This is no book of Westernised fairy tales - this is a sprawling collection of self-contained tiny legends pertaining to people, places and things. Most of them are just a couple of pages long, and a good many are not so much stories as remarks, but the whole thing is endlessly engrossing. Anyone interested in mythology or in Japan should own this. I've never read another book that does what this one does so elegantly and comprehensively.
