Great Price-Great Tracks!,

This review is from: Legendary Sun Records Story (Audio CD)
Hard to beat 60 great early rock 'n roll tracks for less than $20 dollars. Now, if you have Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnnny Cash's Greatest Hits (from Sun or others), you will be getting duplicates on about 20 tracks but that doesn't diminish the value much here from $20 - if you own the big Sun box set, there's nothing new here so you can skip these CD's.There is no Elvis but come on, you should have a couple Elvis collections (after all, you only have about 200 CD's to choose from :-) ... plus there are some other Elvisish or flat-out Elvis impressions to choose from on these CD's. The rest of the tracks from one-shot wonders to early rock 'n roll pioneers are all nice excellent tracks. There are a small handful of country & r&b blues tracks - all nice. There aren't many tracks from Sun's female artists but the few on here are all excellent. This is a great price to fill in your collection.

First the good news: This set is well recorded, that is, the digital remastering makes the tunes sound quite warm and "tubey" like the original Rockabilly vacuum tube recordings. Full of energy, Enjoyable for what's there. Then the bad news, there are a number of the most famous Sun recording which are missing from the set, which contains a lot of the lesser recordings and the versions not included on the final release. I have a "The Sun Story" from "Rhino". Missing from this recording is Warren Smith's classic "Ubangi Stomp", the songs that started Elvis' career "Its' All Right Mama", & "Good Rocking Tonight" , Roy Orbison's "Devil Doll" & "Ooby Dooby", Bill Riley's "Red hot", Carl Perkins "Honey Don't" that inspired the Beatles, Johnny Cash' "Fulsom Prison Blues", etc. Don't think of this as the complete compendium of Sun Records, and think of it as a well-recorded adjunct to that much more essential CD by Rhino. |
