Product Description

Platform: Xbox 360

All the creatures of myth, legend and lore are real-they've just been sealed away for thousands of years inside Pandora's Box. When a thief named Deckard is hired to steal an ancient artifact, he unwittingly triggers a war between man and myth. Giant Gryphons rule the skies, Werewolves tear the innocent limb from limb and cities are held under siege as creatures we'd dismissed as the imaginings of our ancestors prove to be very real and very angry at being prisoners for untold milennia. As the only person able to seal the box, Deckard finds that he must work with a shadowy secret society to save civilization before it's torn apart by tooth and claw.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a change., November 10, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
I believe this game would be much more noticed and get a lot more attention had it not been released so close to the big games. It doesn't really compete well with titles like: Fable 2, Fallout 3, and Gears 2. With that said, there still is fun to be found with this game. It's a little different than most of the first-person shooters out today. Your powers in your hand are different and nice for a change. Also, the enemies are original, your not fighting nazis or japanese for once. It however isn't perfect, but is still worth playing. I would recommend Fallout 3 and Gears 2 over it anytime, but it is still worth a rent or even a purchase if you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Overall 7.5-8.0

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Open This Box, November 26, 2008
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
There are some things you just don't want open; that questionable Christmas gift from your grandparents; that box of two week old spaghetti in your refrigerator; or that mystery letter from the Experian credit bureau. Well Legendary is no exception. You play the role of Charles Deckard, a high class thief offering your services to the highest bidder. Hired by a secret and powerful organization to steal the legendary Pandora's Box from a Museum in New York City, things quickly go sour as you mistakenly open the box, and unleash various mythical beasts to wreck havoc in our world. In the process Charles himself gains certain powers and quickly learns that the people, who hired him now want him dead. So much for being home within the hour.

Visually, Legendary is pretty impressive. Powered by the Unreal engine the creature designs are gorgeous and the animations are fluid. There's nothing more satisfying then watching a werewolf scale a ventricle wall or witness a flying gryphon pick up a parked police car and drop it on an unsuspecting victim. But that unfortunately is where all the fun ends.

Unfortunately Charles controls like a hyper drunk unable to perform some of the most basic motor skills. The button configuration feels awkward and changing weapons is a real chore. With four werewolves closing in on you, you really don't have time to stop moving, slide your thumb down to the d-pad, only, to then bring up a small selection screen to choose a different weapon. You'll find yourself better off just using whatever you already have equipped, no matter how useless it may be.

The gameplay throughout Legendary is so liner that it kills the feeling of the massive level designs. Even though you're outside on the busy streets of New York City, players will feel like they are walking down a four foot wide hallway unable to go anywhere they may like to explore. This is because Charles is unable to climb over simple objects that would be trivial for other modern shooters like cars, or small ledges. He can't so much as jump over a coke can either if one's in his way. Makes you wonder how this guy ever became a career criminal. He couldn't so much as rob a liquor store, let alone catch the attention of a secret organization. What players are left to do then is walk aimlessly around looking for a conveniently placed ramp to move to higher ground. Never knew a fallen door could be so important.

Mission objectives are mind numbing dull in this title. Players find themselves constantly hunting for a magic water valve or electric lock to hot wire, all the while hunting for the blue icon on screen that leads to the next check point. Creatures seem to have unlimited spawns around these areas too so while players are already frustrated looking for a mystic switch, they can also feel good knowing that cheap death is always near by.

The games physics are a major disappointment. Though the creatures might be stunning looking, there is no sign of interaction between them and the player. Hit detection is nowhere to be found in Legendary. Players can unload clips of ammo on their attackers but they never react to it in an appropriate way. Instead players will almost always take damage as it is impossible to keep foes at bay. Tactics boil down to just shooting frantically until a foe drops. The AI is unbalanced and questionable at times as well. Human enemies seem to have flawless accuracy while the creature's AI seems to only be accurate during in-game cinematics. In fact, it seems that the developers were so impressed with the in-game cinematics, players will be forced to watch them until something clears a path for them to move on once the eye candy is finished.

The sound effects and music in Legendary is the only other saving grace in the game. The voice acting is energetic, the gunshots sound accurate, and the creature sounds will send chills down people's spines. Legendary has a great rock soundtrack that really tries to get the player pumped and ready for action. Unfortunately there are just too many other issues keeping the experience down.

Multiplayer is no saving grace either but gets an A for effort. Players can execute bland team death matches all the while having random werewolves attack both sides. This could be fun but, it is difficult to tell who is on ones team throughout all the madness, thus, most will just run around shooting anything that moves, hoping the targets aren't on their team. There are also some programming problems easily noticed right away. When using automatic weapons, the rumble features in the controller don't work well with what's going on screen. One second your feeling short burst only to later be firing full auto feeling nothing from the controller at all.

In the end, Legendary was a unique title that showed a lot of promise, but instead ended up feeling extremely rushed and unpolished. With so many other shooters out there doing a much better job, this is one box players will be better off leaving unopened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the hate?, January 22, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
This game is amazing, non stop thrills, loads of insane kills, coolest monsters that come from out of nowhere, great graphically detailed maps, great sound, cool weapons, and an interesting story, what more do you want! To anyone looking at this game and making their decision based on reviews: I was doing the same thing and when I gave in a bought this gem I was so happy I did, try it for yourself!
