A unique way of telling a story.,
By
This review is from: Legend of Lobo [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ernest Thompson Seton's story has been brought to the screen in a remarkable and unique way. There is no dialogue in the whole movie. The story is told through narration by Rex Allen (who had the perfect voice for this sort of thing) and music performed by the Sons of the Pioneers. (The title song, which reappears throughout the film, was written by the Sherman Brothers.) Oliver Wallace provides a nice music score and the outdoor photography by Jack Couffer and Lloyd Beebe is beautiful. All of these elements combine to form a very entertaining film. May the legend live on.

From the day I saw it as a six year old, Lobo was my all time favorite film. I would rent it from the video store every chance I got and only recently purchased it for myself as a 21 year old.
As an animal lover, Lobo let my imagination soar to a whole new world of mountains, cowboys, and adventure. From the moment I saw the movie, the amazing wolf has been my favorite and most respected animal. The fun and emotional story of Lobo will never get old. I recommend this to all ages. Watch it for what it is, no comparisons, no modern day standards, just sit back and enjoy it. -Seven

I loved that movie. If you love wolves, or animals you'll love this. It has its really touching parts, and teaches a lot about wolves. Unlike normal shows that'll teach to you about animals, this one does it in an entertaining way by teaching it in a story, talking about Lobo's life and all the challenges he has to go through, as a lot of wolves, probably, do to. Also it shows just how truly evil humans are to animals....and...well all I can think to type about it. I give it 4 stars.

Great music and super movie,
This review is from: The Legend of Lobo (DVD)
the Legend of Lobo is loosely based on Ernest Thompson Seton's story ' Lobo King of Currumpaw' but with a much happier ending. I saw this flick as a very young child, and I cried after the movie was over for the death of Lobo's parents even though these deaths took place early in the movie. But the heroics and loyalty of the Lobo and his pack stuck with me for many years and it is one of my favorite childhood movies.
these days, the wolves would talk and there would probably be no deaths at all, which I think does a disservice to the dignity of animals: they do NOT talk and they do sometimes die tragic deaths. Lobo's young life is Disney-fied, with cute scenes with other animals which makes it easier to get over the loss of the parent wolves. the story itself and the animals' training is very intriguing. A very interesting film -- bounty hunting for particular animal, ranchers concerned with wolf population, and wolf pack loyalty. The music/lyrics are hauntingly beautiful.

"The Adventures of Lobo" is my favorite Disney movie about wolves. Rex Allen and the Sons of the pioneers do an excellent job of providing the narration and the theme song for the movie. The DVD has excellent picture and sound quality, and the outdoor filming of this movie was excellent.

The Ups and Downs of Being a Wolf,

This review is from: The Legend of Lobo [VHS] (VHS Tape)
However good the cinematography, the storyline, or the narration, it is the song sung by the Sons of the Pioneers I remember best. Of course it has been too long for me to remember the words, but the song was sung in snatches throughout the movie and complemented Rex Allen's narration very nicely. I still have Ernest Thompson Seton's Wild Animals I have Known with stories of a crow, fox, mustang and rabbit among others. The first story is The King of Currumpaw and the basis of The Legend of Lobo. There is only one other movie I can recall showing the life of a wild animal and that was The Glacier Fox. The Legend of Lobo told a more complete story in that it began with the birth of Lobo and followed his puppyhood, maturing into a full grown wolf, selecting a mate, and raising a family. The life of a wolf was filled with danger from the ranchers so it is not all pleasant. But, regardless of how old the movie is, it is still a valuable aid to gaining knowledge of this wild canine.

Bitter-sweet,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Legend of Lobo [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie made me laugh and cry. I love the story of LOBO. This film will make you sing, dance, shout for joy, and of course, like all dog movies, cry. Bitter-sweet is defently the one and only way to describe LOBO and his adventures. This movie is good for only these ages listed:7 8 9 10 and up. LOBO is a great movie, but little kods would get bored or be sad at certain parts. LOBO + VCR = Bitter-sweet.

This movie was one I had never seen but rented on just it being a Rex Allen narrated Disney film. My family and I recently watched Charlie the Lonesome Cougar and it put me in a nostalgic mood for the Disney of my early youth. Although The Legend of Lobo was made in the early 60's, these films were all shown on the Wonderful World of Disney through the 70's.
The Legend of Lobo didn't disappoint in the humorous tone of voice that marked Rex Allen's best narrations. The wildlife photography was amazing and just as fresh today as it was nearly 5 decades ago. I think the only caution I would make to a family setting down to watch this is that there is animal cruelty in the form of spring loaded traps used to catch the father of Lobo. This caused my wife to leave the family room. The violence is not particularly graphic but it is suggested. Otherwise, this film was very enjoyable.

A Classic Disney Animal Story,
This review is from: The Legend of Lobo (DVD)
If you are a Disney fan, you are probably familiar with their old animal tales, often narrated by Rex Allen or Winston Hibler. There were the True Life Adventures, and then there were those that were actual stories, like "The Legend of Lobo", narrated by Rex Allen and the Sons of the Pioneers. Lobo is the tale of a particularly curious and intelligent wolf cub who grows to become the leader of a great pack in the American Southwest. Losing his parents to vengeful cattlemen when he was young, Lobo learned the scent of man well, and he repeatedly uses his wit and skill to outsmart them as his legend grows. Full of those delightful Disney scenes of young animals interacting with each other and grown animals being remarkably clever, "The Legend of Lobo" is a pure delight. This live-action, 67 minute film from 1962 is great family entertainment, though it does include Bambi-like themes of a young animal losing his parents. There is no dialogue from the characters, unless you count animal sounds. Instead, the narrator and songs tell the tale. It's what one expects from a Disney animal story of the mid-20th century, and, as such, is a great DVD to own if you love wolves, the Southwest, or classic Disney in general.

TRIVIA & BEHIND THE SCENES OF LOBO,
This review is from: The Legend of Lobo (DVD)
TRIVIA & BEHIND THE SCENES: Narrated by the great Rex Allen. The very catchy title song was written by Disney composers the Sherman Brothers, and sung by the Sons of the Pioneers. The exciting background score was by Disney veteran Oliver Wallace. Tagline for the movie, "A tale of the old west told in story and song". The other tagline for movie posters was, "The Hunter... The Hunted! In one lifetime he was both". Directed by James Algar and Jack Couffer. Jack was a long-time animal trainer for Disney, and two decades later would help produce "Never Cry Wolf". The filming was entirely on location in Sedona, Arizona and the scenery is beautiful. Filmed in Technicolor. Also included in many theaters with the movie was the Disney True-Life adventure short featurette "Water Birds", and the Goofy cartoon "Aquamania". Screenplay By Dwight Hauser and James Algar, based upon the story by Ernest Thompson-Seton. Released back when there was such a thing as a "G" rating, on November 7, 1962. First VHS release was in 1985. Running time is 67 minutes. DVD aspect ratio is 1.33:1
STORY: A wolf cub named Lobo is born in the desert Southwest, only to see his parents killed by man. The film follows him as he grows to the leader of his own wolf pack with his own cubs. He becomes an arch enemy of the local ranchers who can never catch him, since he is the smartest wolf ever known. The ranchers hire a professional hunter to kill Lobo, but he has never run into the likes of this wily wolf before. This is an exciting wildlife adventure story. |
