Margaret, age fifteen, and Kerry, age eight, are sisters from the urban North and are sent to visit their Aunt Jane, who lives in a tidewater area on the rural southern coast. Kerry doesn’t know why she has been sent away, only that her mother and father are fighting.

Kerry finds reassurance, however, in a new friend—a cheerful boy named Jack who plies the waterways of the marshy tidewater in his little dinghy as he searches for crabs. Jack is only twelve, but seems wise beyond his years because he is in tune with the ebb and flow of nature and the wisdom of the seasons. He knows life is designed to be full of change.

Jack uses Kerry’s discovery of a sand dollar—and the coming Easter season—to help her see that the pain and uncertainty she feels now is but a "season." The story of Jesus’ suffering and resurrection as reflected in the sand dollar serves as a parallel to her pain. Kerry learns that with God’s help she can have hope for a better future.

Chris Auer of Savannah, GA, is a seasoned screenwriter and adapted The Legend of the Candy Cane for video. He has numerous scriptwriting credits, including More True Stories from Touched by an Angel with CBS. He was the creator-executive producer for the half-hour series Big Brother Jake from 1990 to 1994 and also worked for NBC's The Cosby Show.

Rick Johnson lives in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, with his wife, Gail, and their two children.

Illustrated with a superb elegance of grace and form by Rick Johnson, The Legend Of The Sand Dollar: An Inspirational Story Of Hope For Easter by Chris Auer is the story of an eight-year-old girl who learns the story of Easter in the sand dollar. The five holes in the sand dollar shell (only dead sand dollars wash up on beaches, and live sand dollars shouldn't be collected, the author notes in the very back of the book) symbolize the nails and the spear that pierced Jesus Christ, who died for humanity's sins. And when the sand dollar is broken, there appear five white particles representing doves and their promise of new life - the promise of Easter. A tender and heartwarming story of renewal.

I bought this book to use for a Women's Retreat based on Anne Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea - all the mom's and grandmom's on the committee plan to buy one for their own children, as I imagine others on the retreat will do as well. It is a beautiful presentation of the Easter story using one of God's gifts from the sea!

This is an excellent book for children because it gives a beautiful story of the sand dollar that is tied to the religious story of Jesus. I used it with a class of first graders and they loved it.
