Two classic Zelda games on one little disk!,
By Blade (WA, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest) (Video Game)
To begin, I'd like to admit that I grew up on Zelda since the age of seven during the Christmas of '92 when I bought 'A Link to the Past' not too long after. I immediately became HOOKED!! When I was about nine, I gave the follow-up, 'Link's Awakening' a try (Yes, I've played BOTH the GB and GBC versions already now) and enjoyed it just as much. Finally, when 'Ocarina of Time' hit stores in '98, I was quite curious but a bit unsure if it would take away that good ol' classic feeling that I'd loved as a kid (I am a retro fan after all when it comes to gaming) so I decided to rent it for my N64. I wasn't in any way disappointed. Almost everything about the game resembled to that of the NES, SNES, & GBC originals, aside from the new and impressive 3D look.
The dungeons were fun and challenging, the puzzles were well thought out, and the bosses were simply SPECTACULAR! In addition, the controls were easy to master and you could practically do more than before. (With the 64-bit graphics, how could you go wrong?) But most of all, the musical score was one of the most beautifully composed works I'd ever heard and nearly brought a tear to my eye a couple times. I'd play the game for hours on end and never get tired of it. It's possibly THE greatest Zelda of all time and creator, Shigeru Miyamoto had truly outdone himself with this one. In 2003 when 'The Windwaker' was hitting U.S. shores for Gamecube, those who pre-ordered it would receive this awesome Bonus Disk. Fortunately, I was one of the many who could get it for free, and I must say that it's splendid to see the rebirth of a classic. Despite some minor problems (e.g. the music may skip a little here and there) this is actually an excellent transfer straight from the N64 to the GC. In fact, it's almost better than what it used to be. For example, the picture quality is sharper and clearer than it once was and the graphics' animation is slightly improved over the N64 version. As a bonus, the game, 'Master Quest' is also included, which is the same story as 'Ocarina', only the dungeons are different and the overall gameplay is far more difficult than the original. (You may need to refer to a strategy guide for help on this one) Nevertheless, it's a special treat for those who are looking for an extra challenge. I HIGHLY recommend this game(s) to any and all Zelda fans that haven't gotten the chance to try it yet. For those of you who've already played through and beaten it, you can relive the adventure all over again in 'Master Quest'. Be sure to pick this one up wherever you can find it because it IS a very rare and hard-to-find lost gem. Better yet, just buy a copy here off amazon.com. You'll be happy you did! :)

Now, let me star off by saying that I LOVE oot. It's graphics hold up quite well even for today's standards. The camera operation is real jerky and is not that great. The different catagories of the game and it's ratings will be in the gamecube's version review. Now let's talk about the gamecube version.
In this package, there is a new, remixed, master-quest version of the game.It is the same game, only the dungeons are different. Now, the transfer from cartridge to disc is actually quite good, considering the technological differences, but in reality, it does have some errors. Errors: Music skips if you enter a different area with the same music. Sometimes the sharpness filter makes 2-D objects more visible. The filter they used is good and bad(sorta). It gives the game a slightly sharper look (which is good), but as said above, it makes the 2-D objects more visible. There is also a boost in resolusion which makes backgrounds and detail look alot better. Now for the pros and cons: pros: Sharper look Boost in resolution. Same Game Master quest cons: music skips 2-D objects mare visible Ratings: Gameplay: 9/10 Music 10/10 Sound effects 12/10 Voices 5/10 (because of navi) P.S. If you have a pro logic ll decoder, try the surround feature it is awesome (this was on the n64 version too, but I thought I'd mention it anyway)

For those of you who are like me, you've been replaying Ocarina every couple of years or so. In my book, this is the greatest game ever made. It is the only game I've ever played that keeps my attention for more than an hour (I'm not at all a "hardcore gamer"). So, when I heard about this Master Quest thing, I tried really hard to find one. Unfortunately, I could not initially locate one. But then, one day, a couple of months later, I ran across a used copy in a GameStop.
This game is amazing. For me, it's a blast having new dungeons to navigate, and it's also amazing to have the same story I loved going on. It's also a chance to redeem myself, I guess. When I first beat the original on N64, I used a strategy guide for all the dungeons. Now, I can try and beat the game without any sort of outside help. For me, this is a chance of a lifetime of sorts. As corny as this sounds, Ocarina of Time has had an impact on my life. It really taught me to appreciate the artistic values of video games, and also shows that some of the best stories happen on a mini disc that cost me 20 dollars. PS: I also love the rest of the Zelda games, with Wind Waker and Link's Awakening tying for second behind Ocarina. Can't wait until Twilight Princess!

Being an avid "Zelda Gamer" since '93, I was very anxious to get Ocarina of Time when I saw an advertisement for it on TV. My parents ended up getting me the game for X'mass 1998, and I was totally amazed.
The first thing I noticed was that the graphics were amazing, never before had I ever seen anything like that before. It was almost like the entire Zelda Universe had come to life. Nintendo did an amazing job at working out the minor details which made the game soo much better. The gameplay was revolutionary. OoT was one of the first games to introduce "Z" targeting to games, a very handy dandy feature that allowes players to target various objects, ranging from enemies, characters, or strategic objects. The button lay-out was very easy to learn and use efficiently all throughout the game. In addtion to that, a player is allowed to wield a variety of weapons which all have different characteristics - the typical swords, hook shots, hunting bows, boomerangs ect. A person is also allowed to play an Ocarina, an instrument in which they must use to play important songs in the game, or just compose their own music for fun. One can also ride horses, go fishing, play archery/target practice games or simply walk around and enjoy the stunning and diverse scenery of the game The greatest gameplay addtion to the game are the two worlds. Well, it's actually just one world, but there are two perspectives to it. One can explore Hyrule as a child or an adult. Through each perspective, the character might be able to encounter different enemies, meet new people, or access hidden areas. This not only adds replay value, but makes the game much more interesting. The sound effects and music in the game were outstanding as well. even though most people might not even listen to the background songs, they were very well composed and add a nice atmosphere wherever one goes. You might not be surprised if you start bobbing your head to the lively tunes of the Lost Forest or Geradu Valley. The game's story is simply amazing. It's very easy to understand, and keeps one interested in the game. Even though the game appears to be a simple "save the world from evil", there's alot more to it. The creators from Nintendo have added several themes to the story to make it more in depth and feel like "Lord of the Rings" of Nintendo. Ocarina of Time is quite the greatest game of all times. It has a great story, gameplay, graphics, sound and music and feels amazingly realistic. This is a must buy for everyone interested in video games. -PS: From personal experience, I liked the N64 version better than the GC one, only because the GC one froze once in a while.... But its still the same game

This review is from: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest) (Video Game)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest actually includes two games, Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Master Quest has the same story and landscape, but the dungeon puzzles are changed; it is actually harder to play Master Quest after you have played the original.
Both games have you start out playing as a boy living with other children called the Kokiri children of the forest. The game begins when the guardian spirit of the Kokiri, the Great Deku tree Summons the boy (whose name is what ever you type in at the beginning but his general name is Link) to him after the Deku tree is cursed. After breaking the curse Link travels all over the land of Hyrule to search for the spiritual stones of fire and water to stop an evil thief named Ganondorf from finding a powerful object called the Triforce. To do this he must collect items like a boomerang, slingshot, and bombs. Link will battle dinosaurs and travel within giant fish and trees. In the later part of his journey he goes inside volcanoes, under the water, and even under a graveyard! To complete the game it will take 40 hours or more! Add in all the side quests and you are looking at 70+ hours of gameplay; and then you can redo it in the Master Quest! The only problems I found is that the controls feel strange compared to other Gamecube Zeldas (like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess). By today's standards the graphics are not that good, but when the game was released in 1998 they were some of the best seen on the Nintendo 64. However despite these problems the game is still one of the best I have played on any console. You should get this game!

A wonderful blend of action and RPG Zelda,

This review is from: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest) (Video Game)
I first got into Zelda in the 8th grade, when a couple of friends introduced me to Majora's Mask. Shortly after that, my brother got Majora's Mask as a birthday gift. When I started playing that, I was instantly hooked. The game was so cool! But where is my mind? I am reviewing Ocarina of Time - Master Quest, not Majora's Mask.
This disc, as you already hav noticed, is two games in one. You can play the original and wonderful Ocarina of Time, emulated near-perfectly on the Gamecube, or you can take on the challenge of Master Quest, which is a revamped Ocarina of Time. Since I've already played Ocarina of Time, I'm going to review Master Quest. Master Quest is not completely different from Ocarina of Time. The story and goals are still the same: You play as the young hero Link (you actually get to name yourself with a name other than Link) and fight to save Hyrule from the grip of the evil Ganondorf (one of the coolest bad dudes in Zelda history). It is not the adventure that is harder, but the dungeons, or temples, that are more challenging. However, some of the temples are easier in Master Quest, so you won't have a completely hard time. Let me say that I mostly enjoyed all of the dungeons and temples, as they were all challenging in a good way. The gameplay was awesome, but there was one slight problem. It is a little harder to control Link with the Gamecube controller. By saying this, I mean it is harder to walk or aim properly with a 3rd person perspective weapon. This can make the game a little frustrating at times, which is why I gave the game a 4 out of 5 on the fun factor. But the game is still great. The music...WOW. Kojo Kondo (did I spell that right?) did a wonderful score for the game. Every place in the game has fitting music. I wish I could get the soundtrack for the game, just to listen to some of the music from the game. Awesome, awesome, awesome. This game has a high replayability, because not only will you want to relive the adventure, but there are so many things to do in this game that you'll just never want to stop playing. I'm addicted to it myself. All in all, a wonderful game. I would recommend this one to all Zelda fans like myself. And for anyone who wants a decent adventure, the original Ocarina of Time is worth playing.

Ocarina of time is possibly the best Video game of all time. No other game I've played has more heart and soul. The Master Quest re-works the dungeons so they are truly different. Of course they still look the same generally. The 1st Zelda I played was 'Link to the Past' on the Super Nintendo. I didn't like it at 1st cause it was top-down, and I was used to side scrollers. How wrong can you be. It didn't take long to fall in love with it. If you loved OOT, you have to get the Master Quest. Period.

Played it first on N64 when it came out, and now my kids get a chance as well. Of course, graphics are always improving over time, but a good story and attention to detail are what make Zelda games continue to be so fun to play. Playing Ocarina of Time again makes me feel like I've been away awhile and just returned to the innocence and wonder of my childhood, just like it did when I first played it years ago. That's classic.
