Nia Umoja was created in 1990 in response to a newspaper headline that questioned whether a leading department store should have a black santa claus out of respect for their large diverse ethnic customer base. This question is what gave birth to Nia Umoja, a mythical African character that could delight and enchant children everywhere. He is rooted in the seven universally recognized principles that give Kwanzaa, the African-American cultural holiday, its strong foundation.
