This is probably the best parenting book I have ever read. How you can offer your kids the skills they need to follow their passions and succeed (as they define it) in the world. Although it is geared to homeschoolers, most of this can be applied to children who attend school. She discusses Montessori, Charlotte Mason, A Thomas Jefferson Education (a form of classical education,) and unschooling. She has researched how many highly successful people were educated as they grew up. Although all were homeschooled for some period of time, many also went to school for awhile as well. She discusses people like Thomas Edison, Teddy Roosevelt, Pierre Curie, Agatha Christie, Margaret Leakey, and many, many others. The bottom line is to help your child find their passions and teach them the creativity and skills to attain their goals.

Ironically this book is written with mainly American examples, yet I received the recommendation from someone in New Zealand who found it in their local library.

As an "eclectic" homeschooler that's moving further away from the "school at home" method, I found this book to be very inspiring and validating. It was a helpful reminder to follow my child's lead and my instincts.

This is one of the best books I have read! As both a homeschool & public school parent, this book gives the reader incredible wisdom and insight on what is most needed and useful in helping our children learn and succeed in life! I am not a history buff, but greatly enjoyed the stories and quotes throughout. Some homeschooling books are a bit bazaar and very opinionated but not this one, it is a must read!

I loved this book! Such a great perspective to come from for homeschooling looking at those who have done it before us. I wish I would have read this book the first year we started. I have already recommended this book to others considering taking the plunge. Such a worthwhile read.

This is an amazing book, filled with wonderful insights from an array of innovative thinkers, self-directed learners, and intuitive creators. As a homeschooling mother myself, it has been quite some time since I have had the time to read a complete book - cover to cover. But this book was an absolute joy and affirmation to read, with many delightful inspirations from people throughout history who rose above the limitations and educational paradigms of their time . . . to soar onward, inward, and upward . . . in order to bring through their talents, gifts, wisdom, and light . . . which ultimately shed a new light on how we can live better and brighter in the world today. It was amazing for me to read in greater depth about these incredible people who listened and honored their passions, curiosities, and interests . . . and stepped beyond any perceived cultural limitations or educational norms . . . by following their hearts and doing what they loved . . . to enhance the world and uplift humanity in their own ways. Jamie McMillin writes the book that I have wanted to read for some time! I recommend this book to any parent, and yet particularly to homeschooling parents, seeking to hear the stories of other homeschooled children, who rose within and above . . . not just to fly, but to soar!
