Spectacular! Bob Catley has no equals., July 2, 2000
This review is from: Legends (Audio CD)
Bob Catley has released yet another masterpiece! His soaring vocal style suits Gary Hughes' songwriting to a tee. The albums highlights include: Tender Is The Night (About the death of Marilyn Monroe), A Beautiful Night For Love (based on Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights) and Shelter From The Night (about Dracula). These are story songs of the highest quality. I have always loved this type of song, and these are truly at the top of my list of favorites! This album is a must for any fans of Magnum! If you loved albums like "On A Storyteller's Night" You will love this! When I got this album it went into constant play. It is truly awesome!

A stunning album, August 14, 2000
This review is from: Legends (Audio CD)
Having been a fan of Magnum's for over ten years, I was apprehensive as to how Bob would manage without his right-hand-man from Magnum, guitarist and songwriter Tony Clarkin.
I need not have worried - some of the tracks on this album IMHO are even better than anything Magnum ever recorded. Highlights are A beautiful night for love, Shelter from the night, and Where the Heart is.
Pure brilliance.

Lighter melodic rock from Bob Catley and Gary Hughes, August 4, 2006
This review is from: Legends (Audio CD)
Released in 1999, Legends is the second solo album from Magnum vocalist Bob Catley. Once again, the songs on this album were written for Catley by none other than Ten singer/songwriter Gary Hughes. Ten guitarist Vinny Burns also contributes to Legends.
There are some terrific songs on Legends, but overall the album isn't quite as strong as Catley's excellent 1998 debut
The Tower or his 2001 concept album
Middle Earth. The Tower had a somewhat heavier touch, while Legends seems a bit more relaxed and ballad-heavy. Gary Hughes's songwriting is solid as always, and works quite well with Catley's unique vocal style. Catley sounds terrific as usual, and his fey voice continues to make me suspect he's not from this world at all.
Legends is probably the weakest of the three Bob Catley/Gary Hughes collaborations, but even a "weak" Catley/Hughes effort is still going to be better than most other melodic rock artists' best work. I'd absolutely recommend it to fans of Magnum, Ten and high quality melodic rock in general, but I'd suggest picking up The Tower before taking on Legends.
