Book Description

June 1, 2002 10 and up4 and upGreat Episodes
Twelve-year-old Jimmy Spoon yearns for a life of adventure. So when two Shoshoni boys offer him a horse, Jimmy sneaks away from his family in Salt Lake City to follow the boys. When Jimmy arrives at the Shoshoni camp, he discovers that he is expected to stay--as a member of the tribe!
Inspired by the memoirs of a white man who actually lived with Chief Washakie's tribe as a boy in the mid-1800s, The Legend of Jimmy Spoon is a compelling coming-of-age adventure.

More About the Author

Kristiana Gregory grew up in Manhattan Beach, California, two blocks from the ocean. She's always loved to make up stories [ask her family!], telling her younger siblings whoppers that would leave them wide-eyed and shivering. Her first rejection letter at age ten was for a poem she wrote in class when she was supposed to be doing a math assignment. She's had a myriad of odd jobs: telephone operator, lifeguard, camp counselor, reporter, book reviewer & columnist for the LA Times, and finally author.

"Jenny of the Tetons" [Harcourt] won the Golden Kite Award in 1989 and was the first of two-dozen historical novels for middle grade readers. Several of Kristiana's titles are now available on Kindle including, "Stalked," a YA thriller set in NYC tenements in 1912; and "Curiously Odd Stories: Vol. 1" with the celebrated 'Paper Monument', a futuristic book-banning with horrific consequences.

"My Darlin' Clementine" [Holiday House] takes place in an Idaho mining camp of 1866, based on the song of that name, and was Idaho's top pick for the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. "Bronte's Book Club" [HH] is set in a town by the sea and is inspired by the girls' book club Kristiana led for several years.

Her most recent title with Scholastic's Dear America series is "Cannons At Dawn," a sequel to the best-selling "The Winter of Red Snow," which was made into a movie for the HBO Family Channel.

Kristiana and her husband have two adult sons, and live in Idaho with their two golden retrievers. In her spare time she loves to swim, walk, read, and hang out with friends. She's trying to learn to knit, but isn't yet having much success.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mormon boy gives a good insight into the lives Shoshoni, February 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Legend of Jimmy Spoon (Turtleback)
This story is based on the life of Elijah Nicholas ("Nick") Wilson, for whom Wilson, Wyoming, is named. Unlike the review from HORN BOOK, I didn't think this book needed a map; a "regular" modern map of Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and Montana works well.

The plot does meander--but so did Wilson's life! If you are looking for a book about a child unsure of his place in the world, this is certainly a good one. Jimmy doesn't know if he wants to live with the white men or the Indians. (Read or see LITTLE BIG MAN for a humorous take on exactly the same theme but a different Indian Nation.)

The story is not sugar-coated. Bad things do happen (scaplpings, buffalo killing, etc.) and the author tells the tale realisticly. I have travelled greatly in this area and found that it brought back very fond memories--and a strong desire to summer in Wyoming and Idaho again!

Also good reading are JIMMY SPOON AND THE PONY EXPRESS and JENNY, A GIRL OF THE TETONS by the same author. The former is based on Wilson's further adventures and the latter is based on the life of the namesake of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Legend of Jimmy Spoon, March 7, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Legend of Jimmy Spoon (Paperback)
Legend of Jimmy Spoon

"Jimmy where are you?" in the beginning of this book, a boy named Jimmy who likes to ride horses doesn't get a horse on his birthday. Instead his dad asks him to work in his store. Jimmy gets mad but still works with his dad. He makes his own club with himself. Then two Indians ask him to go with them to their village. When he gets there at about 2 days later, he finds out that he is now the son of the chief's mother. Then for several years he travels with the Indian tribe through many adventures.

What I thought about the book was that it was a very good book because of the adventure. I would recommend this book to a person who likes adventure books. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!

My 12 year old daughter loves Jimmy Spoon! She has read it at least 10 times and would also recommend the second book called "Jimmy Spoon and the Pony Express".
