One of the most popular and controversial of all East German films, Heiner Carow's The Legend Of Paul And Paula is both a romantic and an ironic view of love, with an underlying plea for individual freedom-- landmark film that remains beloved by German audiences today.
The story of two people who couldn't be more different and yet more perfect for each other, The Legend Of Paul And Paula is truly a legendary romance. Paula (Angelica Domrose) is an unmarried salesclerk with two children who thinks with her heart and wants nothing more than to achieve complete happiness in life. Paul (Winfried Glatzeder) is a conservative mid-level bureaucrat stuck in a loveless marriage who only wants to provide for his family and climb the social ladder. Although they're neighbors, it's not until they meet by accident one evening that they begin to fall in love. Paula attempts to liberate Paul from his complacency with her more free-spirited ways. When personal tragedies and heartache beset them both Paul begins to fully appreciate her love, but it may already be too late.
A party functionary who commits adultery... people with long hair listening to rock music...it became the 'Love Story' of East Germany! Paula became the name for newborns. --German Life
