2.0 out of 5 stars Very much a mixed bag June 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having listened to the original "Legend" literally hundreds of times, I was excited to see a remixed version of the album coming out. I assumed that it would consist of new extended remixes of the songs, putting a new spin on old songs, but staying somewhat true to the original songs. This album is far from that. I am not reviewing this album based on my original assumption, as that would be unfair. This review takes the album for what it is.

First off, there are some quality tracks to be found. Stephen Marley's remix of "Easy Skanking" is a very fun take on the original. He truly does build a bridge between his father's song and modern day sounds. Ziggy Marley's remix of "Redemption Song" stays pretty close to the original and has a great vibe to it. It's too bad the Marleys did not do all of the remixes because they seem to have a better feel for their father's music and how to update it with a more modern sound. Lastly, "Punky Reggae Party" featuring Lee Perry is just a darn good song. It really deviates from the original in that Perry adds a lot of vocals to the song, but it works and is a great track. So, there is some good in this album. It's not a total loss.

Now for the bad. I found myself wanting to listen to the original album during many of the songs on this album. The people who remixed them seemed to be content with just adding some electronic sounds to the music and make it sound bass heavy and updated for the sake of it. The remixes on these songs do nothing to capture the beauty of the original songs by Bob. Taken on their own, they are just not very good tracks, period. I doubt they are songs that Bob would listen to and say, "Wow, great job guys." I believe he would think they are junk and a travesty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Marley June 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I'm not one of those folks who feels that the songs on Legend are "too good" to be remixed. Reggae music has always been about reinterpretation. In the late 70s and early 80s, it was all about dub plates, disco mixes, 12" versions, and so on. Plus, few of the songs on Legend are the "original versions," anyway. When he signed to Island, Marley re-recorded much of his back catalogue. So if you're really concerned about the "original" versions of these songs, you need to track down a bunch of obscure Jamaican vinyl. Legend contains very few originals.

That said, how does Legend Remixed stand up as a 21st-century update? Unfortunately, not very well. Rather than dismissing or praising the entire collection, though, it might be helpful to evaluate it on a song-by-song basis:

The first four tracks are a promising start. The "Three Little Birds" remix, in particular, maintains the sunny, singalong vibe of the original but makes it even more "poppy." It's a great summer jam. And RAC's mix of "Could You Be Loved" has sort of an old-skool dub vibe, which is welcome. Other successful mixes include Thievery Corporation's "Get Up Stand Up," with programmed beats that propel, rather than overwhelm, the song. It almost has an Ace of Base vibe, for those of you who grew up in the 90s. And Photek's remix of "One Love/People Get Ready" turns the song into something mournful and mysterious, which actually kind of works. Ziggy Marley's "Redemption Song" adds very little in terms of electronics, opting instead for some acoustic percussion (of the sort you might hear in a drum circle). Jason Bentley's upbeat mix of "Is This Love" is built on a vocal sample of Bob Marley speaking and is, for the most part, a successful reinvention.

4.0 out of 5 stars An new take on a classic August 7, 2013
By Jennis
Format:Audio CD
I actually got Legend back in the day when you ordered CDs from a mailing service where you check the 10 CDs or whatever you want. I was in my teens and I got Legend by mistake. I was going to send it back for whatever crap I was listening to at the time and my dads friend suggested I keep it. 15+ years later and it's still one of my favorites. I heard a remix on KCRW a couple of weeks ago and I liked it and decided to get this album. I am glad I did, I like many of the remixes. They are a little hit & miss, not all of them are great, but I still like the revival of this album.

Took this to a party and it was a huge hit. Classic songs with a new twist. Heavy bass and if you have a great sound system it sounds incredible!

5.0 out of 5 stars They messed with a classic and it worked July 22, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The instant reaction to taking a classic like "Legend" is to leave it alone. But as Reggae has changed, taking this definitive work and modding it to 2013 was very well done. By having Marleys involved and park of the mod it feels right.

I don't like the remix! Bob Marley's kids did this to honor their dad, but how can they improve on what may be the best music ever recorded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob's classics with the new sounds of today December 9, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Lots of people are hating on this album, I think it's pretty good. There are a decent amount of remixes on here from Jim James, Beats Antique, Thievery Corporation, Ziggy and Stephen Marley, and especially Pretty Lights. The Pretty Lights 'Exodus' remix is completely insane and makes this album worth it on it's own! True 'dub'-step inspired by Reggae.

Don't compare this collection of tracks to the originals, because you will be disappointed. They are not as good as the classics. But just view these as new takes on the classics, an update to Bob Marley's music with the new sounds of today.

Huge Marley fan. Was so happy to see package in mail. Not too impressed with the actual CD. I like a handful of the songs but felt they could have done a better job.

This thing is crap! rip-off by a Marley family member looking to cash-in. I copied it to my PC then a few days I deleted it all. I feel scammed and I'm ashamed of myself today.
