5.0 out of 5 stars Rusty Bryant - A Fire Breathing CD!, July 23, 2007
This review is from: Legends of Acid Jazz, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
The CD is made up from the 2 albums: "FireEater" and "Wildfire" from the supervision of Bob Porter.
"FireEater" is like no other album, it is powerful and tough, but still down-home and comfortable. Rusty Bryant had a complex tone and today still sounds modern. He has a arsenal of heavy blues licks, and on "FireEater" he pours it on with emotion, but never over-plays or shows-off. This type of playing is harder than it might appear. His range does not go as high as Lenny Pickett's (SNL), but he starts his solo on "the Hooker" with a high G on the tenor (concert F), which is one the harder notes to hit. I have never heard a tenor saxophonist hit it so solidly. After over 30 years, I still love this recording - I remember my Dad telling me to stop listening to this recording and do my homework.
The "Wildfire" recording has a different feel than "FireEater". I used to skip over "It's Impossible", but now I really enjoy Bryant's other side - a very skilled, lyrical, and quick alto player.

One of my favorite sidemen on this CD is Wilbur Longmire, check out "Free At Last" Leon Spencer and Idris Muhammad also continue their superb contributions to the Prestige 100xx series. Lastly you can also see a small shot of my favorite album cover on "FireEater" by Dolphus Smith Jr.
