4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but..., November 20, 2000

Good but lacks a little something. A little something called grit. It's there in 4-5 of the tracks, but the rest don't cut it. Best tracks are 'Butterfinger', 'Attica', 'Changes' and 'Purdie Good'. Some cool electric piano playing on these, and there are about 2 more tunes that you can like, the rest are cheesy fillers. Get Rusty Bryant's or Johnny Hammond's 'Legends...', they're much more satisfying, and come back for this later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought it would be..., August 19, 2005

although i like just about everything prestige put out in the early 70s, i figured the "this is acid jazz" title was just a marketing ploy to get some hip young kids to buy it, and that it was probably compiled with two of perdie's less than remarkable lps. i was right and i was wrong, but the bottom line is that i'm happy i picked it up. it's not really what i would consider acid jazz (i'm the first to admit you can't really classify the generic term though), but it sure sounds like the predecessor to the sound. it's instrumental beat n' funk jazz and blues with lots of electric keyboards and bass, distorted wah-wah guitar, jb horns-style trumpet and sax, and a groove that is thick throughout. perdie's drumming is tight, but he rarely solos - instead he lets his band take over those duties (but they really don't take over the spotlight). note: it is compiled from two of perdie's albums from 1971 - perdie good & shaft.
