Book Description

This is a humorous and satirical view of academic life in the U.S. during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. It tells the story of El Muy Lorenzo, an individual who is a bit different from other academics and who consequently encounters considerable difficulties fitting into academic life and life in general. The story, which has a structure similar to magical realism, begins with Lorenzo’s first appearance, his sexual pre-occupations, and his apparent paranoia about the faithfulness of his wife. It then discusses his various romantic entanglements and the situation he finds himself in his academic setting. The humorous and satirical overview of his academic department and its cast of characters, and the academic ambience in the U.S. during the 1970s, 80s and 90s, provides an interesting perspective on academic life, and life in many work settings, that is not often discussed.

The story is largely told by a third person narrator and moves along quickly. It thus differs from some of the earlier academic satires that were written by literature faculty which were somewhat encumbered by tedious dialogue, modernist complexity, and literary showmanship. The relative simplicity of language and lack of complex dialogue make this a relatively easy read. Although the Lorenzo character is biting in his analysis and denunciation of some of his colleagues, he is also quite self-deprecating and obviously more than a bit paranoid.

From another perspective the story has some parallels to the story of Christ, and Lorenzo can be seen as a modern-day version of the Saviour who is persecuted because he is different and because his message (the spread of ZNA) threatens the established social order.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfunny satire December 1, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The best satire of academia is in the novels of David Lodge. This book is a pathetic attempt which is funny for about five pages and then drags. Muy crappo!

More About the Author

El Muy Lorenzo is a former American academic. He was born and grew up on the East Coast and attended university in the Bay Area. He taught there and in the Mid-West for most of his career. He is a distinguished scholar and has published widely in the scientific literature. LIFE IN ACADEMIA, The El Muy Lorenzo Stories is Lorenzo's humorous satire of academic life and its cast of self-important characters. It shows how a group-culture, whether academic or in another workplace, frequently discriminates against anyone who is different and persecutes them, as Christ was persecuted, for implicitly challenging established social norms. It is also a treatise on paranoia that asks whether paranoia in one area of a person's life necessarily clouds that person's understanding of all aspects of social reality.

"The Legend..." is the major work in this series. " A Brief Guide to El Muy Lorenzo" is a very short explanation of that more complex work. "The Legend Quiz" affords the reader an opportunity to test their knowledge of "The Legend..." book and offers humorous insights into the mind and teaching methods of El Muy Lorenzo.
