Another excellent nostalgia concert.,

This review is from: Legends of Country: Classic Hits of 50s, 60s and 70s (DVD)
This is another addition to the excellent My Music concert series seen on PBS. Unfortunately due to the fact that many of real country music's pioneers are no longer with this, many of the performers on the show may not be recognizable to the devotees of the current Nashville pop music masquerading as country music, but it is a stellar lineup of some of country music's legends. One performances (Patti Page) is taken from a previous concert, but all the rest of these performances were original to this concert. There were some archival performances (Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, etc) shown during the PBS broadcast of this show, but they are not on this DVD. For all that, however, it is an excellent show and I would highly recommend it.
Performances: Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page Southern Nights, Rhinestone Cowboy, Wichita Lineman, and Galveston - Glen Campbell Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On and Please Help Me I'm Falling - Hank Locklin The Old Lamplighter and The Three Bells - The Browns Still - Bill Anderson Gone - Ferlin Husky Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal Gayle I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and Hooked on a Feeling - B.J. Thomas I Can Help - Billy Swan Let Your Love Flow - Bellamy Brothers

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.
I hope there's a Volume II.

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.
Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

I had seen a PBS broadcast using this set as a reward for a membership drive. The show highlighted these songs using the original videos and I was engrossed in memories. So I ordered this set and was pleasantly surprised that 'SHOUT' records had done a supurb job of compiling and remastering these songs. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a country music compilation that covers so much in just 3 discs.

I probably didn't read the info properly but I didn't realise they would all be so old. Still can't believe 9/10 still had terrific voices for their age. Wasn't what I expected but still recommend.

We saw this special on PBS and I was so happy to see that we didn't miss out purchasing the DVD! (I thought you could only get it via donation!) This special was something we stumbled upon, but enjoyed immensely. From one performer to the next, we were saying "Oh my goodness, I remember him/her/them!!" :) It's a nostalgic trip with some of the greatest country performers and retrospectives of the ones who have passed on. It's a great family special. The whole reason I wanted the DVD was to share it with my Mom and Father-in-law! It will be enjoyed by the whole family, for sure!
