5.0 out of 5 stars An expanded look at the Legend - for serious collectors only
There is a reason that Legend is the best selling reggae album of all time - simply put, it contains 14 (now 16+) of the best tracks of the best artist of the entire genre. The music on this CD will take you to another place, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Legend album is an essential component to any music collection.

This expanded edition is great for...

This expanded edition is great for serious Marley fans and collectors, but is not highly recommended for casual fans. The second disc is full of remixes and expanded versions that are definite treats and quite enjoyable, but not essential listening. If you are new to reggae and only want the absolute best, stick with the single disc remastered version of Legend - which is improved over the original version by adding two key bonus tracks - Easy Skanking and Punky Reggae Party (both well deserving to be included as some of Marley's best tracks) - and superior remastered sound. It's cheaper and provides the essential look at the Legend of Bob Marley. Even if you're a casual fan who is loaded and don't mind shelling out big bucks for music, I would recommend that you splurge and get the Songs of Freedom 4 CD set, which provides a more comprehensive overview of the artist's entire career than this 2 CD set.

The liner notes of the expanded edition (and the single disc remastered edition) consist of a 28 page booklet containing the lyrics to the 16 tracks on the first CD. The lyrics are helpful to new fans of Marley, as his Jamaican accent can have you wondering what exactly he is singing about.

One Love!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, March 6, 2002
This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
The basics :
1. Remastered sound quality is excellent.
2. CD 1 : 2 additional tracks : "Easy Skanking" and "Punky Reggae Party". Worthwhile.
3. CD 1 : "Exodus" and "Stir It Up" are now the longer LP versions rather than the edited singles. Good move.
4. CD 2 : Extended remixes from 1980's 12-inch singles. generally excellent with a few duds ("Buffalo Soldiers" ala disco).
Summary : A significant upgrade from an already-excellent release. A worthwhile purchase even if you already own the first CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! PROBLEMS with ONE LOVE on this release!, September 3, 2005
This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
This is a huge warning to all Bob Marley fans in Europe!!!!!!

There is a big mistake on this Legend Deluxe release!!! I guess someone has been sleeping / or didnt do his job well.... cause, One Love (Extended Version) and One Love (Dub) are the same!
They added 2 times the extended version istead of the great very rare 1984 Dub version! This One Love Dub is missing! What a huge mistake, and a big big big big shame!
Only in Europe, cause I do own the US release which does the right tracklisting! So including the One Love dub version! Thank god! Lucky me the US version is different and right!

So be carefull purchasing the European EU version, with the glossy look and feel!
Go for the US version with normal mat paper hardcover... which includes both One Love tracks >> Extended & DUB !!!!!!

I have contacted Universal about this problem, and they will give attention to it... but it can be take for year before all these wrong cd's has been out of stock!

I am sad, but the US version I will give definatly 5 stars! Just for the 1984 remixes cd 2!!!!

Good Vibes

5.0 out of 5 stars Expanded Legend, February 26, 2002
This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
Bob Marley's Legend compilation is among the biggest selling greatest hits albums of all time. The album cuts across all musical genres as rock fans, hip hop fans, r&b fans as well as reggae fans count it as part of their collection. The original set is augmented by a second disk of remixes and even if you are one of the multitudes who already own Legend, the second disk is worth the purchase as well as the remixing of the first disk which provides a superior sound to the original.

I already had the First Legend Set but this One also Offers Longer Versions&Re-Mixes.the Great thing about Bob Marley is that no matter how many times you listen to His Material you still find yourself Hearing something new&makes it that much more challenging to the Ear&Presentation.Bob Marley understood the Depth&Power of Words&Music.I have quite a few Records of His but if you are just starting out&wondering what Makes Bob the Great Musical Genius He was this will answer that&so much more.the Man Poured His Heart into His Craft&Left a Strong Imprint on Music.THe MAN is World Music&People Music more Importantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best just got better, March 5, 2002

This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
Ask someone to name a reggae artist, and the first name that comes to mind is always Bob Marley. The Rasta man's greatest hits collection, Legend, is the best-selling reggae album of all time, certified 10 times platinum. To many, this compilation is the reggae album--and the Marley album--for even casual fans. Over the past few months, the folks at Universal have been remastering Marley's classic material and reissuing it with loads of bonus material. Well, they've just done it again.

Now Legend is bigger and better than ever, with almost 2 ½ hours of music. The first disc, "Legend Remastered" features the 14 tracks from the original album, plus two the additional cuts that appeared on the UK cassette. But the real jewels are found on disc two, "The Legend Remixes," which contains 13 remixes, most of which have never appeared anywhere other than the original 12" singles. One of the best, and of particular interest for collectors, is the previously unreleased remix of "Lively Up Yourself."

The new deluxe edition of Legend includes the original artwork, photos and liner notes, plus a whole lot more. Whether you're a long time Marley fan, or just someone looking for some good reggae, this compilation is an essential part of any collection. The legend lives on.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY THESE GREAT '84 REMIXES ON CD!, February 14, 2002

This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
Legend~Deluxe is the last in a serie of 3 Deluxe editions Island has issued. So this also would be a 2CD set compilation, after Catch a fire and Exodus...
The package is nice but I still do think they didn't choose the right size of Marley's most famous picture! Too big, which results that you don't see the whole picture compared with the original CD/LP cover!
CD 1 includes all those tracks which has been originally issued on the tape/casette version of the legend in 1984... this casette was released including the tracks EASY SKANKING and PUNKY REGGAE PARTY.
So in fact not really bonus tracks on this LEGEND DELUXE.. just complete (Punky Reggae Party - Long Version)
For the real Marley fans, like I am :o) CD2 is much more interesting! If I am honest, I was waiting for this copilation!
The first time I heard a song of Bob was around the 80's...
So when they originally released the album Legend in 1984.., I also bought all the 12" Maxi-Singles they released at that time!

Totally 5 issues >> One Love (#1)(remixed by Julian Mendelsohn),
One Love (#2) (Remixed by Godwin Logie), Waiting In Vain, Three Little Birds, Could You Be Loved (Or in several other countries Jamming)
I have great memories to all of the remixes which were included on these great 12" singles released in '84! I don't understand why Island records didn't show pictures of all the covers of these! The covers are so beautifull, great photos! Each of them!
To leave the original 12" B-side of Wating In vain is a shame!
It is the famous MARLEY MIX UP mixed by CHAD JACKSON, a medley of 4 Marley tracks... kicking of by a part of the radio advert. they included on Exodus Deluxe. I am sure the Marley Maniacs would miss it as well like I do!
But thank God I do own the original Maxi-Singles :o) !!!!!
Including Lively Up Yourself wouldn't be my choise at all!
Only because of Eric ET Thorngren remixed it also around 1984?
OK, never been released before... but it would find a better place on the Remaster version of Natty Dread!
Buffalo Soldier (A kind of KING SPORTY MIX? ....), Jamming, and Waiting In Vain were released before.. on the original US version. But why did they mixed the Legend on this way???
Again remixed by Eric ET Thorngren, but 2 of these tracks lost Marley's message totally I think! Too much drumbox effects which were really not necessarily!
But I still think Finally all these great '84 remixes on CD!
Just Enjoy It!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, December 19, 2004
By
This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
It's not just that Legend is the greatest collection of Reggae mustic ever assembled outside of Songs of Freedom; it's that Legend is one of the greatest collections of music period. To say that this album is a "seminal reggae" album is as ignorant as saying that Jefferson Davis would have freed the slaves too. It's seminal music, it is an example of the musical arts in its highest form. This is what music is SUPPOSED to be (not merely Legend, the music Marley made in general). I challange you to pick out a Bob Marley song, and Legend is merely (well, in brief atleast) of his music. Teenaged American kids 30 years removed from the struggle, with zero comprehension of the fight still find amazing in this music, like Shakespeare it trascends time and steretypes to create something truly beauitful.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a reason this is the #1 reggae album of all time, March 19, 2004

This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
Legend (Deluxe Edition) is absolutely worth every penny. It is the #1 reggae album of all time because it was written and performed by Marley and the Wailers, who are all extremely talented. The same way that Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" is a jazz album that even jazz haters enjoy, those of you familiar with reggae, even those of you with negative feelings about reggae, give it a try. My personal favorite song on the whole album is the extended version of "One Love". Go for it, your music collection is dying for some Jamaica.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums, June 10, 2002
This review is from: Legend (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
This album is great. The first cd is great, and the extra tracks are really pretty good. The second cd is pretty good too, and it is interesting to hear some classic Marley remixed (ex. Buffalo Soldier). The second cd is worth the money, as are the two extra tracks. The packaging and liner notes are great, so if you're looking for some good, all-inclusive Bob Marley music, go with this album. Personal favorite: "No Woman, No Cry." Even for the casual fan, this is the perfect album. I liked it so much, I just recently bought it on vinyl for a more authentic sound. Definetely buy this cd!
