5.0 out of 5 stars Spyro: a new beginning
I've always liked spyro games, especially on gamecube, but this one tops the scales. This game had its goods and bads. The graphics and sounds were awesome. The new melee attacks ruled but this game was a bit too short (unlike the past Spyro games) and not very challenging. Seems like all I did was go around taking out those ugly laughing baboons. Where was the adventure? Ugh! So that's why I only gave it a 3 star rating.

I've always liked spyro games, especially on gamecube, but this one tops the scales. Spyro is not only surrounded by characters with much more depth to their characters than before, but the game also has a very interesting story. Basically in this game the focus of the story is Spyro discovering who and what he is, what his powers are, and what he is destined to do. There are five other dragons, but only one would be considered a main character in this game. Sparx is Spyro's best friend, but has more character than he does in the old games and is much smarter. The story is very interesting and long. The loading time is short and varies from two to forty seconds(it does NOT take up half the game time like some reviews said). The game play focuses on using a combination of your breath abilities(fire, ice, electricity, and earth), along with various melee moves and combinations, and using special breath attacks on distant opponents(fire, ice, electricity, and earth). There are puzzles you have to solve, and different regions you travel depending on where you are in the story, but it does not focus on exploring regions and solving problems like previous Spyro games. The only playable character is Spyro, so of course there isn't a two player mode. You have a health bar, which is more practical for this game. It is slowly recharged by defeating enemies and destroying crystals. You also have a breath bar, which limits how long you can use a breath ability when attacking. Recharged like the health bar. There is also a fury meter, which when full, allows you to use fury attacks that can automatically destroy or weaken all nearby opponents. Recharged like health and breath bars, but takes a lot longer. Breath attacks are upgradeable, which is useful as the opponents become more challenging. The game may seem short if you get addicted to it a don't take a break until it is finished, but it is actually quite long. You have an infinite amount of lives, but if you were not an experinced player it would be impossible to get past some parts until your breath attacks are upgraded completely.
Overall, if you want a dragon game with an excellent story, good characters, and fun combat game play that requires skill and strategy this is an outstanding game. If you like to explore regions, complete puzzles and problems, have slightly silly characters, and have a silly, but fun storyline, this game is probably not for you. A movie on this game will come out in theaters on April 10, 2010 unless it is delayed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Satisfying, April 25, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (Video Game)
I have never played the original Spyro games, but I was attracted to this arc because of the story it told. When I first purchased it, I did not know how combat-centric it was going to be. Admittedly, the gameplay does get rather repetitive after a while, but the game makes up for it through its lush visuals, great voice acting, and compelling, epic storyline. The whole thing plays out like an animated movie; the combat sometimes seems like an interlude between the different sections of the story. You have unlimited lives, which helps, and you can utilize your different breaths in a variety of ways. While not everyone will be satisfied by this game, it is definitely a solid entry to a famous series.

This game disapointed me a little because i thought that it would be a little longer. However the theatrics were great to tell the story of the game. But because of all the theatrics the game is farily short. Fun game but not a lot of gameplay.

The first "Legend of Spyro" game is really fun. The second one had me kind of bummed because he no longer has his "tornado earth breath", and the apes lost their funny monkey howls and laughs. I played this one at least four times just because I loved the monkeys. In the second game they just sound like zombies and it was dull. :( Where's my funny monkeys? lol
All in all it was awesome, I shared it with a friend who really liked it too.

A New Beginning is my first entry into the the Spyro universe and I'm rather impressed. This is more of a interactive movie intended to develop Spyro as a character by showing Spyro's origins than a game and at that I think it works well. The graphics by Krome Studios are some of the best I've seen in ANY game and are beautiful, colorful and well rendered. As a Game I agree with loyal Spyro fans that there is much to be desired. First of all I had to turn up the brightness of my TV just to see where I'm going on some levels cause they were too dark and murky. I was disappointed Spyro gets little flying time and when he does it more or less in one direction with no options to fly where you want. Theres almost no brain teasers. The rest of the game he forgets how to fly and can only glide probably from being whacked on the head too many times by those evil obnoxious Mandrills. The bosses were fairly good. One, "The Conductor" who tries to run down Spyro with a Locomotive from Hell while raining grenades down on Spyro's head in the Lava pits was one of the most intense bosses I've ever played. The rest of the game is just a beat em'up Kung Fu style game which at least is more fun with Spyro than with Bruce Lee. I would buy this game anytime for the story, beautiful music and art rather than playing. I hope soon Activision who owns Spyro ( And strangely cancelled the Spyro Movie ) listens to Spyro's fans and gets Spyro back into gear as one of the best games ever.

I've loved all the previous Spyro games and was really excited to get this new one. It only took about 4 hours to finish....very disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars good game, but a big change for spyro, October 14, 2008

i got this game mostly because the cover looked cool. it ended up being a pretty fun game, but it was much different than most spyro games. first, there are an infinite amount of gems, and you cant buy anything with them. they just refill health, breath, and level-up power. spyro's powers can upgrade to your choice which is cool. the powers he has are much better than previous spyro games. you get the power to upgrade from blue gems, and there are an infinite number of those which you get from killing the infinite number of bad guys. the bad guys are very easy to beat, and they have cool names. there are four levels which arent hard, and the bosses at the end of them are very easy to defeat. the final boss is a little tricky, but the main hard part was walking/flying to the boss stage. there are no special mini games or levels you can do, just kill all the bad guys and save the world. the character voices are good, and i enjoy watching all of the cut scenes. sparx has a sense of humor, which adds a bit to the game. this game doesnt last very long, but it does provide a lot of fun. warning: if you get this game, you will really want to get the next two, so think about what you are stepping into.

p.s. the lighting for this game is terrible, and on many parts, you can't really see anything.
