Awesome HBO Concert "The Legendary Ladies Of Rock & Roll" from 1987 feature all of these incredible singers in peak form with great backing from a stellar band featuring inspired background singers in a first rate production and it is clear that the audience is having a huge party throughout...stunning HBO Special and sadly they don't make them like this anymore and it is sad to think that this classic event is no longer in print and has yet to be released on DVD!
Opening with "Heat Wave" & "I'm Ready For Love", Martha Reeves shows why she is one of the main leaders of the classic 60's Motown legecy as her voice and presence are electrifying...next is Lesley Gore who does a riveting "You Don't Own Me" along with a soulfully charged "It's My Party" that has everyone bouncing off the walls. The First Lady Of Motown Mary Wells whose early hits built the label find Mary in peak form doing stellar versions of her classics "My Guy" & "You Beat Me To The Punch" and watching this wonderful talent it is easy to see why this great singer was the first Motown Records female Superstar...still has it together here sounding even greater than on the original hit recordings yet at this time in her life Mary Wells had no recording contract which was strange and sad showing that the industry let her down in a big way. Shirley Alston Reeves is sublime doing classic hits from her legendary group The Shirelles and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" & "Tonight's The Night" are both definitive and the whole cast of classic ladies join Shirley for a stunning version of the huge mega-hit "Soldier Boy". Wild Diva supreme Freda Payne donned in a totally incredible gold sequined sexy gown struts her classic "Band Of Gold" with what started off as a duet with Belinda Carlisle becoming a stunning tour-de-force by Ms. Payne who would have been a more equal duet partner with Marilyn Monroe and as a result made Carlisle look like a lost rag doll who wanted and needed to make a quick escape...this red-hot Diva gives a riveting performance and Freda's rangy and powerful voice is amazing and it is too bad they didn't have Freda do more although she is a stand-out in the complete cast songs! Next a true legendary lady Brenda Lee who is in awesome vocal form as she wrings every ounce of emotion out of her classic "I'm Sorry" and rocks-out with Clarence Clemons for a rousing version of "That's All You Gotta Do" that is electrifying bringing the house down! Ronnie Spector is magnificent doing her Ronettes classic "I Can Hear Music" and stunning with Clarence Clemons in a stellar version of her timeless masterpiece "Be My Baby". Ronnie is sexy and soulful and in peak vocal form for this great and too rare of a performance. Ronnie begins then everyone comes on stage for a rocking and riveting "Da Doo Ron Ron" then the stunning finale led by a brilliant Martha Reeves and "Dancing In The Street" is a true show-stopping finale!!! Bravo to all of the legendary ladies for being in such peak form...not a weak moment in this spectacular concert that hopefully will be released on DVD...this greatness will never happen again. Bravo to all of the Legendary Ladies and everyone else involved with this incredible event!!!

I saw this on HBO when it came out and loved it a lot.Wish that I could have gotten it on DVD is the only drawback.

The 80's were a wonderful decade, in which artists from previous eras of music were embraced, and the sounds of the 50's and 60's were celebrated. For example, Roy Orbison's "Black 'n White Night" comes to mind. If you liked that concert, you'll LOVE this TV special.

Belinda Carlisle (the Go-Go's) and Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) host this 56 minute event that blows the roof off the building! Don't worry, if you're only interested in the classic artists, Belinda and Grace MOSTLY just stay out of the way! Belinda does try a duet with Freda Payne on "Band of Gold" (which Belinda covered, quite successfully on her first solo album), but as a duet, the two are poorly matched. It's still quite fun to watch!

Leslie Gore is simply AMAZING. This version of "you don't own me" is a powerhouse! She steals the show!

Other artists include; Brenda Lee, Shirley Alston Reeves, Martha Reeves, Mary Wells and Ronnie Spector.

Well worth the price, and certainly worthy of a DVD release!
