Dottie West has always been one of my favorites, mainly so because of her RCA days. Long before she donned the form-fitting sequined suits, the Farrah Fawcett hair, and the pounds of mascara, West was an achingly poignant, soulful country singer and this CD captures her at her artistic peak.

Two LPs from this period have been remastered and put on this single CD and it is 5 stars all the way. The sound quality is terrific, and the song selection is timeless. Dottie always had that method actor quality in her singing; she sang with the conviction of a woman who had known firsthand the struggle, heartache, and hope found in her lyrics. One can feel the pain, but lack of self-pity, in "I'd Be a Legend in My Time," my favorite track. This song, like most if not all of the others on this CD, is a cover of a song popular at the time.

This is an item that Dottie West fans must own. Those who prefer traditional, heartfelt country music will love it as well. I only hope that the folks who put this on CD release more 1960s and early 1970s Dottie music because this is one customer who will buy them as quickly as they are churned out.

If you is a lover of traditional country songs you need this album in your collection. 2 LP's, "A Legend In My Time" and "The Sound Of Country Music" are here together in one. With songs of Don Gibson, Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens and Harlan Howard only to ment some, is here a great opportunity to have these great country songs songed by a legend herself Dottie West.
The numbers are not from the hitlist but standard country songs from that time.
If this not is enough get "The Essential" Dottie West.

Dottie West released 28 albums on RCA between 1965 and 1975. This CD covers 2 LP's. The first 9 songs come from A Legend In My Time which was a sampler LP consisting of songs from 4th LP from 1967 (I'll help you forget her) and her 2nd LP from 1965 (Dottie West Sings). Her early LP's usually were produced by Chet Atkins and had the Jordanaires singing background. Dottie West really hit her stride on her 3rd LP Suffer Time, which is an extraordinary collection of songs and great production, but of course this is not available on CD so that's why I recommend this collection. What separated Dottie from other country singers of her era, besides her great singing voice and style was her emotional depth. People often point out the track Six Weeks Every Summer, but I'd rather point out her groundbreaking Country Girl LP from 1967. Country Girl is a bipolar recording. Dottie's highs on My goal for today are as evident as her emotional lows on Little Things. She could make you cry or make you feel like you were floating on air. As for A Legend, her version of There Goes My Everything is from the heart, No Sign Of Living is also excellent, but my favorite is a country shuffle called You're the only world I know, with that great backup by the Jordanaires. Tracks 10-19 come from an LP called Sound of Country Music. her 7th release from 1967. This is real straightforward honky-tonk and traditional country with fiddle & steel guitar. She does a great version of Loretta Lynn's You Ain't Woman Enough, which she sings with attitude, plenty of attitude. I think it was great that Collectibles records released this compilation. I would like to know what company now owns the RCA catalog, and what numbskull record executive is keeping her recordings out of print. At a minimum, the following LP's demand release based on excellence:
1. Suffer Time
2. Sacred Ballads
3.Makin' Memories
4.Country Girl
5. Forever Yours
6. If it's all right with you
7. House of Love
In the meantime, until someone sees fit to release this absolutely great country music, I would buy A Legend In My Time.
