My boyfriend got my a game boy color for the holidays last year. I'm a big vidiot so this gift wasn't that nuts -- but I still wondered "why the heck do I need a game boy color? I already have enough video game systems!" Well, Zelda answered that question and gave me a reason to fall in love with my GBC.Zelda's simply faboo. I loved all the older Zelda games because they're so challenging and it's hard to get sick of them. The new Ocarina of Time (for N64) is *FANTASTIC* with graphics that rival Play Station games -- and I'm almost done beating it, but lately I've been focusing my time on the small screen (GB color, that is). Link's Awakening doesn't quite compare to Ocarina, but for a small screen edition the graphics are quite impressive. The dungeons and other areas are vast and colorful; lots of "bad guys" to battle and even secret "warp tunnels" and other hidden gems to find. There's so much to do that I know I'll have to invest much more time in order to finish the game. There's a bunch of other fun stuff to do while playing too. You can play games, take photos, harass chickens, catch fish, dig around the prairie, and trade items (like bows, dog food, and bannanas!) What I don't like is the item selection; this is mostly due to the lack of extra buttons on the GB. Basically you can only use two weapons at once. So let's say you have your sword and your feather set to your A & B buttons. This allows you to kill bad guys and jump over holes. But let's say you must kill a bad guy then quickly jump over something, and then you need to have your magic ready -- which is not equipped! To equip your magic you have to hit "start," select your magic (and replace one of your other items in order to have room for the magic), then quickly execute your move. If you have to make another move directly after that, then you're kinda S.O.L. It's tough to switch back and forth between equipment/weapons. I've found that it is also quite hard to jump over things when you don't have your feather equipped (that's supposed to be comedy - get it?). Overall, though, this game will undoubtedly provide me with hours of entertainment and it has certainly given me a reason to play my Game Boy Color. If you get stuck on any of the levels, you can always visit ninetendo's website and look for their strategy help (that's how I knew where to find the Slime Key! -- yes, I'm a cheater, but why else does Ninetendo make those guides printable?). I hope this information has been helpful to you. Happy Gaming!

"Legend of Zelda:Link's Awakening" is one of the all-time winners of gameboy! Even with all the hype about Pokemon, it's hard to see why this game is passed up in favor of Pokemon. There actually IS a plot in this game (unlike Pokemon), but it's a little murky near the beginning, though soon becomes a touch disturbing, and leaves you questioning your mission as the Nightmares (bosses) reveal bits and pieces of the history of the island. The music is superb for gameboy, and the endgame combination of music and animation almost made me cry (when will "Ballad of the Wind Fish" be released on cd?). Although pokemon has more replayablity then Zelda (since Zelda isn't really an RPG, but Pokemon is), Zelda has overall better music, better plot development, better puzzles, better graphics (no long animated sequences in Pokemon!), better sprites, and an overall better story. So if you have a choice between Zelda and Pokemon, for your own sake, chose Zelda.

Mom - Dad won't give back my GameBoy!,

Legend of Zelda is a fantastic game. I'm a 33 year old big kid who bought this game on a whim to pass the time while travelling on business. I logged many hours on the original Zelda about 10 years ago and find this version to be equally entertaining. This game has great graphics, interesting character interactions and challenging puzzles to solve and mysteries to uncover. The game area is huge. The outside world has 100+ screens and each of the eight levels has over 20. I've logged 135+ attempts which has to be over 60 hours and still haven't finished the game. Zelda does a great job of blending problem solving with action adventure. It is too challenging for my 4 & 6 year old boys but they love to watch me play. The older one likes to offer advice; sometimes he's right! The biggest problem I have now is sneaking GameBoy away from them long enough to play.

Nintendo's Zelda franchise is among the most famous series of video games around. Having played and beaten the Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time, I still found myself longing for this little Game Boy game. Believe it or not, I think that Link's Awakening is superior to Link's Nintendo 64 outing.Perhaps it is because Link's Awakening has an actual story. For that matter, it's a rather twisted story. Link shipwrecks on the oceans and finds himself on the mysterious Koholint Island. Even though there are beaches, trees, and villages, the most notable thing about the island is the massive egg that adorns the summit of the Tal Tal Heights. That's just the beginning. There isn't a princess to save here - there's something far more strange at the core of this tale. The story makes you want to go on, especially after it takes that one major twist (everyone who has played it probably knows what I'm talking about). The play control is perfect, complementing the sharp, detailed graphics. The sound, remarkably enough, is not annoying. I must also mention that the dungeons are very well crafted, as are their sinister bosses. If there ever was an "essential" Game Boy game, this is definitely the one. No Game Boy owner should be without it.

This game is simply the best game for the gameboy you can buy. With 8 dungeons and an entire island to explore, you'll be playing this game for a long time. It has great replay too because once you beat it the first time, you can go back and try to beat it without dying once ( which accesses a slightly different ending), beating it without dying once is hard but possible. Link starts in a small village known as Mabe village, and must wake the Wind Fish in order to leave the island. You find out by level 5 that you are in a dream! If you are looking for an rpg/action game this is definetely the best game to get. Link gets an arsenl of weopons/tools such as the hook shot, magic wand, and the ultimate sword. You get to explore deserts, forests, a bay, moutains, fields, swamps, another village, a castle, and just about every other terrain you can think of. There are many situations where you can't figure out any solution and then you wake up in your sleep at 1:00 in the morning with an idea( I've done it before). I'll make it simple for you, BUY THIS GAME!

What can i say! This is the BEST GAME EVER! The puzzles are so original! The monsters are cool! The story is fantastic! Finishing this game is the best feeling you will ever have! How could a game this good be so overlooked by gamers, sure this game won't wow you with fantastic graphics, but for the most immersive gaming experience ever you have to play Zelda: Links Awakening.

If you get into this game, it will provide you with many many hours of fun and challenges. However, as with many roleplaying games, if you get to a part where you're stuck, you may be tempted to just quit. However, there's so much good stuff in this game that I hope you won't - go find one of the FAQs or walkthroughs on the web to help you out.If you're familiar with the Pokemon game, this is similar, but you have to fight any bad guys (instead of relying on your Pokemon to do it)! This requires a bit of dexterity (something you didn't really need for Pokemon), and also some fast thinking. There are a variety of puzzles in the games, including boss monsters with specific weaknesses, areas to get through that require some fancy footwork, rock-pushing puzzles, and the usual role-playing game puzzles of figuring out what to do with some of the items you find. It's easy in spots, but challenging enough at many points to really keep your interest. The color enhancements to the original game are nice, and the music is varied and pleasant. A couple of hints for you - after you get the boots, try charging at the walls in the library. Also, if you get the bow, and equip with the bow and with bombs, you can shoot a "bomb arrow" by pressing both buttons at once. It'll be like a normal arrow, but it will explode on impact.

Best Ever Zelda Game for Gameboy,
By Gameboy Freak "Livy" (VA, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (Game Cartridge)
This was my first Zelda game and my favorite. This game seems to have everything. Basically, Link is sailing in the ocean and finds himself caught in a storm, knocked unconscious, and awakes on the shore of Koholint Island, having been cared for by Marin, a girl who lives in a hut with her father Tarin in Mabe Village. After wandering around for a while you meet an extremely irritating owl who tells you have to wake the Wind Fish if you ever want to leave Koholint and return home.
The game's graphics are simple but excellent, especially considering this game was made for Gameboy Color. The characters are funny and you actually get attatched to them. The music is the kind that gets stuck in your head if you play the game for too many straight hours (which I'm considering a good thing). There are secret warp holes, a hidden dungeon, challenging sub-quests, and a cute little village where animals frolic about and talk to you. Best of all, however, this game has an excellent plotline, and, when you get a certain item, you can catch chickens on fire. The only negative on this game is sometimes you just get very badly stuck on a dungeon or even inbetween dungeons. In these cases I referred to an online strategy guide, but if your either very smart or very patient you can figure it out for yourself.

Best game boy game ever except...,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (Game Cartridge)
THis is by far the best game boy game ever. THe only problem is I have been playing this game for hundreds of hours and still havent beaten it. This is a challenging exciting and extremely hard game. THis game combines logic with problem solving with non stop fighting action. THe final two levles are basicially impossible and I have been trying to beat them for months. In this game you find yourself washed up on a beach and a old couple take you in. After a few minutes of playing you figure out that you are on a island with the only way to get off the island is by gathering eight insturments protected in doungeons by giant beasts. Once (and if) you can collect these eight insturments you have to wake the wind fish who has the ability to get you off the island.THe really fun part is there are many different weapons and tools which are used for many different things. HInt: Don't use a gameshark some cheats can completely deleet your saved file. THe only dissappointment is that the game is named zelda and Zelda isn't even in the game. So if you can somehow get the time tis is the game to play!!!!!!!!!!:))

Best Zelda Game Period,
By Tired of the BS "Menckenitus" (Washington, D.C. USA) - See all my reviews

I have been a Zelda fan since the golden cartridge of ye olde Nintendo. But when I held this game in my hand and beat it for the thousanth time, making it my second most played game since chrono trigger, and found all the secrets in both GB and GBC versions,I sa back and realized that the game never got old. The game of course was challenging like all other Zelda games. However, this game was special. Like the first of the Zeldas You only get 2 swords so you can't sit there with your level four mastersword and beat bosses in one shot, and the other sword is side quest that will go through your whole quest. Instead yo have to use strategy for the extra difficult bosses as well as the new items at your disposal a.k.a. the Roc's Feather the most important item you will ever have. Nex the levels are not just slashy slashy. These are actual Traps and actual brain teasers. You have to think you have to organize and time your item throwing you have to remember where things are and how to get there. Third, the secrets are fun and challenging. The trading game and the seashell for swords quests can keep you busy fo hours on end. But the story, OH SAINTS BE PRAISED the story. o see Links relation shipp with all the people, especially Mallin (Forgive meif I didnt get it right I haven't played it sice beating it the 14,752 time). But after seeing the relationship between the young savior the girl who took him in, the mystrious island, the wierd egg at its peak, finding out who the wind fish is, and what will happen when link finds a way home. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, BUY THE GAME you shant be dissapointed.
