5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable introduction to the world of Irish music.
"Legends of Ireland" is not just another Celtic conveyor belt compilation but an accurate distillation of the continuing evolotion of Irish folk music. The collection coevrs 3 decades of music featuring three very important eras the folk boom era of the late 1960's the emergence of important artists like Planxty, The Bothy Band, De Dannan, Christy Moore etc...

1.0 out of 5 stars The bands may be legends but the songs on this CD are nightmarish
I have to admit, I'm really only familiar with a few bands on this compilation, like the Clancy Brothers and the Pogues, but I have to think that better songs could have been chosen to represent the respective artists on this album. This is an awful compilation, full of dull and unmemorable selections that would most likely repel anyone investigating Irish music for the...

"Legends of Ireland" is not just another Celtic conveyor belt compilation but an accurate distillation of the continuing evolotion of Irish folk music. The collection coevrs 3 decades of music featuring three very important eras the folk boom era of the late 1960's the emergence of important artists like Planxty, The Bothy Band, De Dannan, Christy Moore etc and the new developments which make Irish music what it is now. Another worthwhile element is that besides featuring the well known artists lesser known bands like Mellow Candle and the influential figure of Sean O'Riada are not fogotten either. In short "Legends of Ireland" is historical ,enjoyable and excellent listening. It is an invaulable introduction to the world of Irish music

Great album, ignore the ignorant negative review. These are great cuts by great artists. If you aren't really familiar with Planxty, Andy Irvine and Paul Brady, The Bothy Band, Sean O'Riada, Clannad, Altan, well, you aren't familiar with Irish music. And certainly not in a position to make an objective evaluation. You're only in a position to tell us what you don't like. And frankly, who gives a rat's backside what you personally don't like? Mechanically played dogs of tracks? OK, they aren't a drunken, strung-out Shane McGowan screaming lyrics incomprehensibly with a punk beat behind him. I like the Pogues (sometimes), but that isn't Irish music. If you dislike this album, Irish music is just not your thing. It's you, not the album.

I have to admit, I'm really only familiar with a few bands on this compilation, like the Clancy Brothers and the Pogues, but I have to think that better songs could have been chosen to represent the respective artists on this album. This is an awful compilation, full of dull and unmemorable selections that would most likely repel anyone investigating Irish music for the first time. I hated every track on this album. Even the traditional songs I love (Rocky Road to Dublin, Raggle Taggle Gypsy) were performed with such mechanical blandness that I found no charm in even them. This is a dog of an album. Avoid.
