s. A young boy is sent away to stay with John and Mary Sonneman while his sister recovers from scarlet fever. The Sonnemans own a candy store so Thomas feels like he has died and gone to heaven. He helps John work in the store and on Good Friday he goes to church with the Sonnemans. Thomas listens to the story of Jesus's death. Mary Sonneman explains to Thomas that "just as a chick breaks out of an egg, so had Jesus broken free of the tomb of death. Easter eggs remind us that Jesus conquered death and gives us eternal life." On Easter morning, Thomas fills a basket full of colored eggs and walks home to see his sister. Lucy is recovering and Thomas is anxious to tell her about his faith in Jesus, his hope for new life and the Easter eggs. There is a page in the back of the book that explains the traditions and symbols of Lent and Easter. I think this is a wonderful book to share with children. Children will hear the story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and learn the meaning of new life through the symbolism of the Easter egg. Parents and teachers will want to share the entire Easter story with their children after reading this book. This is a great story to read at Easter or anytime of the year.

Brought me to tears,
By Briana King (Piqua, OH) - See all my reviews

I have three children who will soon be 1, 3, and 5 years old. It has always been very important to me to emphasize the true meaning of Christmas and Easter and downplay the secular traditions. It's easy to do with Christmas. The Nativity scene is as prominent as the Christmas tree, and we have a birthday cake for Jesus. However, because Easter deals with death and resurrection, I have found it much more difficult to explain to the kids, and much more difficult to emphasize the true meaning. I picked this book up at the library last week and just read it to them for naptime. I honestly had to choke back tears to get through it. The story is beautiful and poignant, and the pictures are wonderful. It really conveyed the true spirit of Easter in a way that little ones can understand. What an accomplishment! Bravo!

Great "Legend" to keep the reason for Easter in a childs mind,

This is a great book to keep children remembering the true reason for the Easter Holiday. My boys LOVE these books! They are beautiful. Someone had mentioned in a review that it was not fact, well no, it is not. But are most Legends? (Isn't that way it is called a legend?!) So if you are looking for a book to celebrate Easter and heartwarming, this is an amazing book!!

Endearing tale of Easter,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Legend of the Easter Egg (Hardcover)
In this historical fiction story about Easter, a young man learns the legend of the Easter egg and about his faith in Jesus. Thomas asks his sister about the legend of the Easter egg while they do their chores. Unfortunately she doesn't get a chance to answer him before she gets Scarlet Fever. While staying with friends, he asks about Easter eggs. Thomas finds his answer and prays for the first time. This endearing story is a great way to explain some of the symbols used to celebrate Easter to young children. A great book to add to the other collectable legend stories like The Legend of the Candy Cane. |
