Jamie graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1989 and spent the next five years working with buoys, daybeacons and LORAN stations in Texas and Alaska. She then graduated to full-time motherhood, and homeschooling her three kids. In all that time, she pursued her passion for research and learning how to do things better. Her latest project is OLLY, the Organized Life and Learning Yearbook, a homeschool record-keeping/planning application for Mac users.
This is probably the best parenting book I have ever read. How you can offer your kids the skills they need to follow their passions and succeed (as they define it) in the world. Although it is geared to homeschoolers, most of this can be applied to children who attend school. She discusses Montessori, Charlotte Mason, A Thomas Jefferson Education (a form of classical education,) and unschooling. She has researched how many highly successful people were educated as they grew up. Although all were homeschooled for some period of time, many also went to school for awhile as well. She discusses people like Thomas Edison, Teddy Roosevelt, Pierre Curie, Agatha Christie, Margaret Leakey, and many, many others. The bottom line is to help your child find their passions and teach them the creativity and skills to attain their goals.
Ironically this book is written with mainly American examples, yet I received the recommendation from someone in New Zealand who found it in their local library.
As an "eclectic" homeschooler that's moving further away from the "school at home" method, I found this book to be very inspiring and validating. It was a helpful reminder to follow my child's lead and my instincts.
This is one of the best books I have read! As both a homeschool & public school parent, this book gives the reader incredible wisdom and insight on what is most needed and useful in helping our children learn and succeed in life! I am not a history buff, but greatly enjoyed the stories and quotes throughout. Some homeschooling books are a bit bazaar and very opinionated but not this one, it is a must read!
