Legend of the Werestag by Tessa Dare,
By JenB99 (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Legend of the Werestag (Kindle Edition)
Legend of the Werestag is a pleasant enough historical romance novella with interesting characters and an engaging plot, but the pacing isn't particularly even and I'm not sure the romance is developed enough to be completely believable (the story is only 45 pages long in .pdf format). The Great Reveal is a bit too easy and predictable for my taste as well. The idea behind the novella is cute, but I'd have loved to see it fleshed out more and developed into a full-length novel. I did like the author's charming narrative voice, though, so I will probably give her recent release Goddess of the Hunt a try. All in all, an average read with great potential.

This had huge potential but it was a bit of a let down. She is a great author but this fell short. No angst. No real depth.

This book was very cute, but I don't think it was really worth the money. I love Tessa Dare books, but if you are really looking for a good book but her try her Goddess of the Hunt book and the two books that follow!

Good characters, but not enough suspense for Catherine Morland.,

This is not a paranormal book, but still it does try to fit into the Regency romance world, and I had hoped to see more Catherine-Morland-type-Regency-gothic-suspense than the novel delivered. The dreaded secret is too easily predicted.
This book is very, very short (more of a short story than an actual novel), with over 15% of the content being advertising at the end. Therefore, the story is not particularly complex. In spite of this, the characters (total of five) were well drawn for the reader. The story has a lot of Regency romance predictability: Lucas is tormented by his past and therefore feels he does not deserve Cecily's love, and Cecily is a love-struck ninny who eventually is shown to be much stronger than we initially believed; there is hot sex midway through the book and then true love and HEA at the end. I thought that Cecily admitting her love for Lucas so early in the story was a bit contrived until I realized the book was so very short that the author had to be speed-writing the evolution of the plot. But Tessa Dare was able to use the characters' ruminations and dialogue effectively and thus allowed the story to have entertainment value in spite of its brevity. Tessa Dare is a good author but she must have spat this one out in a day, and as such, it should be a 99 cent book as there is too little for the price. |
