Editorial Reviews

This record is the much anticipated follow-up to the Long Island, New York rapper's critically acclaimed 2004 album: Die, Rugged Man, Die. It features Tech N9ne, Talib Kweli, Brother Ali, Hopsin, and Vinnie Paz (of Jedi Mind Tricks). RA the Rugged Man will be an opening act for the Mobb Deep Reunion Tour in May.

It's finally here. Legends Never Die is finally here. It's not everyday we get to hear new material from R.A. the Rugged Man. It's been 9 years since his last full length album "Die, Rugged Man, Die" was released, and 4 years since his label put out a compilation album. R.A. tends to stays out of the spotlight, and for good reason. R.A. is truly a rugged man. He doesn't give a **** about today's world of Hip Hop, and his embarrassment and disgust is expressed periodically throughout his new release. The long-awaited sophomore album from the deservingly self proclaimed legend is dope. There is no doubt that R.A. the Rugged Man can rap his ass off. Some may dislike his music, but there is no denying his ability to obliterate the mic. Legends Never Die only further solidifies his position as one of the all time greats and the last of a dying breed in Hip Hop. From start to finish, Legends Never Die never leaves you bored. In the past critics have pointed out poor production, lazy rhymes and too much filler as deep flaws in R.A.'s work, Legends Never Die shows none of this. This release only brings the best of Rugged Man and his ability to kick any style he wants to the table. Who else can have Hopsin and Tech N9ne on the same album as Masta Ace, Talib Kweli and Vinnie Paz? It's quite remarkable what R.A. shows that he can do with this release. Let's take a deeper look at Legends Never Die track by track:

1. Still Diggin' Wit' Buck [prod. Buckwild]:

R.A. opens Legends Never Die with one of the best beats I've heard in a while. Buckwild's production on this joint reminds me of the Harlem Renaissance. While R.A.'s rhymes on this one are fairly simple, they're also to the point. I'm a legend. This is real Hip Hop.

R.A. has hit a home run with this album. Its refreshing to hear an artist, while sticking to their roots, put out a piece of work that can take you back to what real hip hop is and yet still be inviting to the new generation of music lovers.

This is one of the best albums of 2013. The lyricism cannot be touched by 98% of really good mc's and the beats are on point. If you're into hard-core hip hop, you need this album. 10/10

Ever since I've heard of R.A. he's been a major influence in my hip hop listening because he constantly reminds me that he's spitting what he's actually living. It also makes me proud to know good hip hop does come out of Long Island, R.A. sets a good example for the mature audience. This new album is no different than his previous two in that you can sense his honesty beneath his witticism and funky G. Rap inspired flow. I play the song "Still Get Through the Day" all the time on my walk home and it's special to me because I feel I can relate to the message of the song: we all encounter suffering but lets make it through anyway by holding hands/helping each other. I've already marked ten of the 18 songs with five out of five stars and the others are very good too. I'm glad R.A. dropped this album and I look forward to his future releases.

I was so excited for this album to be released, judging by tracks R.A. has rhymed on recently and the crew he flows with I knew to expect nothing but the best and I was not disappointed. You'll be best served listening to this album with a good pair of headphones from start to finish without interruption to fully experience the highs and lows of R.A.'s emotional journey. Been awhile since an album was a start to finish work of art and not just a few good songs with filler tracks in-between. Pretty solid beats for bumping loud with the windows down too ;)

This is the best album of 2013, the lyrics are raw and the features don't hurt the album at all. R.A. The Rugged Man delivers a true hip-hop album definitely stands out from other rap albums being released now "you other rappers I'm going to obliterate". The album is dedicated to his father that passed away and he has a few songs dedicated to him but that does not take away how great this album is. If you want a true hip-hop album that is recent than this is definitely one that should be bought.

Nine years after his debut album Die, Rugged Man, Die, R.A. The Rugged Man has returned with his sophomore effort, Legends Never Die. I have yet to hear his debut so I went into this based off of what I've heard from his guest appearances. Because I didn't know how he was as a songwriter I found myself pleasantly surprised at how good this album really is. Now nothing that's found on here is groundbreaking or mind-blowing, but there's something about R.A.'s confidence on the mic that makes him a joy to listen to.

Majority of the album is R.A. talking about Hip Hop, the mainstream, the media, and R.A. just spitting rhymes. However, there's the occasional song that breaks away from what could be considered the norm on here. Track four, "Learn Truth", has R.A. and Talib Kweli talking about the corrupt world we live in today. Track ten, "Legends Never Die (Daddy's Halo)", has R.A. talking about his deceased father. And track seventeen, "Still Get Through The Day", has R.A. discussing the hardships that anyone can encounter in life.

These heartfelt moments are what help keep this album grounded. The main attraction, of course, is R.A.'s witty wordplay and comedic lyrics, but after listening to this album it's clear that even someone like R.A. understands that it's not all fun and games. These brief moments of humanity make it easier to appreciate these songs because the album isn't filled with them. He wants you to have fun while listening to this, but he always want you to understand that life is serious too.

As I said, the main attraction is R.A.'s wordplay and lyricism and I meant it. From start to finish this man does not let up for the entire 57 minutes. His flow never stops and he's constantly stringing rhymes together in ways that made my jaw drop on occasion.
