I believe this game would be much more noticed and get a lot more attention had it not been released so close to the big games. It doesn't really compete well with titles like: Fable 2, Fallout 3, and Gears 2. With that said, there still is fun to be found with this game. It's a little different than most of the first-person shooters out today. Your powers in your hand are different and nice for a change. Also, the enemies are original, your not fighting nazis or japanese for once. It however isn't perfect, but is still worth playing. I would recommend Fallout 3 and Gears 2 over it anytime, but it is still worth a rent or even a purchase if you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Overall 7.5-8.0

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Open This Box, November 26, 2008
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
There are some things you just don't want open; that questionable Christmas gift from your grandparents; that box of two week old spaghetti in your refrigerator; or that mystery letter from the Experian credit bureau. Well Legendary is no exception. You play the role of Charles Deckard, a high class thief offering your services to the highest bidder. Hired by a secret and powerful organization to steal the legendary Pandora's Box from a Museum in New York City, things quickly go sour as you mistakenly open the box, and unleash various mythical beasts to wreck havoc in our world. In the process Charles himself gains certain powers and quickly learns that the people, who hired him now want him dead. So much for being home within the hour.

Visually, Legendary is pretty impressive. Powered by the Unreal engine the creature designs are gorgeous and the animations are fluid. There's nothing more satisfying then watching a werewolf scale a ventricle wall or witness a flying gryphon pick up a parked police car and drop it on an unsuspecting victim. But that unfortunately is where all the fun ends.

Unfortunately Charles controls like a hyper drunk unable to perform some of the most basic motor skills. The button configuration feels awkward and changing weapons is a real chore. With four werewolves closing in on you, you really don't have time to stop moving, slide your thumb down to the d-pad, only, to then bring up a small selection screen to choose a different weapon. You'll find yourself better off just using whatever you already have equipped, no matter how useless it may be.

The gameplay throughout Legendary is so liner that it kills the feeling of the massive level designs. Even though you're outside on the busy streets of New York City, players will feel like they are walking down a four foot wide hallway unable to go anywhere they may like to explore. This is because Charles is unable to climb over simple objects that would be trivial for other modern shooters like cars, or small ledges. He can't so much as jump over a coke can either if one's in his way. Makes you wonder how this guy ever became a career criminal. He couldn't so much as rob a liquor store, let alone catch the attention of a secret organization. What players are left to do then is walk aimlessly around looking for a conveniently placed ramp to move to higher ground. Never knew a fallen door could be so important.

Mission objectives are mind numbing dull in this title. Players find themselves constantly hunting for a magic water valve or electric lock to hot wire, all the while hunting for the blue icon on screen that leads to the next check point. Creatures seem to have unlimited spawns around these areas too so while players are already frustrated looking for a mystic switch, they can also feel good knowing that cheap death is always near by.

The games physics are a major disappointment. Though the creatures might be stunning looking, there is no sign of interaction between them and the player. Hit detection is nowhere to be found in Legendary. Players can unload clips of ammo on their attackers but they never react to it in an appropriate way. Instead players will almost always take damage as it is impossible to keep foes at bay. Tactics boil down to just shooting frantically until a foe drops. The AI is unbalanced and questionable at times as well. Human enemies seem to have flawless accuracy while the creature's AI seems to only be accurate during in-game cinematics. In fact, it seems that the developers were so impressed with the in-game cinematics, players will be forced to watch them until something clears a path for them to move on once the eye candy is finished.

The sound effects and music in Legendary is the only other saving grace in the game. The voice acting is energetic, the gunshots sound accurate, and the creature sounds will send chills down people's spines. Legendary has a great rock soundtrack that really tries to get the player pumped and ready for action. Unfortunately there are just too many other issues keeping the experience down.

Multiplayer is no saving grace either but gets an A for effort. Players can execute bland team death matches all the while having random werewolves attack both sides. This could be fun but, it is difficult to tell who is on ones team throughout all the madness, thus, most will just run around shooting anything that moves, hoping the targets aren't on their team. There are also some programming problems easily noticed right away. When using automatic weapons, the rumble features in the controller don't work well with what's going on screen. One second your feeling short burst only to later be firing full auto feeling nothing from the controller at all.

In the end, Legendary was a unique title that showed a lot of promise, but instead ended up feeling extremely rushed and unpolished. With so many other shooters out there doing a much better job, this is one box players will be better off leaving unopened.

This game is amazing, non stop thrills, loads of insane kills, coolest monsters that come from out of nowhere, great graphically detailed maps, great sound, cool weapons, and an interesting story, what more do you want! To anyone looking at this game and making their decision based on reviews: I was doing the same thing and when I gave in a bought this gem I was so happy I did, try it for yourself!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hardly legendary, April 28, 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
Legendary is one of those games that seems like it was created for me. It combines fantasy monsters and lots of guns to create a modern-day first-person shooter that takes on the creatures of Greek myth.

Wait, did I say Greek myth? Where did you get that idea? Oh, probably from the notion that Charles Deckard opens Pandora's Box (which is, you know, Greek) and unleashes: griffons, minotaurs, werewolves, firedrakes, Nari (evil little pixies), Tscuhigomo's Children (spiders that explode), a golem, a kraken, and poltergeists. Minotaurs and griffons make perfect sense. You could make an argument that the myth of Lycaeon places werewolves in Greek mythology. The firedrakes are modeled after the mythical salamander, a myth that harkens all the way back to the Talmud. But the rest? The rest is an excuse to throw monsters at you to blow up.

My delicate historical sensibility aside, Legendary is still a peculiar beast. Deckard's supposedly a jewel thief, but his lock-picking skill consists of standing at electrical panels and waiting for a counter to finish so the door opens. It seems like there was supposed to be a lock-picking mini-game that didn't make it into the finished product.

Deckard also has the ability to absorb energy from every monster he kills. This allows him to heal, shoot a burst of energy at his opponents, and power certain gadgets to defeat bigger monsters like the golem and the kraken. Reminiscent of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, this "kill more to survive" game mechanic is only slightly less forgiving.

Every game has a developer's favorite monster, the one that the designers clearly put a lot of thought into, sometimes to the exclusion of the actual focus of the game. In F.E.A.R. it was the amazingly life-like, intelligent, and vulgar clone soldiers. In Legendary, it's the werewolves. They climb, they throw stuff from afar, they regenerate unless you chop their heads off, and they're hideous-looking. You will learn to hate werewolves with a passion in Legendary.

What's curious about Legendary is that it wants to be a horror game. There are several scenes wherein everyday citizens are torn apart by the supernatural horrors unleashed by Pandora's box, right before your very eyes. Which seems a bit out of place for a game about mythical creatures taking over the world. Given the range of monstrosities foisted on thus in most modern horror games, a man being eaten by an eagle/lion isn't all that scary.

Legendary is pretty linear too. You can only shoot the bad guys you're allowed to shoot (no putting those civilians out of their misery!). You can only go in the designated areas not blocked off by debris, which is everywhere of course. And you can't jump. Period.

The ending has to be the most hilarious, over-the-top, death scene of a villain ever. Assuming you even make it to the end (spoiler alert!), you will have the distinct pleasure of watching the main villain killed in a Rube Goldberg-ian game of monster volleyball, with each monster mangling and then tossing the bad guy off to the next until he it tossed over a ledge...and then bounces on the way down!

This isn't a bad first-person shooter, merely a mediocre one trying to compete with superior action horror titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the negativity out there, February 15, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
Okay....Legendary is not ground breaking and it isn't Game of Year material...however, it IS a fun, fast past, linear FPS that piles on the scripting events (think of Half Life 2 on roids) and keeps things fast and fun. The story is secondary and it is easy to pick apart...but if you are in the mood for a fun, heavily scripted, action game, then you can not go wrong with Legendary, especially at the Amazon price [...]. Don't buy all the negative reviews out there....some gamers just love to bash things because it doesn't fit the mold of what they expect. One side note - the game is fairly short, clocking in for me at about 7 hours on normal difficulty. Of course, you can play episodes again to try for achievements, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Change, October 9, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
In a world of Halo clones and the unending Call of Duty series, it's nice to see a game that does something different. Legendary offers a new take on old mythology and, interestingly, applies a little bit of science to the creatures described in such old tales. While it may not redefine the first person shooter genre, it gives it a twist. Bascially, an art thief is hired by a mysterious individual and is tricked into opening Pandora's Box, unleashing all manner of beasts on the world. You play as that art thief as he is swept up in a war dating back thousands of years.

Simply put, this game is fun and unique. I never thought I'd play a game where I'd be pumping bullets from a light machine gun into a snarling werewolf, or blasting griffins out of the sky with a missile launcher... Or actually trying to get a giant golem to step on me. It can be a bit frustrating at times, what with the occassional swarm of monsters assaulting you, but what's a game without a little challenge now and then? The health mechanic isn't the "wait and recharge" kind that is oh-so-common these days (even Deus Ex is doing it now). Instead, you gather energy from fallen monsters and various little clouds around the levels and then use it to regenerate. The ending was, sadly, a bit of a let-down for me, though they may have intended a sequel (it certainly felt like it). The overall gameplay, though, more than makes up for it, and I was immediately wanting to beat it a second time.

The graphics are on par for the day, and the scenery looks great. So do the creatures, for that matter, from griffins to ghosts to mighty tentacled monstrosities. This isn't a game where everything looks huge, thick, and strangely shiny, like so many games nowadays. The sound effects are very good as well, and add a lot to the game. The music, while simple, has a grungy and modern edge to it, and creates a heavy atmosphere for the action.

The default control layout does feel a little odd, but there are many other layouts to choose from, so I wouldn't count that as much of an issue. There are some clipping issues, and a few odd little glitches here and there, but nothing major I've discovered. Some people might take issue with the lack of diversity in its locations, being set in mostly New York City and a bit in London, but it fits with the plot and isn't really detrimental to the gameplay. It can also be a little repetitious and somewhat confusing regarding the puzzles. It's also a very linear game, and does feel a little constrictive sometimes. If you don't mind that, however, you can enjoy the events around you as you make the journey. The human NPC AI is a bit on the stupid side, but the creature AI is much better defined (because let's face it, they're the main attraction at this show).

Overall, this is a good game, though often overlooked. It's at least worth a try. If you don't want to rent it, simply download and play the demo. If you don't like it, ignore it. If you can get past the handful of problems, you might just find a fun and engaging game with a unique story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Try it yourself, June 7, 2011

I have read a lot about how bad this game is since its release back in 2008 and never bought it, but now a few years later and thanks to the "used and new" feature on amazon, I found it with a price of 3 dollars and decided to give it a try... You know what? it's woth it, it's not the best game you'll play, it's not even a game that you're gonna keep in your collection after playing it but it's not the awful game that I read about everywhere. So If you feel like wanting to play some game different and have a good time try it for yourself cause I did and for 3 bucks or even 10 this game is not that bad, in fact I enjoy it a lot.

IGN was way too harsh on this game. The game was really fun throughout actually! Yes, it was very repetitive and the replay value is second to none, but I was not DISGUSTED by it. I generally enjoyed it gameplay. Now that it's so cheap, I recommend playing it anyway!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, horrible gameplay, October 11, 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Legendary (Video Game)
The concept of the game is interesting, open pandora's box and all sorts of creatures escape.
However, the gameplay is really horrible. The game suffers from major bugs. Most notable of which, I think, is the collision detection. You have enemies that get stuck in walls or floor; it's quite frustrating to take down an alpha werewolf, and have it get stuck in the wall and you can't decapitate it, you have to wait until it regenerates and fight it again, away from walls.
Overall, it's fun at first, but then becomes very annoying. And there's nobody on multiplayer.
