About the Author

For over fifty years, Clara Talton Fugate has lived in the mountainous land of southwestern Virginia, the locale of her books in the Tales of the Virginia Wilderness series. In addition to rearing a son and three daughters, she taught school for forty-five years in the Virginia Counties of Lee and Scott. At the present time, she and her husband, both retired, make their main home in the Rye Cove section of Scott County on a farm which has been owned and occupied by members of the Fugate family since 1819. 'When I travel along the forks of the Clinch and the Holston rivers and through the gaps of the mountains into the flats and hollows of this land,' Clara says, 'voices from the past cry out their experiences to me.' In Fugate's Wilderness series, these exploits of heroism, hardship, and heartaches are passed on to her readers.
