Book Description

Legends of Pro Wrestling offers the first comprehensive look at the entire world of wrestling. With detailed biographies and neverbefore- seen statistics of some of the greatest athletes in the sport, you will be able to read about hundreds of wrestlers, dating back to the mid-1800s. As the first of its kind, this centralized reference allows wrestling enthusiasts a range of information at their fingertips and stands alone as the “ultimate wrestling resource.”

This book offers readers a link between what happened a century ago to what is currently happening today. A fan of Bruno Sammartino or “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers can enjoy this book as much as someone who follows John Cena or The Undertaker today. This collection is a never-ending source of facts, figures, and other entertaining data.

Professional wrestling is a world of accomplishment and legacy. Through injuries, sickness, and family tribulations, many wrestlers have given everything there is to give in the ring and true fans of the sport love every second of it. No matter your age, if you’re a fan of professional wrestling, Legends of Pro Wrestling is the book for you to own and cherish.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Legends of Pro Wrestling is a most comprehensive study and right up to date. I love the format. We all have our favorites and this format allows me to zero in on the earliest time periods and my favorite wrestlers. Some of the magnificent photographs I've never seen before and I've seen a lot. Your book was impossible to put down all afternoon long.” (John Rauer, Wrestling Historian )

“The recently published book, Legends of Pro Wrestling is an interesting and useful guide to cataloging and memorializing the wrestlers who made professional wrestling so entertaining for so many people for so many decades. Besides providing readers with a photo and brief biography, Tim Hornbaker has allowed the seriously interested fan or historian the information that can set them off on a search for further data. For example, knowing a wrestler's high school, college or hometown can permit an endless development of knowledge. Thanks for a fun and practical book!” (Bob Bryla, Screening Committee, Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Amsterdam, NY )

“I got my copy of Legends of Pro Wrestling: 150 Years of Headlocks, Body Slams, and Piledrivers today in the mail and spent two hours reading just parts of it. It lists just about every major wrestler in history and gives a short Bio written by a true historian. Fun book and will be valued as a research tool by many.” (Steve Yohe, Wrestling Historian )

Legends is definitely something anyone who wanted a deeper knowledge of the past should have, and it works well as a quick reference piece when looking for information on a particular person or era…there are not many people who can summarize a period quite the way [Hornbaker] can.” (Rich Tate, GeorgiaWrestlingHistory.com )

“Mr. Hornbaker must be commended for his meticulous research…This must be added to your collection if you are a fan of the legends; and if not, still get it so you can learn about the stars who paved the way for today’s WWE superstars.” (Alan Wojcik, Host of Kayfabe Wrestling Radio )

“…this is ultimately a very stripped-down, unbiased, and non-promotional look at the major players of the past two centuries.” (Dave Hillhouse, SLAM! Wrestling )

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy read for Wrestling Fans May 24, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is good for the old fan who just want to read some fun facts about some of yesterday's stars, and a few of today's stars. As for new fans, it is good if you have a lot of other wrestling sources that you can cross-reference. Most of the other reviewers sum up my thoughts on the job done by Mr T Hornbaker. ..p.s. i love the inclusion of the Japan wrestling stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book at a Great Price August 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Wrestling history is a fascinating subject. I've always been interested in the great pioneers of the sport like Frank Gotch, Joe Stecher, and Ed "Strangler" Lewis, but this book takes it a step further, talking about the guys that predated them, going back to the mid-to-late 1800s. Basically what you get when you buy this book is an overview of every major professional wrestler from the 1800s to present day. Not only that, but you get quick reference facts, their important dates, information about their accomplishments, and a picture of EVERY WRESTLER from McLaughlin in the 1800s to James Storm and C.M. Punk. So you can see what they look like and get a visual impression of the legends who really made pro wrestling the success that it is.

This is much more detailed than any wrestling book I've ever seen and probably pro wrestling's first ever, complete encyclopedia. A lot of this stuff isn't found elsewhere. It is highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings September 29, 2013
By viewer
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was nice to see so many professional wrestlers being profiled in one book. But it was disappointing that so many entries were way too brief. Some entries would start out with some detailed info about the wrestler's early years and abruptly skip about 10 or 20 years ahead and mention the wrestler has lately wrestled in a certain organization, and that's the end of the entry. It was very surprising to read how short Jimmy Snuka's entry was, considering he writes the forward to this book. You learn nothing about Snuka at all in this book. There are errors in this book too. Marc Mero and Barry Horowitz are listed as sons of Boris Malenko. Malenko's sons are actually Joe and Dean Malenko. Bad News Allen's real name is listed as Larry Shreve (which happens to be Abdullah The Butcher's real name). Allen's real name is actually Allen Coage. The formatting for the statistics of each wrestler makes it hard to read as each line goes past the margins of the page. The only way to read these statistics is to change the font to a very small size or change the directions of the text.

This book does have some interesting tidbits about some of the wrestlers. It's just a shame there were so many errors and there wasn't more information written about the careers of some of these legends.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best wrestling encyclopedia thus far January 26, 2013
By Kevin
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An unbiased lists of wrestling entertainers stretching from all over the world small and large wrestling promotions. This book is an exceptional reference point to settle any dispute between fans. My only problem is that they never listed promotions that the entertainer has worked for.
